  1. I'm targeting specific spots, so animals running by doesn't apply. Trigger speed is top notch on the coverts and depending on situation it would not get an animal "running" by. An animal running by at 90 degrees that isn't at the far reach of the cam for better field of view probably wouldn't be in the frame anyway and would be blurry.

  2. Patrick, camera field of view doesn't change. Your taping the sensor only. I use regular electrical tape on all 4 sides and then use my havalon to cut the excess around the edges so it will lay down nice and clean. I'm trying to create a laser beam type motion sensor rather than a wide angle motion sensor.

  3. Right now I have been leaving the middle open. When I called covert to tell them I was very unhappy with the sensitivity with their E-5 cams, they recommended using the electrical tape. I protested the idea and swapped up to MP6 cams at a minimal charge, they also turned out to be too sensitive even though you can adjust those as you cannot with the E5 model (very basic cam which I do not like or recommend). I found a few E5s in the field and they had electrical tape on them, probably made the same call to covert as I did!! After giving in and experimenting with the electrical tape, I have had excellent results and I like the fact I can completely close out the side few of the camera sensor. Wind pictures have been cut way down to almost none at all.

Like I said in earlier posts, I spend a lot more time on set up than almost anyone I've ever been out with. I currently have over 10 cameras out and with all the effort, gas and time involved, I don't have the time or patience for wind pictures so it is worth it to me to take all the time necessary for set up so I can leave it out for a long time with confidence. I always have a way to view cards during set up and I will experiment with each camera, I use the max setting which is about 5 seconds delay I think. I can test it out, view the pics and repeat until I'm totally satisfied with the set up. I normally leave my cameras set on 1 picture with a 60 delay and that is my go to setting. Lots of guys set their cameras to take a lot more pictures than me, utilizing 3 shot burst with a shorter delay. But with so many cameras out, I don't need thousands and thousands of extra pictures of does and small bucks to go through.

MP6 is great camera and I believe it is super reliable with fast trigger speed at a great price. Get the sensitivity in check and it is a great cam.

Covert Red 40 is my current favorite, 32 gig card and a 12AA battery set up, super simple control panel and I'll bet it would take pictures for a year without being touched for the back country fanatics. We set a new camera up in a spot I've been looking at on the map for some time. Plan is to return in February so we will have the velvet season and the rut on camera. Hoping to have good returns on that investment for a new area for 2015.

  4. I wasn't thrilled about trying the electrical tape, but I always go way overboard for cam set up anyway trying to make sure it's perfect. So far the electrical tape has proved to be very effective to cut out wind pics. I place the tape and then trace cut the edges w my havalon so it looks clean and can be rubbed flat so it will last a long time. It is what it is......

  5. I have to disagree on the day vs night. I was a little taken back by your comment Devin about having the high/low backwards because I too have been using low and still had been getting falsies. You'll clearly notice (at least I have) pictures are wind pictures. I scroll through pics pretty quickly and can see a lot of movement in the trees or grass when I get them. I do quite a bit of weeding, but lately I have also been putting electrical tape over the sensor and you can almost cover the entire sensor and still the cam works just fine. I am usually targeting a specific spot IE spring, water trough, salt pit and I do not need to pick up "the surroundings" Most of my wind pics occur mid day and afternoons, and with these crazy winds we've being having I assumed it was just that. The assassins and covert 8 did not have a problem really, where the MP6 and E5 are super sensitive. I have recently bought quite a few red 40s, but I put electrical tape on them right away since it is my new standard method and they work just fine mostly covered. You can literally leave a 1/4 to a 3/8" square of sensor uncovered and it works just fine over a salt pit and cuts out A LOT of crummy wind pics. Nothing worse than hiking to a back country cam after months and finding a full card of wind pics.

I'm interested to see more opinions on settings and night vs day. I definitely am not getting falsies at night, but I overlooked that based on windy days.

  6. I've run BFG ATs for almost twenty yrs. I normally get about 40,000 miles a set. The tire size I run along with the TPMS sensors on my new truck, I was for forced to go with a new tire or downsize the BFGs. I went with the Toyo Open Country w a 50,000 mile warranty. They have good reviews and seem to be well liked by people I've talked to.

One of my favorite things about my BFGs is it seemed like no screw or nail on the planet could cause a flat, only a very slow leak. Being in construction I had more than my fair share of punctures. My only complaint would be the BFGs "chunk out" quite easily while 4 wheeling on rocky roads.

  7. Keep it simple stupid (kiss)

    No online club

You can forfeit your tag w no money back and get your bonus points returned (for any reason!)

Next in line gets option for tag and would have to purchase it at regular price.

Most tags that would get forfeited would be premium tags IMO because they would be concerned about their BPs and not money back. Those tags could EASILY be resold and someone would be estatic to take it I'm sure. Could you imagine getting a phone call late in the game over a premium tag, lots of people would make arrangements and scoop it up. As far as draw results early, that is clearly bogus. What they mean to say is we the people would be forced to wait longer than people who pay. I highly doubt they can pump anything "out early". That's a joke anyway!

  8. I logged on and did a last minute deer app for a buddy who was stuck at work about an hour ago. Went right through and printed a receipt for him. I thought to myself, self "I can't believe they got it right this year!" Then I pop in over here and see this thread.......!!!!!!

EPIC FAIL AGAIN? That is disgraceful they can't get it right

  9. I'm a sucker for white trash, but Sweets is a close second! I'm sure you guys have had plenty of cams out and have studied the pics closely, but is there any chance 2009 was his best year? 2010 puts him quite a bit smaller and 2011 you didn't recognize him as a regressed buck? I was watching a giant that just flat out disappeared..... I/we have over 10 hrs over watching him through binos and spotters on four different occasions and he simply vanished. Late April 3013 was the last time I laid eyes on him. Hoping he might reappear, but not likely after all the time spent in and all around his zone.

  10. Lots of things in my favor in my situation, but I can see the potential for problems in this heat. The bear expired immediately within view of the blind. We tried to take pics quickly and then I immediately started cutting. Since I shot him in the evening, it was cooling off nicely and we laid meat on a rock in the shade as we pieced him out. I did the gutless method which I thought worked great and kept the mess down. The pack out took about an hour and a half. I brought two big ice chests to camp with us. Grabbed those and hauled butt into town. Mc D's saved the day, we made it there just before close and purchased 10 bags of ice to chill the meat. We got back to camp after 12 and slept in the next day to celebrate a job well done. I would be very nervous to shoot one in the morning as far in as we were. We might have had a different outcome with just my son and I racing the clock with temps rising instead of falling. Hoping your taking pics with your bear as I write this!

  11. Kidso,

Bear was a boar, he came in right about 6pm. I really haven't decided what do yet as far as possibly getting him mounted. When I capped him out, I was a little disappointed in how many spots seemed really thin on hair density. He looked amazing when I was preparing for the shot, but there were a lot of thinned out spots and bad spots which I assumed were from rubbing on trees.

Still, I'm definitely pumped and couldn't be happier. Thank you to the people who offered up advice and to lend a hand, I gained quite a bit of knowledge from this tag and I will build on that in the future.

  12. I was able to fill my first bear tag over the weekend. He's not a big bear, but I couldn't be happier with him. My son Dillon was in the blind with me and got to see me take the shot. I got great advice and help from several people, met new friends and got to hang out with some new friends and old. I hung 4 cameras on water sources, but the bear activity was slim to none as the temps weren't where they neeed to be yet for good bear action on water (for me anyway). I brought all the meat home and cleaned it really good. My wife Colleen took it from there and processed into several cuts, put some through the grinder and also made chorizo. We're real happy with the bear meat and I'll be chasing bears again soon I hope. I definitely got lucky and it just boiled down to getting out there. I like to tell my sons, "you can't kill em from the couch"

I hit em with a 2.3" two blade rage and he made it about 15 yards and expired immediately.

Good luck to the guys still hoping to send an arrow through one, I certainly hope the forest stays open long enough for you guys to fill those tags!
