    Coues Buck Contest

I like the idea of a good story, however I would limit the length to reflect a typical magazine article with pictures of course. With the increase, and hopefully a continued increase of available prizes, I would also leave the categories we already have. There is an advantage in my opinion to those who hunt in Mexcio and taking a larger animal than here in the states. I realize there are big deer here in Az and in NM but more opportunity to see a big deer down south of the border. Even though I prized in this event, I will plan on donating more this year than I did last year, and hopefully the 200 or so members who sign up for the contest this year have a generous heart to donate a 5 or 10 dollar bill to the cause. If any is left over after the fact, I suggest we use it for a get together, or donate it to some worthy childrens charity.

salt and feed no more in 2009

One good thing..... Man is extremely resourceful, and all of us use some type of method whether it's mechanical, a so called substance (bait), knowledge of animal habitat, or our legs to get into inaccessible honey holes. I am pretty sure we will always figure out legal ways that will enhance our opportunity to harvest game, thats our nature. I should say for most . Someone in the G&F defenitely has a bug somewhere in or near their posterior on this issue. This had to start somewhere, and if they are basing this on "public perception" Which seems like its becoming the norm for sheeple in this country, then it is wrong. If they can "CLEARLY" demonstrate a "significant" imbalance in harvest rate on this issue, which doesn't seem to be the case at this juncture, then I might be for a change, doubt it, but might. Things like this seem to have a snowball affect, and our fine public perception people will not stop here. The old saying goes "crap rolls down hill" Hunters & Hunting are at the bottom on this one. If you took a hundred random people and asked them to describe "Unethical" scenarios, you would be surprised at the myriad of results you would get back. The only thing we can do when we really believe in something is to voice our fight to the G&F leadership, and then let God do the rest.

ATV's, Quads, Four Wheelers, & shedhunting

Also agree... Had a list of things to say, but too many on the subject. My main problem on this issue is that the sheer laziness in human beings disgusts me. Bad leg and all I will still hoof my way to the top of a hill, or where ever no roads exist. It's sad to see places in the middle of nowhere that you had to hike to in order to get to a glassing spot, where now there is a two tracker on it. You could spend your time confronting idiots like that until you are blue in the face, and they just don't get it. You end up in a "HEATED" discussion time and time again. Now because of this, roads are already being closed down because of too much road usage from all vehicles. It's simple, there will always be people who continue to take the wrong road for the right reasons without an ounce of thought about the impact on all of our resources, land & animals alike. People like us are taking the brunt of it in many ways. The world is changing and always will, you either grow up living within it, or living on it. Laws won't change peoples internal thoughts thats for sure. Wish it were different......

    30-378 wby mag

I own a 30-378 topped with a nightforce scope. I had many issues and time consuming pains to come up with a load that my rifle liked to shoot (both powder & bullet). Once that was accomplished I am able to get the speed I like and a group of about 2 1/2 inches at 700 yards. I love that rifle and the muzzle brake is exceptional in terms of reducing any kick. To me it feels like I am shooting a .243. I learned by stupidity, you never want to shoot it without ear protection unless you have no need of your sense of hearing. In most all cases I am unable to re-use the cases due to the pressures from my loads. The rifle is absolutely amazing when shooting long distances with its speed & accuracy. That rifle requires a solid rest, and is not the type of rifle you can just pop up to your shoulder and snap an accurate shot off. Its extremely heavy and can really weigh you down if you have to hike into an area a few miles. Again the muzzle brake is very effective, and I wouldn't shoot without it unless I had to. the blast out of the brake will pulverize a thick phone book due to the extreme pressures coming out of it. As was already mentioned, either by purchasing over the counter or loading your own, the cost is almost twice as high as a standard caliber. Fo me, I will live with it until I burn out the barrel and it will be tough to find something that shoots as well as it does. The weight of it is my biggest issue.
  13. 10K is not even close to what that deer is worth. I would seek a buyer from Cabela's or one of the other big outfits.
  14. Holy Mackeral !!!! that is one cool buck, thanks for showing the pictures
  15. I harvested this buck last Friday evening in Mexico. The whole experience was awesome as many of you know. The surrounding country was something to behold, extremely rugged and deep where you think getting to the next hill would be easy only to find once you get over the one you’re on, there is a 100 or so foot drop straight down to get to the next one, and every hill thereafter. I went with a good friend of mine who took a really nice 109” deer the week before, so I was already stoked from helping him on that deer. The next 5 days of waiting, all I could think about was getting back down there, nights were not any better. Dreams of seeing all sorts of cool antler configurations danced around in my mind. Dan saw this buck last Weds evening. By the time I got a glimpse of him he was moving over the top of a hill about 900 yards away. It was getting close to dark and we couldn’t put any strategy together on him that night. We noticed how tall he was and that his G2s were only a couple of inches apart from each other at the top. He literally dwarfed the doe he was with and just had one of those really deep stocky bodies. The length from the base to the tip of his antlers was as tall as his chest was deep, which on a good deer is around 15”. I have never seen a deer that looked like this, he is extremely unique, and I knew I wanted to find this deer again… if I could… if anything, just to get a better look at him. We did…. 2 days later Dan picked him up a little over 600 yards out. Just as I got the 15X56’s on the area where the deer was, Dan all of the sudden said… “He’s gone “… I ended up seeing him bust out of the brush chasing after a little buck who was stealing his doe. The big buck had such a hard time getting after them both that he was really losing ground. The old bucks body was huge in comparison to the little buck and could not match the speed or agility of the little guy. Over the hill they went, not to return. We kept glassing and thought maybe his doe would bring him back over. About 45 minutes later we saw the little buck on the next ridge walking away and he was looking pretty dejected. He stopped once and looked back down into the ravine. So we figured the big buck got his doe back and they decided to bed down somewhere near there. I had to get a better angle on the ravine so I hiked up to the top of another mountain which put me within shooting range of anywhere within that ravine. We glassed for several hours and at about 4:30 pm I picked him and the doe up about 460 yards across from me feeding. After the shot was complete and the buck was down, It took me nearly a half hour to get to him with the terrain as it is, but the anticipation is really what gets to you. When we got him back to camp and finished caping him out we looked at his teeth, and this old timer barely had any at all. We estimated him close to 9 years old, he was old. It was his time either way, and I thank God I had an opportunity to get a chance at him. The 3” drop tine gives him additional character on top of his already unique shape. All in all it was a great trip. The owner of the ranch, his son, and all of their friends were “GREAT “ people to be around. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. If you eliminate any of the deductions he gross’s right at 111”.
