Call me crazy (wont be the first time)...... I have NEVER seen a standard (all elk are rutting or all elk are not rutting) status quo. Yes I know daylight phase and temps play a role but I would put my pay check on it that some bigger bulls literally just get the ball rolling. I think some just horn up early (and others late) and then the other bulls in the herd follow suit. In units I have been in you'll see a herd going crazy then in another part of the unit (a long distance away) other herds are doing almost nothing. Anyway...that is just my experience. It just a matter of luck if you run into a herd that has some good activity. I always call the most amount of bulls in during the Fall Turkey hunts the first week of Oct.

awesome. What broadhead did you use?

I have floated Hawley lake and Early lake on the rez. both can produce some monsters. If you go to Hawley work your way up the center of the lake from the dam deep and you'll catch. Early lake- work the shoreline early morning/evening and you catch. Muddler minnow, wolly buggers are always my choice.

Pretty satisfied this year to say the least. We went 3 for 3 in 1 & 1/2 days. We went really high this year and my dad was struggling with the elevation change. I let him sleep in after a rough night. I figured enjoyable memories are more important than filling our tags. Turns out- it worked out for the best. He woke up feeling better and took a 2pt in the first hour at 11am. We dressed, cleaned, butchered ate a late lunch. We then left camp and a couple hours into the afternoon I had filled my tag with my biggest Mulie yet (a 4x4). That night my dad didn't sleep well again so we got out of camp late again to let him sleep. 2 hours later my brother had his 2pt on the ground and in the ice chest. We couldn't feel more blessed not to just have all tagged out so quickly but we did it as a family and we all agree that this hunt was one of our most memorable. Just being with my father and my brother felt nostalgic. The area we were hunting we had not been in for over 10 years and the last time we were my grandfather was there (he passed in June). Before we left we took a homemade ham sandwich (my grandfathers favorite) and left it on a stump in his favorite hunting spot as a way of saying goodbye. Needless to say it was a short hunt we will never forget. I didn't take a lot a pics but I got one during a stalk and 2 of the deer.

its just going to get worse the more people leave their trailers and stuff out for weeks at a time unattended. Happens to trail cams and stands all the time- not going to be any different with more expensive things. It pisses me off too. I honestly think it wasn't as bad before because people were leaving empty tents and cheap plastic tables instead of 30k trailers with UTV's & accessories stored in them.

42 you should all put in for that unit if you want to hunt that

Find a water source then find a food source on a map. Once you find some of those then locate the easiest way to get between the two. Then (if possible) find a high point and glass that area and you will find deer. In my experience the deer will bed not far from those as well on the north side of a hill (the darker and more secluded the better).

That is hilarious...I immediately thought of 214! I'd say that and then any road on the far side of 12AW.....those can get crazy nasty before the canyons
-
It's the same thing every year. The past 10-15 are much worse in my opinion now that more people have purchased trailers and UTV's. I think everything from the influx of weekender's during archery season to cooler weather just puts all the animals on high alert. The only "change" I can see is it makes the age class bucks and bulls stay away from the roads more.

That is amazing, Congrats on such a great hunt. That Moose is huge. None of you had moose tags I take it? or could you not even hunt those. Love seeing wolves on the ground!

Dang that thing is huge. You've ruined yourself now. It'll be hard to top that

Elk hunting in Grizzly country, which pistol?
ready2hunt replied to Cell4soul's topic in The Campfire
Taurus makes a relatively cheap .454 called the raging bull. It is a beast of a load and the weight of the pistol take some kick out. I love the ruger red/black hawk .44 mag pistols. cant go wrong. the only .45 I would go with is a Long Colt. Anything else in my opinion is just a sound deterrent. Yes, with a smaller calliber you can still kill one with a well placed shot HOWEVER, if you are like me, a well placed shot would be pure luck with a charging grizz. -
