  1. I will be the first one to admit that often times I am VERY critical of decision that Game and Fish make HOWEVER I would like to take a moment to thank Game and Fish (I am sending a thank you directly to them as well).

My little cousin has been on her jr. hunt for almost a week in 6A and is feeling pretty down. I got on the phone with her mother yesterday and this is a story they told me.

They have been traveling in and out of different areas of the unit trying to connect with a cow. They have had some shots but all missed thus far. While eating lunch yesterday they were approached by a Game and Fish rep. Instead of doing the norm. (checking licenses first etc) this gentleman gave nothing but advice and words of encouragment to my cousin.

Further more he informed them that a group of PETA members have been driving the area and (from what some property owners are telling them) everytime these PETA members see elk/deer they fire guns in an effort to scare off the animals so hunters can not find them. (I personally have never heard of that before....perhaps others here have). The Game and Fish Rep. said that if they are caught violating laws that they will be ticketed as this is dangerous and ruining the jr. for new hunters liker herself.

Thank to Game and Fish Rep. not only being pro-active but for your words of encourgement. My little cuz felt much better after having spoken with you and the impression you gave them was certainly one that they were impressed by.

  2. sorry i thought this website was fellow hunters helping fellow hunters, guess i was mistaken...god bless

Feel free to ask questions. Its negative comments like those above that could give newer members a bad impression of the website. Don't judge it based upon his words.

20C can produce some good animals. I like the northeast section of the unit but as mentioned previously there are some access issues. Depending on the time of year water sources can prove more critical than others. I'd stay east of the of the 89 and north of the hassayampa river if possible but there is a lot of private land right there so be sure you know where you stand.

    Good luck to you!

  3. On the phone with my little cousin all day giving them suggestions on where to go.....I am hoping she connects today. Said she saw 15 mulies (3 nice bucks) and 1 bear yesterday.

Said on their drive back to camp they had to stop on the highway before they hit 5 cow elk crossing the road (it was well past shooting hours).....what a heart break!

  4. It is pretty easy to get turned around in the thick forest. I remember when I was a kid my dad and I got turned around chasing deer. We had no idea we were turned around till we ended up at a bluff over looking a huge canyon. At that moment we knew exactly where we were and it was a long ways from where we were supposed to be. With about 20 minutes left of light we had about several miles to go. We starting yelling help as we walked.

Since we were hours late getting to camp, my mom started driving in to look for us. She came upon a jeep leaving the area as she was going in. She asked them if she had seen a man and a youg boy. They responded by saying no but someone is yelling help back there. This is as they are leaving the area. I don't know about you but I don't care what kind of plans that I have or where I need to be, but if I hear someone yelling help in the woods Im sure in the heck not going to turn my back and go the other way.

You guys did a great job making sure that boy found his way.

Getting turned around is never an enjoyable experience. Glad you and your father made it back. I don't know about you though but even if I was not looking for someone I would still stop and investigate if I heard someone yelling help!? Those guys in your story are idiots for not stopping and helping you both out. Good thing your situation was not more dire.

  5. heres the exact wording from the recommendations- ya better take notice of the last paragraph

Because recent amendments to R12-4-304 allow the take of coyotes and mountain lions at night, when authorized by Commission Order, it is necessary to restrict the use of night vision equipment as it provides an advantage to increase safety, protect the sport of hunting, and ensure fair chase. The rule is amended to prohibit holding wildlife at bay during daylight hours and injuring, confining, or placing a tracking device on wildlife to prevent "canned" and "will call" hunts. The rule is amended to prohibit an individual from placing any substance, device, or object in, on, or near a water source to intentionally restrict wildlife from using the water source to ensure wildlife have adequate access to water sources. The rule is amended to prohibit the use of edible or ingestible substances to attract big game for the purposes of hunting to proactively address concerns that baiting may facilitate the transmission of diseases among wildlife and placing substances in the wild that contain toxic contaminants and may also result in unnatural concentrations of wildlife. The rules is also amended to prohibit the use of dogs to pursue or hold at bay any bear or lion for another hunter unless the hunter is present for the entire pursuit to more closely regulate the pursuit of bears and lions with dogs and increase consistency within Commission rules. A continuing Department concern is the occurrence of "will call" hunts, where an individual hunting with the aid of dogs holds a lion or bear at bay during an open season and calls another hunter who has a tag for the species to make the kill. Because pursuit falls under the definition of take, it is considered a method of take and appropriately included in this rule. This rule amendment is consistent with the rule language contained in R12-4-208 and extends this requirement to all hunters, thus NPRM - 4

increasing consistency among the current set of rules.

In addition, the Commission believes that R12-4-303 exists to prohibit devices and methods that either compromise the spirit of fair chase or adversely impact hunter success rates. The recent increase in the use of baiting has resulted in disproportionally high harvest rates among those using this method of hunting. Consequently, the Commission is offering fewer hunting opportunities, which negatively impacts hunter recruitment and retention.

Actually both paragraphs can raise eyebrows. The first one can legally justify a ticket or citation to hunting in a blind or stand over a waterhole.."The rule is amended to prohibit an individual from placing any substance, DEVICE, or object in, on, or near a water source to intentionally restrict wildlife from using the water source to ensure wildlife have adequate access to water sources" Again, though its just my opinon...no reason to get crazy over it.

  6. Went out with the family yesterday afternoon to help my cousins on their youth hunt, scout for my upcoming hunt and just spend some quality time with the family.

It was an interesting trip having all the kids in the car with my wife and I while scouting but we were able to call in some elk. I tried to help my little cousin seal the deal (she doesn't have a father figure in her life) however they chose to go that evening with a friend of a friend who is a "guide."

Is it just me or is the term "Guide" becoming a very loose term these days haha???? He seemed like a nice guy but I was a bit put off by his arrogant attitude. Sadly to say they did not see a single thing yesterday.

Here are some picture of what we saw on our way out. The pictures aren't very good though. We saw a total of 7 cows and 1 bull and helped a father and son down a cow just before sun down (my wife has now caught the "elk huntin' bug!). The cow in the middle is the one they took....but my wife's camera battery died shortly thereafter so no more pics. It is soooo much fun sharing all this with the wife and kids!!!!

  7. We must be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Haven't heard a peep. Wind and snow were blowing too hard Friday morning to hear anything other than the temperature dropping. Nothing in the evening or this morning either in spots I was into elk every day during archery.

I am no expert but just got back from that area again and Mormon Mt. is not producing the elk movement that I have seen in the past around the mountain itself. They are certainly there and I have heard them bugling but I think all the camping ect have pushed them pretty good already. I had to get off the beaten path a good distance before I was in a bunch and they were rutting pretty good all day.

  8. Yes there is not much up there. Plus its supposed to warm up another 10 degrees again next week. Doubt even a heavy drop would be able to stick around.

I'll be up there again tomorrow....probably just going to be muddy. Hopefully this kicks the bulls into full gear though!

  9. This is what really annoyes me. You look on every news outlet and they say that it was a split or that it did neither good nor bad for either campaign. Further more everyone admits that Biden was an jerk the entire debate........ Then you go to NBC and this is their take (I copied it from MSNBC)

"Biden won the debate, but it was a qualified victory. He energized Democrats who had been down in the dumps since the president’s supine performance, but he also energized Republicans who found him rude and dishonest. Swing voters might have been turned off, too. But it probably doesn’t matter since they’re going to vote for the top of the ticket."

No wonder NBC is tanking as a network....when you have crap like this that is being reported. I hope they tank completly.

  10. Here is the bottom line. A hunter not hunting is not good. I have yet to see the effects of the forest road changes. I bet it will be surprising in 5 years how many numbers we lose in this state. Once you are a certain age and cannot hike you are prety much just able to road hunt (another one guys complain about) or sit a water hole or other. With these road changes there will be a lot of older guys (no offense I will be there too one day) that will say screw it because the roads they used to drive are shut down and they will throw in the towel. I don't know how many but young or old, but if they use salt or bait if this passes they might be gone too. How does that help us. I look at the hunting and fishing community as a whole body, archers, muzzle loaders, rifleman, trappers, houndsmen, guys that spot and stalk, guys that use blinds, guys that use treestands, guys that use salt, guys that use bait, guys that road hunt, guys that just buy all the crap from the catalogs and drive around to look cool. When you think of it this way you take away your left leg from the knee down your a pretty worthless if you have to defend yourself right.

+1 I think this is a good post.

I don't necessarily like all my neighbors in my neigborhood but we all look out for eachother to keep the place safe. I am sending an email to G&F today and appreciate the info shared in previous posts. Like it or not we all share the same forest.
