    Killing small bucks

Being a 16 year old hunter- who is to say that a spike is not a trophy in one a hunter's eye? Who is to say that all the hard work that goes into chasing these grey ghosts is not as climactic when we take a spike as when we get a bigger deer? I will be hunting this week for the opener. My 4th year with a coues tag. I've never gotten a shot at one due to a series of unfortunate hunts. Yes, those hunts were still fun- but not as satisfying as a successful one. I can honestly say that right now I would not care if I shot a spike or a 100" 3x3. Either way, a tremendous amount of hard work would have been put into taking that deer. I'll tell you this- first buck that I get within 400 yards of that has antler, is going to die. And if I do get a deer, whateer it may be, I will be extremely happy. A spike would be as much of a godsend as a trophy for me. At lest for me, antler restictions would just make things more complicated. Let the sleeping dogs lie- and let us decide what we think is a trophy.
  5. Last year that nasty system and horrible winds that one night were terrible. This year I have high hopes- it sure beats the heck out of the previous couple years where it has been 10 degrees above average at 90+ and the deer have been lethargic in the day time, feeding often at night. Hoping to get my first coues- GO 32!

    Guestimate the Score!

What a great buck! A true trophy. His tines are not super-long, but good mass and nice eye guards add to his score. I'd have to agree that 105 ish is a pretty good estimate. What happened with then taxidermiest? His left side is cool with that kicker and palmation!

    7E Peaks

Hey all. Just getting ready for my elk hunt and wondered if anybody at all had any extra advice. I sighted in my Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 the other day with 165 Trophy Bonded Tips. 1" @ 100 yards. Ready to leave on thursday and be in the woods Friday. I'm hunting 7E Peaks hunt unit for cow elk. Starts Friday. Hoping to recover my first elk. I've hunted a lot but this is only my second time going after elk. (I have plenty of time- I'm 16). Wondering if anybody else has some advice or tips. Anybody been up there recently? Are the elk moving down a bit in elevation or are they still at the base of the peaks? I would much appreciate a pm for some last minute info before we go up there. We scouted the area and I have a little watering hole I plan on trying day one. If no dice, then I'll starte hitting some higher/lower areas looking for elk. If anybody has some extra advice or info on locations to find the elk in this unit right now, tactics, etc.... send me a PM. I'd appreciate it.I've got some good places to llok and have been pointed in the direction of some elk, but you can never be too prepared. One last thing- looks like we are going to be using Rhonda's Butcher Shop for processing if we get one down. Anybody have any experience with them? Excellent/good/decent/acceptable/bad? Thanks.

    Question on Field Dressing

Hey all. I just have one question on field dressing. If I get a cow elk down it may be necessary for me to field dress it myself if I don't have any help around. I've been watching several videos and really want to do a good job because if I get an elk I don't want any waste, spoiled meat, etc... Most if it seems pretty simple. One thing I am not certain about is the pelvic bone. Is it really necessary to split the pelvic bone for quartering, or can it be skipped? Also, to clear the anal tract from the animal without opening the pelvice bone, how is that accomplished? I suppose you could ream it with a knife and then pull it out with the other entrails. I have been using this video as a guide. it is the best I have found (for free on the web). Taking out the windpipe with the other organs makes it a lot neater process than some of the others. http://wildlife.state.co.us/NEWSMEDIA/VIDEOS/Pages/FieldDressBigGame.aspx Sorry for the idiotic question, I want to do a good job.

Shout out to Game and Fish

I heard a true story of some PETA member/ animals rights activists that were attempting to scare all the gamw away in an area. They scared two deer right into the path of two hunters who had not been having much luck. Two shots later they yelled out a thank you to the PETA members for helping them get their deer. The response? A scowl and some curses. I don't imagine they were too pleased. I always like that story. The game warden In our hunting area in 32 is always very friendly. He does check us, but he gives us advice on where to go and what to look for to get on the deer that seem to be in differnet spots every year.

    Help with scoring a coues

I will take the GPS coordinates of this spot in return for an arm and a leg of your choosing. (still need on arm for the trigger and one leg to hobble into the back country). Seriously, the smaller one in the first picture is pushing 100" and the bigger one I'd put at 110-115." JMHO Either is a serious trophy in my book. Usually when I see something close with antlers that I have a tag for, it dies.

    7E Advice for a Youth

Hey all. just wanted to introduce myself. My name's Colton and my greatest passions are Hutning and Fly Fishing, the order depending on the time of year. I'm 16 years old. No one in my immediate family pursues theese as passionately as I do, so I handle the draw and what hunts I/we put in for. This year I need a little help. I put a few 7E peaks hunt number for our last choices in case we didnt draw 5BS. The hunts we are after are for meat, not trophies, so we put in for cow. Though I didnt draw my first two choices, thankfully the Mid to late october cow hunt in 7E peaks hunt unit had leftover tages, so we drew a couple since it was ione of our last choices. (I also just found out I drew unit 32 coues for November! WOO HOO!) Anyways, though I have done a lot of research, I was hoping to get some help with this tricky unit. I have some starting points but would appreciate it if anyone who had some advice would drop apost or send a pm. I am looking for general places to find where the elk are that time of year. If you want to share specifi spots, I would be happy to have them in a PM. Anyways, my current game plan is to drive in on a forest road and hike north into the Kachina Peaks wilderness to track and glass for elk. This might change given someone provides me some other advice and.or directions on where to look for them. The hunt is in the third week of october so I am thinking that it will be the tail end of the rut and the cows will be in harems? Anyways, I just thought on the off chance anyone was familiar with this unit/hunt they could provide some adevice on techniques and location to find the cows come october. I'll take a scouting trip up there prior to the hunt, but would appreciate other information. Thanks, Colton.

    ORANGE MONSTER FISH!!!!

That would be a Cyprinus carpio, AKA the common carp. That particular variation is often referred to as a koi and as such can grow to VERY large size. They are often found in urban ponds and I have tried to catch them on a fly rod before, they are very spooky. They exist in waterways throughout the united states. And no I did not just google that, LOL.
