  1. I always find these threads quite humorous when we all have nothing to do in the but check coues every 5 minutes when most of don't have the time or blessing to be out hunting something. Keeps us all entertained until we are able to make it out into gods country. With that being said, Wife and are going out tomorrow to The Phoenix Zoo, dropping her off on the side to see if she can find any good sheds, I am heading to the back to see if I cant get a B&C giraffe that inadvertently jumps the fence to get the pile of apples I have on the other side next to my trail cam. LOL

  2. We will be in 5a for two weeks trying to fill two tags. One tag is a chore due to age and shooting capabilities and the other is a picky guy who wants giant 4ths, wide stance, and great tails. If I find any of the three I may shoot, but I am comfortable waiting for the ONE lololol. Yeah I am the picky guy :)

So in other words you don't want your bull to be hitting the gym. LOL

  3. Wasnt going to chime in but. One if you stick it on water no matter where it is you are just asking for it to be messed with. My wife puts more miles in our unit than most guides and what amazes me the storys she tells me that 90% are not in a box or locked up. Guys for the most part our hunting community is honest. Its the other idiots who you have to worry about. Most guys including my wife and I find tons of cameras and we just walk back around or what ever so we dont show up on their camera. Only for the fact they have spent the time and effort to get it way back in there and they deserve to be respected. My advice is they will get it if they want it. Elkhunter1 works for me and makes some of the most awesome boxes on the planet. Make it so the least they have to do it cut the tree down to get it. Then getting it open is another story. Good luck guys

  4. Well when i was up there yesterday looking for elk the camo army was standing in line at every water hole I could find.

What the HECK is the point of hunting water when there has been that much rain ... man ... sometimes people are REALLY DUMB!!!!! Not referring to you obviously ... the CAMO ARMY.

    +1 it amazes me

  5. I am hoping someone has some input for me regarding fluid pan heads. I have a Slik 330 EZ tripod (that came with a pan head) that I really like (used for 15x binos). Unfortunately it seems the head is starting to get a little jerky or choppy as I pan from side to side (only been through 3 seasons or so). This is not a huge deal but it is starting to bug me a little. I have been doing as much research as I can but am even more confused now. It seems people really like the manfrotto heads and I am particularly interested in hearing about the 128RC and the 701HDV (probably not willing to go above these in price). They both seem to have great reviews. The 128RC is cheaper but would I be giving up something by not getting the 701HDV? Also, my research has shown that neither are "true fluid heads", does this really matter (will they not be jerky like the slik head)? Also, it seems that these heads can only operate in an x and y direction (seems strange as my slik head can go diagonally when panning, or maybe I'm understanding this wrong).

    Couple more questions:

Am I able to put a manfrotto head on slik legs?

Is there a fix for the slik head (thought I read I am never supposed to lubricate it)?

What sub $200 legs would you recommend for one of these manfrotto heads for 15x glasses?

    Thanks for the help

I have the 701hdv and love it

  6. Me and a buddy are heading up early tomorrow morning. Not even sure where we are going to camp or hunt yet. We were leaning towards Unit 4 or 23N. Any suggestions based solely on weather, and better places to camp in light of the weather?

In a boat. I am 25 east of wild woody and rain gauge show 2 inches since 9 pm last night. Supposed to get more over next 7 days. Very muddy too.

  7. This thread sounds pretty" cry me a river"... IMO. The hounds are not any worse than any other recreational intrusion (to many to list) into your day of hunting... We have suffered from many intrusions over the years but as long it isn't an Anti, I really just try my best to get over it any more... I love hounds and Hound hunters... they are a deer hunter's Best friend... you can't love them only when it is convenient to you, IMO.

It's pretty sad that you can't commiserate with people that have spent all spring and summer carrying salt and running cams that are a little frustrated that on opening morning there were hounds running all over the dang mountain. It's public land, and they have a right to be there, but it's pretty dang frustrating. I guess you're lucky enough and have been around long enough to know where they run hounds in this state.... Some of us aren't as fortunate and had opening weekend (and 3 of my 10 vacations days) ruined by people running hounds. I hope in the future you can understand why some people have heart burn with hounds running by thier treestands multiple times during a day...

I understand your points completely... but it is a mute point (is what I mean). $H!T happens out there... it has happened to me and likely will so again. It isn't that I knew where "not" to be, but we didn't happen to see a single dog or other hunter. My point is that threads like these create more divisions between hunters... and give "them" more leverage against us... I heard the same gripe in the Taxidermist shop over the weekend too from a good friend and I told him the same basic thing. I am sorry that your hunt was a bust, but you chose one thing to be mad about instead of lots of things to be happy about... hunting is not just about the kill. I have the outdoors and God's country at my finger tips every day so I tend to take it for granted... but for those of you that only have 10 days or so a year you should let your Blood Pressure fall and just enjoy the minutes you can be out there, because you can sit in your car on the freeway during the morning commute and grumble. Good Hunting. ;)

You're very correct that I shouldn't let it get to me like I do. Thanks for putting it in perspective. I just found out my boss canceled my vacation days for my early archery elk hunt so I'm probably a little frustrated over that too. Hope I didn't come off like too much of a prick. :)

Quit your job. I am always hiring. Need about 40 guys. And I will even give you days off for your elk hunt :)

I know I am totally going to regret responding to it but here we go. I really understand both sides if the argument if you call it that. I totally agree with with coues, on the fact we are blessed to be able to spend days or weeks out in god country hunting him animals. Some get to do it some way more than others. And "hunters" with dogs will always be there. No way to change that and I know you are just venting. And on the other hand I feel for aka. I really do. Our family does the same thing. Only difference is we spend about 250 days a year in our unit hiking or scouting and hunting. My greatest advice is go the extra 5 miles or so. If there is a road within two miles of where you are you are too close. AKA pm me if you need to help this is our backyard. Hope I didn't stir the pot to bad.

  9. Nope not what you think!

As I got to my parking spot I almost hit a doe AND a person. As I was climbing the hill I looked back and saw 8 guys carrying burlap packs and one guy brushing the tracks off the road, he was also providing "over watch" for the others. It looked like he had an AK. He looked back and saw me calling Border Patrol, after that they picked up the pace. As BP and Omaha came on scene I was able to guide them in on my last sighting of the group by talking to one of the K-nine units. Before it was all said and done there was a dozen trucks and two Helos providing support. Patrol Agent Jeramey called when they were done to thank me for my help and to advise me they got half of the guys, all of the dope, radios, cell phones, maps and other Intel. He also estimated the weight at 350lbs. Those bozos trekked right through the canyon I was going to hunt. they ruined my hunt so I returned the favor by ruining their day and giving them some jewelry to ware. Getting the news did brighten what was a very frustrating day!

I would to the same thing again in a heartbeat!!!!

Sorry no pics! I was concentrating on getting Omaha in on the group.

No steven you are not getting any more days off to go hunting. LOL. Good stories over the last few days
