I don't know if there is anything better then watching kids be successful on a hunt.

After three hard days of hunting my daughter was able to take her first big game animal. She made a great shot at 194 yards. After over coming some mishaps that we made she was ready to head back out on Friday and she sealed the deal at 7:30am. We took my nephew out Saturday morning since he was not able to come on Friday. This was also his first big game animal and after we thought we missed our chance he got a shot and took this pig at 256 yards. My son isn't old enough to hunt but he never missed an opportunity to be out with us. He deserves the success just as much as the hunters

It's been a good gun for me, it has sat in the safe for a long time however it's been resurrected for the little ones beginning to hunt. I look forward to putting it to good use over the next couple years. That's if we ever get drawn.

Here's the grouping we got out of 54.4 grains of IMR 4350 with a Barnes 120 TTSX. If things ever play out I would like to see about these other loads that were suggested.

I've spent the last 6-7 years entrenched in fly fishing so I'm sure my wife is going to love that I'm getting into reloading. I'm lucky she lets me do this kind of stuff, I will just need to find a way to support it. I'm sure it's like tying flys you don't do it to save money but to get exactly what you want or because its something you can't buy.

PRDATR - Yes that most likely was me. You probably don't get many in with this caliber. You guys were great!

In my search the two powders that stuck out to me were the H4350 and RL17. I'm able to get the H4350 where the other powders I haven't been able to find. I debated on which size bullet to go with so decided to go with a lighter bullet for speed and distance. I also decided to try this because of what they say the Barnes bullet does with keeping its mass. This gun will only be used for deer and small game. We have the same model in a 308 and a H&H 300 for larger game. I would love to hear your reasoning on your suggestions as I am just learning about this thing called reloading!

Right now I'm going to try H4350 with a Barnes TTSX 120 grain bullet and see how it plays out.

Biglakejake this was my fathers gun and the gun I've used to shoot all my deer so I want to keep it in the family. It has been some time since I have shot it and now that I have kids able to hunt I'm getting it back up and running. After looking more into expanding the next on the 6.5x285 it doesn't look to hard. I will use this as my last resort. As of now I should have enough to get me started. Thanks for all the info and help.

I will have to look into the 6.5x284 option. The 284 never really took off but it is a great shooting gun. The 6.5x284 seems to be a good choice for competitive shooters. I was going to buy a 7mm-08 but the 284 is almost an identical gun. Looks like I'm gonna have to keep my eye on the web for some brass. I think I read somewhere they have stopped manufacturing ammo for this caliber. The gun is a lever action but not the pre 64 model. Thanks for the info.

Does it have the LBA trigger system?

A huge thanks to Houston Davis and Dan Crookston for all the help they offered on this hunt. My dad picked up his elk from Clay a couple weeks ago and we were able to get him on the wall for Father's Day. The only place we could hang him was above the stairs and he was as hard to hang as he was to bring down on the hunt.

You' re contradicting yourself a little here. First off I see that you are now living with your father so this might be why your willing to pay $500 for an elk tag. Secondly ask a poor man that likes to hunt if he can afford or would be willing to pay $500 for a tag. Your theory about less people putting in because the tags are more is out the door because the only thing that would probably cause this is if they have to front the money like we did on the paper app. Lastly it is becoming a rich mans sport in more ways then one but your wealthier individuals would be the ones in the past that put their grandmothers and their neighbor because they could afford to. Everyone is entitled to their opinion so I respect yours. I have up on the G&F when they changed all the hunts several years ago to increase their tags by offering crappy hunts with hundreds of tags.

This is the way it used to be. I took my daughter through the course in February and on the back of the name card this rule you listed was on it. I was worried so I asked the director and he said this was the old guidelines and old cards they were using up. They can take hunter safety and put in for big game hunts when they're 9 as long as they are 10 by the time the hunt starts.

Thanks for the kind words! It's great to be able to spend time outdoors with my kids. It puts everything in perspective. My daughter has a turkey hunt coming up so it will be her turn. We fished the lower Gunnison river near pleasure park. The other river was some private water up near rifle Colorado.

But he sure loves to fish. We had a chance to fish in Colorado and even though we fought some bad weather we caught some fish and had a great time.

My daughter has finally reached the age to hunt! She will not be old enough to hunt javelinas so we put her in for turkey. This is all new to me and thought this would be the place to reach out for help/ suggestions. I'm looking to get her a shotgun that she can handle and have a good experience with. All the shotguns we have are old and too big for her and as I have started looking it seems like there are several options out there for youth shotguns. Cost is a consideration however I have two boys that are following in her footsteps so it would get some use. Thanks for any help.
