How early should hunt camp be setup?
Ron G. replied to scoutm's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I voted for two days before, although this year I'll technically be there 3 days before (Tues night). I'd think the earlier the better in order to get in some preseason scouting and get camp setup and organized. Obviously, vacation time, family, and work commitments all play into how early to get to camp. 'Camp' is a relative term also. I'm heading up Tuesday afternoon/evening for my deer hunt and my camp is at my parent's place. I can't wait to get up there and get out hunting! This is actually earlier than normal for me compared to past years. I have a bit more vacation to play with this year. Ron -

Good Pack Needed ASAP!!!
Ron G. replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I have the J104 and really like it. Haven't had the chance to pack out an animal with it, but have carried it quite a bit since I got it almost a year ago. I've weighted it down a couple of times to see how it feels, and no complaints so far. I'd recommend it. -

Saw that yesterday. When I first saw the picture, I was sure it'd been shot down in Mexico. Was shocked to read that it was in AZ. Maybe with all the summer rains there could be another of that caliber???

Great stories everyone. First gun I used and I guess given (seeing as it still sits in my safe) was a single shot bolt action 22. It's taken a lot of squirrels and rabbits. I don't remember the make of it. I'll have to look. My first deer rifle was a Remington Model 788 in .308 I got back in 1982, when I turned 10. That's been my main deer rifle ever since. Bought a Remington 700 ADL in 7mm Mag from a buddy this past summer, so might give that a go this year in the more open country. In the timber I'll still be carrying my 788. Someday I'll maybe buy a fancy new rifle with a new scope, but for now, the .308 still does what I ask of it. Ron

Helped a buddy out who has a 5BN tag last weekend. He passed on a small 4x5 standing broadside at 23 yards opening morning and then didn't get into any bulls again until Sunday am. Bull didn't cooperate and went the wrong way around a bush. Heading back up tonight to see if we can close the deal. Have heard glunking a couple of times. Last time was last year on my archery elk hunt from a 7x7 on the other side of his cows from me... Very cool!

Bass, Glad you guys were able to make it back to camp ok on Friday. That'd be a frustrating experience. Seems to me that things are in a lull regarding the rut. I was out scouting on the 17th for a buddy's 5BN bull hunt and they bulls were screaming and chasing small bulls away and getting on cows. Watched the elk down in mormon lake and saw much of the same. Bulls were mounting cows and keeping busy chasing other bulls away. Didn't see as much of that on Thurs when I was up there checking out the lake herd. Fri am we were into elk and they were bugling and the smaller bulls were responding well to calls, but they shut up around 9. Sat didn't hear much either, not sure if it was the wind or we just weren't in the right spot. Got into them again on Sunday but couldn't make it happen. Bull went the wrong way around a tree and never presented a shot. Should be up there again helping my friend out next weekend. Hoping the rut kicks in more as well...

Great, just when I thought I had everything, now I find out I need to upgrade... Looks like a good system. I actually went back to a neck strap from my CH bino system this past weekend because I had to keep the straps so tight so it didn't bounce around, and then I found myself not using the binos because there was so much tension when I brought them up to my eyes with one hand...

Congratulations on your buck! Great story too. -
The spot I'm currently focusing on for deer is about 3+ hours from my house, and 45 mins from my parents.
