KUIU Ultralight Hunting / Vias Camo

Have them and really like them! Very stretchy and I second what Jamaro said, fit is good. I want to pick up a pair in solid color (wish I did before they sold out) and am on their waiting list for when they get the next batch in. Here I am this past weekend glassing while archery deer hunting and sporting KUIU... Ron

    Thermacell

When I first got mine I couldn't get it to start at higher altitudes (>5,000 ft). Worked great at home, but not at higher altitudes. Have found that by shaking it for 30-60 seconds before pressing the start button gets it to fire up. Have been using mine while sitting and glassing while scouting for my elk hunt and deer hunting last weekend. Worked great on skeeters and flies. Ron

    hunting unit 5a&5b

Not trying to frustrate you, but if you look at the odds in the regs, the odds are better at drawing the tag than filling the tag... Now, to encourage you, there are some nice bucks in there if you can find them. Just not a lot of deer... Below are a couple of whitetail racks that belong to my dad. The first is a buck that died by running into a fence. (G&F returned the rack to my dad.) 2nd Picture is a buck my dad shot in I think 1996... I'm not going to comment on the mule deer... I'll be up helping my dad since he has that same tag... Good luck on your hunt!

    New Pack(s)

Not that anyone cares (except me), but I recently got a new pack system. I ordered a Mystery Ranch NICE frame and crew cab bag back in January. After doing more research and investigation, I added a Longbow bag to my order, with the intent of trying them both and keeping the one I liked best. Needless to say, since then I've easily talked myself into keeping both bags. These pics aren't the best (taken with my cell), I'll eventually take better ones with a real camera, but here are some pics of my new pack(s)... First the Longbow: Here is a picture of the Longbow opened up... Here are some pictures of the Crew Cab: I've had the crewcab for a couple of weeks and just got the longbow bag yesterday. It takes only a couple of minutes to swap out bags on the NICE frame. So far, I'm very impressed with fit, comfort, construction, and the (potential) durability of the packs. I'll be doing reviews of the packs after I get some time in both... Ron

    Topo Maps

I noticed the same thing about Wide World of Maps when I went in there the other day and was asking about getting topo maps on waterproof paper. They didn't sound too interested and the unit maps they had that they showed me on waterproof paper were 1:100000 scale. I have the National Geographic program which is nice, but I've gotten tired of printing out 8.5x11" maps, and even 11x17" maps don't do it for me... The National Geographic maps are digital images of the USGS 7.5 minute quads which is nice for advanced scouting or even downloading your waypoints and tracks to see where you were after hunting or scouting trips. The National Geographic maps are not installable on Garmin GPS's (at least the models I'm familiar with). For GPS and computer maps I have used the SW Topo and AZ Topo from gpsfiledepot.com with good success. These are installed on the gps via Garmin Mapsource. You can't really beat those maps for free. I recently purchased gps maps from HuntingGPSMaps.com. These are also installed via Garmin Mapsource and even though I've only been using them for a couple of months, I'm really liking them. Lots of detail (land ownership marked, hunt unit boundaries, wilderness boundaries, forest road labels, and more) and fast redraw on my Garmin 60CSX. You can buy a chip or the downloadable version. It is $130 for the downloadable version and $99 for micro sd card. For paper maps, I just ordered a couple of maps from mytopo.com. Decent prices, and semi-custom maps. I'll have more info on how I like them after I receive them sometime next week. Ron

    New Pack(s)

Yep, when I heard they were producing some packs with optifade, I decided to go ahead and go with one of those. I didn't expect it to take so long, but they were having issues with the fabric supplier. It is worth the wait though and I'm looking forward to using the packs in my summer scouting and fall hunts. I got drawn for early archery bull, my dad got drawn for a limited opportunity any elk hunt, and a couple of friends got drawn for late season bull hunts that I'll be helping out on as well. With the potential of participating on 4 elk hunts this next fall I'll hopefully get some blood on the pack(s). There's a good chance I'll be either helping out on or going on my own deer hunt as well... Looking forward to this fall! Thanks, Ron
  18. At 9 mos she's still very much a pup, going into adolescence. Sounds like she's acting like it too! Shock collars are best for enforcing KNOWN commands. Doesn't sound like she knows 'here' or 'come' very well, so sounds like the shock collar would just reinforce that the kennel isn't where she wants to be. Working her with a check cord and being VERY CONSISTENT sounds like your best bet. Don't allow her the option to disobey. Easier said than done, I know. Use a leash and or check cord everytime. This might mean no more 'free running' but she needs to know how to behave on a leash as well. You might want to feed her in the kennel as well if she is a chow hound. Food was/is always a good motivator for my lab. Good luck! Things will probably get better with time, but she has you trained for now it seems like. ;-) Ron

    Arizona Goulds w/ Bow

Congrats on the bird! Way to get it done with your bow!
  20. I'm selling a used pair of Danner Jackals in size 10. When I bought them I had another pair of Danners in size 10 that fit great. I was in a hurry when I bought them and didn't properly try them on and didn't notice until out in the field that these were too big for me. I've tried them a few more times, but they are too big unless I wear thick socks. I consider these an early season boot, so kinda contradicts wearing a thick sock... They've been worn probably 12-15 times and don't have any tears or anything wrong with them. They still have plenty of life to them! These are great for turkey hunting, archery deer hunting, or archery elk hunting. I'd like $60 for them, and if I have to ship them, the buyer pays shipping. Here are some pictures... You can contact me via pm on the site. Thanks! Ron
