First time out!

Recommended Posts

I am going on my first archery hunt in a couple of weeks, I just had some questions. What would be the some of the mistakes first timers do out there? I have scouted and know about where I want to be, I just don't want to make any mistakes that could have been prevented, also I don't want to be rude to other hunters out there. Any info would be appreciated, Thx

Best of luck to you!

I'd have to say the #1 thing I've learned over the years is "Patience"!!! I still don't have enough of it, but I've learned time and time again that there is a time and a place where your level of patience will be the deciding factor on whether you kill or not!

When you are into a long stalk and you are "almost" close enough for a shot and you're not sure if the buck is still there, the hardest thing to do is to have patience! If at this moment you calm yourself down, reasure yourself the buck should still be there and don't rush it, you'll have a better chance at getting the shot you want on your un-suspecting target. I've always had a strong desire to rush the stalk at that moment and just "make it happen", but everytime I do that I blow it! I've gotten alot better in recent years to slow down in the final stages of a stalk and I'm realizing that is a huge factor in getting that shot you want and being able to think more clear in the moment of truth, just take your time and make yourself slow down! Wow I have learned so much here, thanks everyone. I do have to say myself is that I can be inpatient, I will just go out there at remember not to rush things because I want to enjoy the whole experience of the hunt, both bad and good. :) On a good note my brother said he got the days off and he will be accompanying me. He has never done this either so it will be a great learning experience for both of us. I just want to be able to become effective at this, so I can teach my two little boys one day to enjoy the outdoors. My oldest is 8 and he wanted to go but it would involve too much walking for him. In two years he will have his chance...

That's awesome you'll be sharing the experience with your brother! Sharing the experience with family and friends is what makes it all special! If you ever have any questions or need any advice send me a PM or email, I love helpin' out any way I can. Best of luck to ya! JIM>

Well I went out to my hunt I saw nothing. I sat on top of a mountain and glassed and nothing. So this is what happened my brother and I went back to the truck and camp. It started raining very heavy so we head back to the tent and everything is soaked sleeping bags, etc. So my brother and I went into the Jeep and he said start the car to get some air in here, and it cranked out really really slow. I was like the battery is dying. So I was like oh oh! :o My brother and I went down the road hopefully thinking running the Jeep would charge the battery. Going down the road it was nothing but mud or seemed like quick sand. I was sliding everywhere almost hitting some trees. I head into town to get my battery changed and by the time I got there it was closed. One of my headlights go out and my low tire light goes on as well. Heading back to camp we decide it just wasn't our time. Seemed like Karma told us not this weekend. We throw everything in the Jeep and limp home. What bad luck! I had fun though what a story. Hopefully in December things will be better. :D
