Elk Hunter Magazine Hunting Editor Paul “ElkNut Medel

Recommended Posts

Paul “ElkNut†Medel has studied and hunted elk for nearly 30 years, and bowhunted them with his son for over 20 years.  He began to pay close attention to elk vocalization and attempting to really understand what elk say, and when and where they say it.1-12-claytons-bull.jpg?w=610&h=461

Ultimately, his close attention to this subject inspired him to put together an educational and instructional elk hunting DVD with the primary focus being on elk vocalization.  ElkNut Outdoor Productions began with the release of their first DVD, “Bugling Bulls and Beyond, Vol. 1†in 2003. Following that came “Bugling Bulls and Beyond, Vol. 2â€, “Calling All Cowsâ€, and then the two-hour “Worse Than Wolvesâ€.  Each volume continued to expand the depth of detail given and the information provided about elk vocalization, elk body language and included setups and scenarios where this information would come into play. They also produced two other DVDs – “Scouting Elk Countryâ€, on how to scout out elk areas using a topo map; and then “Mastering the Mouth Reedâ€, showing how to correctly use a mouth reed.

In spring of 2009 came “ElkNut’s Playbookâ€, which is a 100-page, pocket-sized field guide that Paul wrote after multitudes of requests from those who watched his elk vocalization DVDs and wanted to take the printed knowledge into the field. The book provides quick definitions of the various sounds elk use, advice on interpreting elk vocalization, solid hunting methods, and setup strategies.

The most recent addition to Paul’s lineup was produced specifically to go with “ElkNut’s Playbookâ€. It’s called “Sounds by the Elkâ€, which is an audio CD that puts the actual elk sounds together with the definitions given for them in the Playbook.

Paul and his wife have been married for almost 36 years and have four grown children and three grandchildren.
