Dewey asked me to post this for him. I love how Dewey uses no camo and just keeps the wind right and consistently kills coues bucks with his bow. I killed this buck at 22yds with my compound bow. Unit C Cottonwood Canyon. I saw alotta bucks and previously missed 3 times with my homemade longbow and arrows. One buck that I missed with my longbow was a 100-105" buck at 36yds downhill. I got too excited and snapped shot the arrow. I watched the arrow sail low as it stuck harmlessly between its legs into the ground. It was a RUSH. I felt like I had just killed the buck of a lifetime at that moment even though I had missed. I accomplished my goal that day, to spot and stalk a P&Y and release an arrow with homemade equipment. So I decided for the final weekend, I'll take out "Ole Faithful" my compound bow and find a buck. So together with younger bro "Ace-dogg" we set forth and found this high racked 3X3 buck in a secluded side canyon. I stalked up at first to 80yds and waited. Watched this deer zigzag back and forth. Final at 60yds it started moving thru the mahogeny nimbling along as it went. Each time it picked thru the browse I crept closer. Now its about 40yds....waited and watched with my arrow already nocked. The buck now was moving thru a thicket so I took a couple more steps. Finally I spot an opening thru the maghogney settle my pin and waited. The buck was angling towards me when I released the shot. It was a clean pass-thru with the Magnus Stingers BH. I to follow-up with a second shot which put it down for good. Happy trails....dewey

James +1 please do a journal entry for your archery deer hunt.

Thanks for the update Dan!

that's awesome!! Way to go!! that's a tough thing to crawl into a thicket in the dark expecting a potentially wounded pig!! Glad you found her and made it back out safe! Big pig for sure!

That thing looks like a BEAST! Congratulations!

January 2012... You can't kill all year long if you don't start the first day!

Congratulations Gino!! that's just awesome. and like Stan, I like the pack-out pic! -
Great story and congratulations!! Way to get on them fast as the light was fading and nice job finishing him off. Hope you didn't stumble into too many cactus as you were hiking back out in the dark without a flashlight! Since you don't want it to be over yet, maybe you should go down to the 36s and scout out javelina for the women's hunt!! Great way to pursue your passion for a good cause!

There will be a meteor shower in the predawn hrs of Wednesday jan 4. One AZ site said there might be a peak tonight at 7 pm with another peak at 1 am. http://www.space.com/14067-2012-quadrantid-meteor-shower-skywatching.html and info from the Flandrau observatory in AZ. Quadrantid meteor shower has a favorable showing in 2012 with a dual peak at 7PM Jan 3rd and a second peak possible at 1AM Jan 4th. The meteors are often visible for a week either side of the peak so watch for any streaks heading north to south coming out of the constellation Boötes. http://www.flandrau.org/node/112#nse

Wow! Congrats to you and your buddy!

Outstanding!!!
-
Congratulations! How far was the shot? How many in the herd?

+1 Really there are great bucks in most units. And so you might want to narrow it down based on which units are actually close enough to you that you will spend more time scouting and learning the area.

Thank you for this thread. I really do appreciate the many talented members we have that share their expertise. In addition to the excellent ones you mentioned, here are some others I think share their expertise and add significant depth to the forum. 308Nut with his very useful, technical and practical gun and ballistics info. Lazzeroni also did this for awhile but has backed off. JLB has provided us with some great info about calculating shot distance when there is a steep angle involved. He also donated some great items to give away to help forum members in this situation. Deernut (AGFD deer specialist Jim Heffelfinger) shares his depth of knowledge about our beloved deer. In the same vein, Bwakeling (AGFD big game branch chief Brian Wakeling) gets involved in some of the topics about deer management in AZ and provides great information for our members. WildHeritageTaxidermy and swwildlife provide some excellent answers to taxidermy questions. Also cvw789 provides info on cleaning skulls. JavaCowboy provides amazing programming experience that allows me to hold contests more often. Coosefan, Wards Outfitters, Lance and Tines (of TLO), and ExtremeCoues (aka Jeremy Ulmer -- with the help of Coues'n'Sheep) are some of the sponsors here that provide us with LOTS of pics of great animals to drool over. And they often share their amazing expertise to help all hunters improve. Kiliminjaro (aka Scottyboy) dazzles us with hunting adventures on other continents and has helped other members make an African dream hunt a reality. Lucky2hunt and DCS have also shared their amazing exploits with a bow in Africa. Grong and Antlerdog share their unmatched passion for antlers with us! Wildlife Callers and Dogman provide outstanding info on hunting lions. Echo Co, Headhunter, Apache7mm and rabidApache provide us with some great trophies from the San Carlos and White Mtn Reservations. Several people host CW.com gatherings at their homes or at Marshall Lake....Antlerdog (allows people to drool over his awesome antler collection at his house), TJhunt2 (hosted the CW Christmas party), Lance (Marshall Lake gathering hosted for years now). These gatherings help add to the sense of community in this forum. Many other forum members go to great lengths to share their hunting/outdoor adventures through photo essays and stories...a few that do it regularly and with some great photos include: Pixman, Standman, azcouesfanatic, Scott Adams, AZP&Y, Ron G (with the help of amazing photos by jay woods), Gr8 White Jr and Girlygirl Hunter, and I could go on and on...it's just too long a list. Lots of members go out of their way to help others be successful....azpackhorse, willhunt4coues, bonecollector, scott adams, tjhunt2, ernestoC, matthewp45, and so many more. I really love the way this forum provides a community where hunters help other hunters be successful. The more I start listing, the more I realize there are too many people to thank and so I will cut it off here for now. We have so many members that help support this site in many ways such as serving as moderators, helping with contests, being supportive of other peoples hunting stories, and also those who sport a sticker or make a donation to help support the site. The list is huge. Anyway, I really do appreciate the amazing contributions and talents within the members of this forum. THANK YOU!
