Question on filming?
CouesWhitetail replied to GJMauro12's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
One thing that makes a video a good memory is to make sure you film moments on the hunt that are not just when you are out hunting. Film your grandpa talking about his childhood or how he learned to hunt or how they used to hunt when he was younger. Film some of the other wildlife you see and the landscape/sunsets. Film you or your grandpa talking about your favorite gun or truck or whatever you are using out there that has some meaning and history with you. it makes it a more interesting video when you watch it with your family. -

I used my GL2 to film the sheep. They were across a canyon from me. I was maybe 150-200 yrds away and used a doubler on the lens.

Help a great organization that helps kids get outdoors!
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in The Campfire
Arizona Outdoor Adventures is an excellent organization that focuses on getting inner city kids out into nature to enrich their lives and give them an appreciate of the outdoors. They have a camp for the kids in the White Mtns and the Wallow fire went right through and destroyed just about everything they had at this camp. They lost truck campers, tents, sleeping bags, cots, coolers, and just about anything related to camping you can think of. news articles about the camp and the fire: http://www.kpho.com/story/14968451/wallow-fire-swallows-kids-summer-camp http://www.azfamily.com/news/Inside-a-youth-camp-destroyed-by-the-Wallow-fire-124748269.html AZ Outdoor Adventures has been hosting these FREE camps for kids for the last 15 years. Dan Priest had just finished setting the camp up for this year when he was told they had to evacuate. After the fire they came back and realized they lost everything. If you want to help this organization you can do so in several ways. Option 1 The Glendale Cabela's store has generously donated several Alaskan Guide tents and other gear to AOA to begin the replenishment process. They are also offering a discount July 22-24 to anyone interested in purchasing camping gear to donate to Arizona Outdoor Adventures. Representatives from AOA will be at the store from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day to collect these donations. An Arizona Outdoor Adventures wish list is available in store or online at http://www.azoutdooradventures.org/wishlist. Option 2 AOA Fundraiser Casino Night benefiting Arizona Outdoor Adventures August 6, 2011 A great opportunity to support efforts to get children into the great outdoors while having a fun evening with friends! Dinner, raffle, silent auction ---- see all the details: For ticket information: http://www.aoacasino2011.eventbrite.com/ Option 3 AOA has been generously provided with a "Matching Gift Offer" for contributions received from July 10 to July 30, 2011. If you've not contributed before, this would be a wonderful opportunity to double the effectiveness of a generous gift! Go to http://www.azoutdooradventures.org/donations for information on how to donate. CouesWhitetail.com just donated $200 to this organization and that will be matched so it will have the effect of being a $400 donation. I encourage anyone who feels like donating, to do so now during the Matching timeframe of July 10-30. It will make your hard-earned dollars go farther and will help a great group. For more information about Arizona Outdoor Adventures and to make a donation, visit their website: http://www.azoutdooradventures.org/default.asp -
I have seen that before in coues deer up in the catalinas this time of year. I was never sure if it was part of the regular shedding process or an infection with some mites or something that caused them to scratch the hair off. I don't see it very often...

I think those are part of the same herd I filmed awhile back. There is a very white ewe in there and her offspring were pretty pale too. here is a link to the video:

From AGFD website: Rio Grande turkey were recently introduced on the Arizona Strip at Black Rock Mountain. This terrain is similar to where the birds were transplanted from in Utah. The Rio Grande subspecies is very similar to the Merriam’s turkey, and it would take a side-by-side comparison to notice the differences. The Rio is slightly smaller and the banded accent tail-feathers are slightly darker. However, most notably are the primary wing feathers, the Rios are mainly black with small white accent bars, while the Merriams are white with small black accents. This turkey subspecies prefers areas with drainages and stream beds in relatively open brush and scrub country up to 6,000 feet in elevation. http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/game_turkey.shtml

Ok, here is one that I was reminded of the other day because we were back in the exact same spot doing owl surveys recently. Several years ago, my husband and I had just finished conducting a nighttime owl survey and had found a spot to pitch a tent. As my husband is putting up the tent, I am at at the back of the open jeep getting other gear out. We are setting up camp in a small opening in the forest, next to a dirt road at the edge of a canyon that drops off pretty steep. I have the headlights of the jeep on to help light up the camp spot so we can put up the tent. The lights are shining away from the canyon and the road and toward the tent. anyway, I am in the dark at the back of the jeep messing with gear and I suddenly hear this very loud thundering of what sounded like horses, but it wasn't quite right and I couldn't figure it out. I ask my husband if he hears it and without even realizing it, I get very nervous and then I start shouting very loudly something about "whatever it is, it is coming here fast...NOW!" I turn to look across the dirt road in the dark to see two shapes come racing FULL speed up and over the canyon into the road. One skirts right by me and goes under the jeep and toward my husband, the other slams on the breaks and stops a little further out by the road edge. It all happens so fast and it's dark out so I don't really know what the heck is going on. Turns out it was two large bobcats chasing each other. I can't believe how loud their thundering feet sounded as they came up out of the canyon. I would have sworn it was elk or horses. I don't know where the bobcat that went under the jeep ended up, I don't think my husband ever saw it race by. But the other one just looked bewildered and sat down at the edge of the road looking at us, wondering what on earth just happened. My guess is it was a male chasing a female bobcat. It was a crazy episode and one we still talk about.
