Thanks for checking the numbers. It could be people see that a larger buck has already been posted and so they don't share theirs since they don't think they can win. A lower success rate can make a big difference when there are just a handful per category. Plus fewer people are hunting in Mexico due to the violence. Having no pre-registration was intended to make it easier to enter, but it's seems to have had the opposite effect. I thought the prizes offered were very good.

For those of you that have used Wilderness Athlete products, let me know which ones you like so far. -

I am now a dealer for Wilderness Athlete Products, so you can purchase them right here on CouesWhitetail.com. Just added the products to the store today. I have used these on some hard backpack hunts and found it really made a difference in my stamina and recovery time. I particularly like the hydrate and recover mix, the energy and focus mix and the performance bars. Wilderness Athlete Products Page

That's our favorite recipe for game sausage that we use in spaghetti sauce. We make it almost weekly since it's my husbands favorite meal! Only I use twice as much fennel and more oregano than it calls for. I originally got this recipe from your sausage making class at BOW (when I stepped in to help teach it while you were fighting fires)! I usually use 2 lbs game meat and 2 lbs pork shoulder/butt (and skip the fat this recipe calls for).

I think the change in the way we did registration was the main thing. People didn't have to pre-register so then it just seems like fewer people are involved because if they don't kill, they don't contact you. And maybe like elkhunter said, success rates were down. There are several people that usually submit something but they didn't get deer this year, so that leaves them out. what were the actual numbers of people who submitted photos/stories this year compared to last year? was one category down more than usual? Didn't we have more youth entries this year?

Interesting facts on New Mexico score contest
CouesWhitetail replied to SirRoyal's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
I think you are correct. Usually on these contests the guesses average around the correct score. However, this one seemed to be different and I think it's for many of the reasons you listed. It's pretty hard to step out there and guess over 140 given how rare those deer are. and CW4192, I am not sure why you are attacking sirroyal...he is just asking a question. He didn't say it wasn't a great buck or even really question the score...perhaps you misunderstood his post. -
Hey All, Covert will be coming out with a bunch of new models this spring, and so they have discounted the older models, which let's me pass the savings on to you So, if you have been looking at getting a Covert camera, this is a great time. Covert 2s are now $139.99 (regularly $199.99) and they have stopped making them, so when I sell out of these, that's it. Covert HRs are now $219.99 (normally this cam is $249.99) and this model is also not going to be in the new lineup. I only have a few of these left, so if you like this camera, you might want to stock up. All cameras come with FREE shipping. Buy Covert Trail Cameras

You can read about the antler growth cycle in coues on this page of this website: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/coues_biology/life_stages.htm Do a google search for antler growth and you can read tons of articles on the growth process. and I second the recommendation for Jim H's book....deer of the southwest. do a google search for that one too and get a copy. Because the antlers are shed every year, you can't really do a cross section and count annual rings like you can in a tree or a tooth. Of course in a year of good rainfall, the antler growth will be better than in a drought year, but I don't think you can take an antler from one year and determine which prior years had good rainfall/good nutrition. You can do that with an animals tooth to some degree, especially in something like female bears where you can tell the year she had young and the years she didn't.

LOL!! good one! -
He didn't get one with his slingshot. They wouldn't come closer than 40-45 yds and he needed them to be like 25 yrds. So he ended up using his shotgun instead.
