There might be a way to navigate on your nikon to the trail cam folder. I know my canon allows me to create folders (which I never do) to organize images. You might check your manual if you haven't already and see if there is something you can do to view that other folder. Sometimes it's just a default to read the folder it created, but you might be able to change that default or just navigate to the other folder somehow. My Canon seems to create a folder also, but I think it only does this when I actually take photos with the camera. But when I just put the SD card in with trail cam images it just reads those images. I focus not only on putting them in spots where people don't go normally (not on a waterhole that is on a map, not near a road), but also focus on setting them up in odd spots (on the ground, higher in a tree, under a branch, in some boulders, etc). Almost everyone I know puts them 3.5-4 feet up on a tree over water or salt. If someone finds the water or salt all they have to do is look around at that level on all the obvious trees. However, if your camera is not in the "usual" spot, then they will have a much harder time spotting it. Also, if you don't put them on water or salt, it's a lot harder for someone to find your camera. Use a trail some distance away from the water or salt. As has been said the Coverts are nice and small and easier to hide than most cams. Also with the Covert 2 you can use the Tree 60 to put the camera up in a spot people don't normall look, on smaller branches higher or lower in a tree or bush, or on a log on the ground. here is an example of the tree60 being used in an unsusual spot. This camera is in the roots of trees along a creek bed. If someone did walk down there the odds of them looking in the tree roots at just the right time are slim. Most people look down while walking unless they have a reason to start looking around. here are some pics of spots with the Covert 1 set on the ground:

What type of canon do you have? My guess would be your camera doesn't recognize the formating that the Covert uses to format the card? Amanda

I would say generally you can take the SD card out and use it in your camera to view photos. That's what I do for both the Covert 1 and 2. However, RedRabbit just informed me he wasn't able to preview images from his Covert SD card in his high end digital SLR. I don't know if all SLRs are like that or just the one he has. I use the SD card in my little point and shoot digital and it works great for reviewing photos. I have a Canon Powershot. But you can always see more details on the computer at home, so I take an extra SD card and swap them out so I can view the images larger on my computer. Amanda

The PIR sensor is a different and a little wider in the Covert 2. The case design is different (side opening rather than bottom and includes a rubber gasket). Some people like that case design for easier access to the batteries. The Covert 2 also comes with an SD card whereas the Covert 1 doesn't. And then the 2 extra LEDs and threaded hole in the bottom are the other differences of the Covert 2 vs Covert 1. Other than that they are pretty much the same. They both can be set to take 3 megapixel or 5 megapixel images. Both have the same video capabilities and they have the same options for changing sensitivity, video length, number of pics, delays between triggers, etc. Amanda

Hey All, We will be having our next CouesWhitetail.com get-together July 11 at Jim Reynolds' house in Sahuarita. Jim and his wife are graciously hosting us, and I hear that TexasHunter will be making his famous BBQ brisket. Jim lives out in the country and there is room on his land to camp overnight if you would like to stay overnight (either Fri or Sat night). The main party is on Saturday and you can come by anytime during the day. I will post a map when I get it. Jim has an outstanding collection of Coues antlers that is well worth a drive to his house to see them!! Amanda

Annual Southern Utah Camping Trip
CouesWhitetail replied to stanley's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Great trip Stan!! I can't believe I missed this post somehow. Anyway, thanks for the stories and pics. It's nice to go "along" with you on your vacation! Amanda -
You might want to just call first and ask them if they have it. Of course that keeps you from doing any "impulse buys" so that's not so fun!!! Amanda

Party at Jim Reynolds' house!
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Some he finds, some he buys. He has been building that collection for decades. He has shot 9 B&C bucks and several others that are over 100 but not quite B&C. Amanda -
Yes, you are supposed to be able to use a solar panel with these cams. I haven't tried it out, but there is a plug inlet on the bottom of the covert 1 and 2 that is supposed to allow for external power. I think you would get the moultrie solar panel and hook it to an external battery and then run wires from that battery to the plug-in on the cam. Since the AA batteries can last a couple months, I don't know why you would bother. The lithium batteries are supposed to last even longer than the alkalines. I just got a set of lithiums but haven't tested them out. Amanda

My dear husband and I took the dogs for a walk early this morning and enjoyed the sunrise. We also happened to find three young barn owls who live in a mine shaft. That was a neat find. I am thinking of putting a trail cam up on the site to get some video of adults feeding young. Sunrise over Chiricahua Butte.....what a treat! As we went by the mine shaft (we always have to put Julie on a leash around this one since she is very likely to just run around and fall in!), my husband says, maybe we should check and see if any Barn Owls use this mine. About a minute later he says he sees some peeking up at him. I go over and see three young owls on a ledge all peering up at me. Hard to get good photos because it was dark in there, but they were fun to see. They didn't hiss at us but they did fly to the other side of shaft to avoid us. This mine has a very strong wood structure that still covers most of the opening, providing good shade for the owls. And it has little alcoves where they can tuck away also. Looks like a great spot for them. Those that want to learn more about Barn Owls can visit these links: http://www.peregrinefund.org/Explore_Rapto...ls/barnowl.html http://www.owling.com/Barn_nh.htm two young on ledge in this pic (arrows point to them) single owl flying across mine shaft to avoid us single owl on a plank across mine shaft

Looks like a great spot! What camera are you using? Amanda

Just looks like a bad scrape to me. The kind of injury I have seen on road kill deer or bighorn sheep that fell off a cliff. Perhaps she had to escape a lion quickly and rubbed her side hard against something? Amanda

I use both and I like both. Essentially they have the same capabilities with video and photos, although the 2 extra LED lights on the Covert 2 get you a little brighter night pics. Some people just like the looks of the Covert 2 better. If you think you would like to use a tripod or the Tree-60 camera mount to put your cams on, then you have to use the Covert 2 because it has the threaded hole on the bottom and the Covert 1 doesn't. There is a camo version of the Covert 1 available now. I will post a pic when I get one. It will be a little more expensive than the green Covert 1, but you might like the looks of it better. Both the Covert 1 and 2 use the same remote to program them and the same SD card and all that. I like the Covert 1 because I can just set it down on the ground since it has a flat bottom. But I also like the ability of the Covert 2 to thread onto the tree-60. Amanda

No, you don't have to use it everytime. The allen wrench is provided to put the little round part on to make a threaded hole for the adapter to go into. Amanda

My NM Turkey mount
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
At first that is what I thought, but it would have to like a foot long spacer. And then it just takes over the part of the room where it is. My husband thought maybe we could hang it over our bed, but in trying that it just looks odd unless you are looking up at it. Keep the ideas coming. Amanda -
My NM Turkey mount
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Thanks for the suggestion!! That might work. Although I would worry about my dog Julie grabbing it or knocking the pedestal down. Amanda -
They are kinda gargoyle-like, aren't they? You should hear them. The adults have this scream that will make you jump out of your skin. I was sleeping outside on some cots with my husband once and we had one fly onto a cliff by our heads and shriek, I thought a mountain lion was about to jump on our heads by the sound of it!! Wow, that wakes you up in a hurry! Amanda
