How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI
CouesWhitetail replied to Healy Arms's topic in Hunting Fitness
Thanks for the post Mark and sharing about your experience with coming to the realization that you needed to lose weight and actually making that happen! So many of us come to that same conclusion but then fail to do anything about it. Hopefully our Monday check-in or other events will help motivate some people to reach their goals for being leaner. I don't think the main point of Mark's post is to defend the BMI, but instead to point out that as a nation we seem to have changed what we think is overweight or fat. If you go back and look at photos of people from the 1950s you can see that as a whole they are much skinnier than we are as a nation now. I have even noticed that when I look at old wildlife technical reports where they show photos of biologists collecting data or releasing game. They are almost always thin. Anyway, I think Mark makes a good point that as a nation we have gotten fatter and that there is some level of denial about it. -
I doubt it's an AGFD camera since they mostly buy Covert trail cameras from me. But does it really make any difference who it is? It's not like they are asking people to stay out of the area, but just a request not to vandalize the camera. It's just sad that we have to even think about making such a request.

My Oct whitetail tag came in the mail the other day and I immediately put it in my safe. It used to be that for years I would just toss it on the counter somewhere and the day before the hunt I would frantically search the house for the tag! I got tired of doing that, so then I had a special file holder for it on the counter, and that worked out fine because I always knew where it was. But then my dad gave me a neat old safe that used to be in a general store that some distant relatives owned long ago. Anyway, it's a neat safe that stands a few feet tall and now that is where I store my tags when they come in the mail. I would keep them in my hunting pack, but I use that pack year round for my owl surveys and I am afraid it would fall out somewhere! Where do you keep your tags?

Darn Tough Socks Gear Review

I don't wear any type of sock liner, I don't think it's needed, but you can certainly wear one if you like it. -

Winners Chosen for Wildlife Conservation Contest
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
So if anyone is looking for a way to help out on this website, I could really use more help with organizing contests like this. This website has grown so exponentially large over the years, that I find I just can't do it all and so things get delayed or dropped. Luckily (?) with my husbands recent illness and mechanical troubles with my jeep I have had a lot more time in the last 2-3 weeks to devote to the site. That translated into finally getting this contest wrapped up and a new subforum created and more. We could do a lot more contests of this type if I had some folks willing to help me with it. So you can email me if you are interested. -

Neat find! I usually find fossils like that in areas with lots of limestone. I will have to see if I can find some pics of them. I LOVE Fossils! I go to the Tucson Gem and Mineral show every year just to look at the gigantic assortment of fossils they have.

Darn Tough Socks Gear Review
CouesWhitetail replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
here are the ones we like: I have some of the thicker ones also, but I find they are too hot, so I go with the thinner cushion. Perhaps thicker socks would work on the Dec hunt. http://darntough.com/men/mens-hike-trek/coolmax-micro-crew-cushion http://www.rei.com/product/825037/darn-tough-light-hiker-micro-crew-socks-mens (used REI link because they show a lot more color options for this sock than darn tough website) this is one that I think would be good but I haven't tried yet http://darntough.com/men/mens-hunting/scent-lok-micro-crew-cushion -
Where do you store your tag before hunting season?
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in The Campfire
LOL! Yeah, that is a good question....I have a hard time throwing out unused tags, so I have several myself. Plastering a work bench is a neat idea....it would be cool to put used tags on a bench too, so you can remember the successful hunts. -
That's very weird.....Is it possible the springs don't provide water year round? If there is no other water in the area, maybe they just aren't there because there is no reliable year round water. I have seen some areas that during the monsoons have tons of water and you think things look great, but then during the heat of the summer everything is dry and so no deer.

Darn Tough Socks Gear Review
CouesWhitetail replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
I am totally sold on these socks too!! I first found them a couple years ago in a store in a small town in New Hampshire while we were on vacation. Since then I have loaded up on socks for me and my husband. These are GREAT socks! They are super comfortable and very tough. And as Darr said they control moisture and odor very well!! My husband did have one pair that shrunk so much that it doesn't fit him anymore, but all the others we have bought have not done that. Not sure why that one pair did, but hey, it's just means one more pair for me! -
So great to hear yet another story of how members go the extra mile for each other!

2013-2014 Coues Buck Contest
CouesWhitetail replied to Couestracker's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
I apologize to everyone for being so slow on this. It probably never would get completed if Couestracker didn't volunteer to take this on. He has been working hard for the last month getting everything organized so we can wrap this up. Thank you Tommy! Maybe we will get this done before the beginning of archery season in two weeks! -
Yikes!

There was an excellent show on PBS the other night about how to eat healthy (yes, I know, I am nerd, I watch PBS often)..it will likely be airing often this week in case you want to try and watch it......it was all about eating more veggies and whole grains and having reasonable, small portions of meat. What trphyhtr is saying about losing weight by eating less calorie dense but high nutrient dense foods is right on the money and was talked about on the PBS show. What I have been trying to do is move away from pasta or potatoes as side dishes and use yummy veggie side dishes instead. You can eat a lot more of those and they give you disease fighting benefits as well.

Another yummy, yet healthy meal I made the other day was a Chicken, black bean, corn salad. I made it ahead of time and took it camping with us so we would have a healthy yet fast meal while doing our owl surveys. My husband grilled and smoked the lean chicken breast and we used the left overs in this salad then I cut up the chicken into bite size pieces, added frozen corn, can of whole black beans, chopped onion, chopped red pepper, and lots of cilantro. For extra flavor I added lime juice from 2 limes (probably only need one lime, but my limes were old and not so juicy) and I like lots of cumin, plus a little salt and pepper. I wish I had taken a photo....it looked beautiful and was very tasty. You can wrap in lettuce or tortillas or just eat it on it's own. it looked like this pic, only with lots of cilantro and smoked chicken. You can google chicken, bean, corn salad for a variety of recipes. You could add tomato and avocado too, which I think I will do next time. YUM!

Wow! Congratulations on already losing 74lbs....that's awesome. And I like the idea of a CW.com team for the Spartan! Maybe you could start a different thread about that and see who all is interested?

Maybe make a healthier version of this venison stuffed zucchini that I made the other day? You could do it without the meat, and without the cheese and instead add a spicy tomato sauce or something like that? http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/50465-venison-sausage-stuffed-zucchini/
