Hey Dave Sounds like you are doing great. Not sure if your shooting regiment will allow it but our archery club is having a 3D shoot at Usery the 7th and 8th. I will not be able to make it to the shoot but I will be there to set targets on Fri. I can send you the yardages for a small fee!!! LOL!!!!!!

    Opening Weekend Elk

Hunted with some good friends all weekend I did not have a tag just went to help. The wind was real bad just as we would get close it would change on us. We were very close all weekend but just never got a shot off. I left Mon afternoon.Hated to leave but had not seen the wife for 5 days and I did not have a tag. We had set a ground blind and sat it one evening but nothing came in. Well got a call Tues. night and he had sat in the blind Tues. and got one. There was a fence that ran through the center of the tank and we had set the blind so he would have a great shot over the fence at the side of the tank the elk were coming into. As luck would have it none of the elk stayed on the bank were they should have. They all came running down and into the tank behind the fence. Finally one cow gave him a shot and she dropped into the tank. Went back to get some help and had to fish her out of the tank. There night ended at about 1:00 AM. I was sorry I missed it but had a great time while I was there. Just one more tag to fill hope they were able to do it tonight but have not heard anything.

    Your First Rifle?

Those are hand loads Fed.cases,Fed. primmers,140gr.Accubonds with 49.5gr. of IMR 4350. For some reason this rifle has never liked hotter loads. But I just let it shoot what it shoots best and don"t ask it for anymore!

    Your First Rifle?

My first was my Rem. 721 270 Win. My dad bought it form a guy at work that did some snipper training with him before he retired from the Highway Patrol. Needless to say it is a shooter. It has had some work done to it and shoots better than I will ever be able to shoot it. I still use it to this day. I have had a few other rifles since I got this one but it is the one I prefer to hunt with. Some day I may find another one to shoot but nothing will replace it. My son is next in line to have it maybe next year I will try a 270 short mag. and pass it on. MAYBE!

Tree stand vs pop up ground blind

I believe it is sent. From the ground blind you are at nose level with the animal. They can still smell you from a stand but your sent is higher . Did you spray the blind/or yourself with any kind of sent killer?

    bow grips

http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.p...highlight=grips Here is a link to a guy on another site that makes some great looking grips. Have you tried shooting with no grip? I pull the grip off all my bows and put a thin pad that I buy at Wall Mart in the craft section. It has adhesive on one side then I wrap it with sports tape almost no torque.

I got bit by the bug

YoungHunter, Glad to see another archer you will love it! Like Doug said Usery has a great range there are not many out there like it. I know you did not post your picture so we could critique you but your release hand seems to be floating back to far behind your head. If you can put the string on the tip of your nose and your knuckle of your index finger should be in the whole behind your jaw under your ear. I will post a picture that should help. You may need to change the draw length to get this if it to long.Again just trying to help. Draw length is one of the most important things to shooting accuracy with archery. A 1/2in can make a huge difference. And to long a draw is worse than to short IMO.Again welcome to archery you will love it!! O'ya the yellow line shows your nock should be in line with your eye. I stold this pic from anouther web site.
  10. This is a 270 140gr Nosler Accubond bullet I recovered from my coues last year. I reload my own bullets and this one is very accurate. Not real sure how but this was a quartering away shot down hill at about 100 yards and the bullet traveled up the neck just under the skin and was recovered behind the right ear! Dropped in his tracks.
  11. Hey Mark, Thats a great buck you got there. I was reading your story about the bear and I had heard it once before. You did not happen to have some guys camped up the road from you that got stuck at about 3:00am on there way in. It was not me but I know them (my wifes uncle). Again great buck and congrats. I am still looking for my shooter buck but love to see and here great success stories.

    How Do You Practice

I like to here what you are doing is helping. I like to help out other archers as much as I can with the little I know. Weather its at the range on the net or in the shop. If I can help someone I will try. But if you 3D scores go up to much your on your own. LOL!!! Keep us posted on your progress.

    How Do You Practice

Hey Dave, It sounds to me that what you are doing will work great. Good choice on the release I have two of them I liked them so much. (one for back up) I have left a handheld in the woods a few times.I have mine set up so my thumb wraps around the barrel and when you pull with those big muscles in your back that Randy was talking about it will fire with out actually moving your thumb. That is the way it should be done but I still punch it more times than not. Two things that I do.I go to 10 yards draw the bow close my eyes and just think about pulling through the shot and making a great shot with my eyes closed. I do this until everything feels good sometimes it takes a while. The thing that I think helped me the most was going to 5 or 10 yard draw the bow and hold the pin on the spot hold it there then let down. I just kept doing this until I trained myself that I could hold it there without shooting. I can not tell you how many times I would get my pin on that spot and my whole body would flinch because my brain would want to hammer that trigger. It takes a lot of work and dedication to cure target panic I have never total gotten rid of it. It sneaks its ugly little head up at the worst moments. It has caused many archers to give up on the sport. I have seen top shooters get target panic after years of being at the top of there game. It sucks but it happens! Some times it takes a good coach to fix it but but if you can master back tension you should be able to cure target panic. Good luck and good shooting Dallas

    Archery Tips

http://www.spot-hogg.com/helpful_hints.shtml Here are some more shooting tips. Bowhunter12 if you are shooting great at 40 yards that it were you need to draw the line as a bowhunter you owe it to the animal to make a good shot. With time and practice you will be able to shoot groups out to 70 or 80 yards. I do not recommend shots that far on deer but it has been done. I see guys up at the range this time of year (just before hunting season) that have not shot there bow since last season and fling arrows out to 60,70,and 80 yards. And when I say fling I mean FLING. They hit the bail and seem to be happy with that. I know target archers that can put 4 arrows in the 3-4" spot a 80 yards and would not take a shot past 40 yards on a deer. Not saying it can not be done but you should know your limits and stick to them. You need to know deep down that you can make the shot and make it good. You do not want to wound the animal you need to make the first shot your best shot.

    String stretching?

Well what was wrong with it? What did they need to do to it. You can't just come on here and say its fixed.

    Cabelas

Went there the Fri. they opened kinda cool I thought. One of the guys I went with got some great pictures. But for some reason he only took one of a coues. He is an eastern whitetail hunter and does not care to hunt our tiny coues witch is fine by me.

    String stretching?

If you have checked your peep and nock point It sounds like you have string or cable creep not stretch. If it is creep you may need new strings and cables. I suggest Winners Choice or Vapor Trail. They have very little stretch and no creep. Have you checked your draw length and poundage. Longer cables will drop poundage and longer string will make your draw longer. If you have string stretch that means it will stretch and stop then you can twist the string and it should stay. If you have creep witch it sounds like you do it will not stop. Your loss of speed my be from the cables changing. Also your nock point will change when your string does. Sorry Iam jumping around.

    Garmin 24K map software

Thanks for all the info guys its been a great help. eyeguards, My dad is on Tonto Rim Search and Rescue everyone needs to take your advise. I ALWAYS carry a map and compass along with my GPS. I did learn that you can not always rely on just your GPS. Marked my truck one day and 2D was the best I could get with the tree and cloud cover. Lucky enough I knew were I was at because when I did the Goto to head back to the truck it told me it was 2 miles in the wrong direction. So it can happen and I had been using it for about 2 years and thought I know everything about it. Thanks Again everyone for your help!
  23. Do any of you guys have this software. I wanted to know if it just did the Natinal Parks or does it cover more of the state? Thanks Bownut
