I think the registration could have had something to do with it. In the past we would have to register. That makes a mental note for the guys who aren't CWTaholics; "Hey I had to sign up for that contest, I need to enter too." Maybe some guys thought they would automaticly be entered with a post. The only thing I can thing I can think of for catagories is the typical/non typical. That adds more catagories, but a couple NTs could blow everything out of proportion if those catagories were merged. I do think the archery/state/mexico hunts being seperated is a good thing. Some guys may feel they are at a dissadvantage if they are in the same catagory as guys who can go to Mexico. I also think it is a good thing the youths have plenty of catagories. There isn't very much pro-hunting influence on kids these days, so every bit helps. Maybe a topic consiting of buck entries only? Simple posts; no stories, just a picture, score and catagory. The only downside to that is everyone will easily be able to see what catagories are "already won". I think the same guys who regularly post here are pretty consistant with their entries. I would imagine the largest group of entries could come from guys who aren't regulars. I thought signing up instead of registering would increase those numbers though.

Might have to change my License Plate now!!
youngbuck replied to double lunger14's topic in Elk Hunting
If you don't get a new plate, might want to atleast get new tags pretty quick Pretty funny plate though. -
I watch it too. I would like to try some of the challenges and see how difficlut it is. I'm not a pistol shooter by any means, but would like to see how bad I would be on some of those challenges. Its pretty impressive how they can go to any kind of weapon, and perform the way they do.

Well I loaded 5rounds each of .5gr powder increases to max listed load. I started on what shot the best on my last outing, 89.5gr of H1000. I was only able to shoot 3 rounds. 1 fouling shot and 2 to group. I let my rifle cool down before I shot again. The wind picked up and I dedcided to wait to shoot groups untill it wasn't as windy (never clmed down that day). I went to grab my target @ 250yds and was pleasantly surprised. It is only a 2 shot group, but I was happy with it. My extreme spread was only 9fps.

Ive been working up a load for my 300RUM. The last two loads I shot were 88 and 89.5grns of h1000. I'm shooting 208 gr A-max, 215 match primers, and FL sized Rem brass. Both loads looked the same; flattened, squared off primers and some cratering from the firing pin. I have not gotten any sticky or hard bolt lifts. The groups are shrinking with the charges increasing. My last 3 shot group was a little under an inch @ 1ooyds. The 89.5gr chronographed right at 3000fps w/ a ES of 14. I'd like to keep increasing the charge to see if the groups continue to shrink or get worse. I don't want to stop short of a "super load". The gun is a factory Rem700 w/ factory 26" tube. The rifle has always been a shooter. My previous load was a 180gr AB w/ IMR4350 shooting about 3/4" @ 100. The 89.5gr h1000 load is good enough to play with to be my load now. Should I quit while I'm ahead? I'm happy w/ a factory rifle shooting under 1MOA, but would be happier with it shooting 1/2 MOA. I know there's a few hot rod loaders on here and wondering what you look for for your the max load.

I would love to find a monster when I have my camera with me. Ive never seen one out walking around. I have seen several on the roads near my parents house growing up.

Does that rail have any elevation built in it? I'm using that same scope on two different rifles and neither one needed any elevation to get to 1k. I've been real happy with the scopes so far.

I prefer 8x when archery hunting for neck binos, if I have 15s in my pack. If they are going on a tripod and aroumd your neck, the 10x50s work well.

I use it when I cook asian food, mostly sauces. I use tapatio a lot more though, I rarely make asian food.

Look into zen ray ed2s for great glass for not much money. I prefer them to the non hd razors and half the price.

He's still on the back of the helmets, it would be impossible to banish Sparky.

I don't know much about MLing, but I was pretty impressed last fall. I helped on a ML antelope hunt. They were using .44 cal hangun hunting bullets. At 225yds there was a 1" diameter hole completely through the goat. I've never seen anything like it. Ill find out the particulars.

"Jeremiah Johnson" is one of my favorites.

I shot my bull with a G5. It was a quartering away shot, that entered behind the last rib and just broke the skin on the off shoulder. They aren't near as sharp as others, but I like the way they are made. I wonder if its the injection process, and having to have a malleable enought metal to do that with that makes them "dull". I haven't had near the experience that Cooosefan has, but I can see where he is coming from.I'd like to find a one piece sturdy head that is as sharp as the best out there, and holds an edge. Ive never played with NAP hellrazors, but would like too. I have seen what the rage can do, and was impressed. I just like the one piece design, especially on elk, using heavier arrows.

Nice Rig! There are a few shops in the valley with stock of 162 Amax. My dad and I have been working up a load with them for his 7RM the past few months.

Does top of the line Optics = more deer found?
youngbuck replied to OpticNerd's topic in Optics and tripods
I'll glass with what ever I have. The better glass is a time saver. I spend less time on "deerish" rocks than I would with less clear optics. I'm sure the better glass has made me find less animals, because I can't count the rocks Ive found lots of deer with junk binos and found no deer w/ Swaros. I can decide what I'm looking at sooner with the better glass. -
Swaros, Ive used Kaibabs and Zeiss a bunch too.

Thanks guys, I don't have any marks on the head stamp of the brass yet, I figured I would slowly go a little hotter and see what I get. I have tried Retumbo, but my extreme spread was 60-80. My ES w/ H1000 is less than 20fps. I was worried about my loads getting close to max because the primers were really squared off. I've never had a load that squared off the primers this much. I'll bump up the charge a little and see how my groups change at distance. Right now I'm seating the bullets just deep enough to fit them in my magazine. I'm gonna play with that and see if turning it into a single shot helps my groups any. I did play with seating depths on some empy cases. For you guys who are seating them way out there on standard magnum actions, how to you get the loaded unfired round out? I was alomst having to take the bolt out every time when I was right up against the lands. TAM, I know a few guys using 180s that use around 100grs of Retumbo for their loads.

Guess the score contest - April 2011
youngbuck replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
129 3/8 -
My gun was never slow or fast according to any manuals on any of my other loads, pretty much in line. My gun has always cratered 215m primers. I know some guys are getting more speed with less pressure with the Retumbo. I would rather have the low velocity spread instead of a little speed w/ H1000. There isn't very much published info on 208/210 in the RUM. Walt Berger sent me some data on the 210 VLDs. He shows max load of 91.6grs h1000 @ 3036fps. I'm almost there with 89.5grs, but my primers make it seem I'm pretty close to max. I've thought about the latter test, but what charge do I stop at? I would be in the same spot, just making smaller increases. I'm not trying to run a super hot load, and velocity comes after accuracy and extreme spread for me. I just want to know where my max will be, and what other signs would indicate when I'm there.

Another option is Pacific tool and guage. I think the aluminum ones are around 100 and steel and stainless are more.

Those are some cool pics, with the dog in the tree and the superpan pose from the lion. Congrats!

Not trying to ruffel any feathers, but that last thing I would do is rush a stuck bull. If he is hit but not a perfect lung shot, give him time. If a bull is jumped up that hasn't had a perfect shot on him, he can go miles. It does get hot, and you might have to him out late at night, but you'll be packing out a bull.
