    Bighorn Guide

For an outfitter check out Double H Outfitters with Chris Harlow. The specific guides you would want to be involved are Matt Liljenquist and Randy Liljenquist. Randy has taken the North American super slam with a bow, and Matt has (or had) the New Mexico state record bighorn with a bow, and a big desert sheep from Arizona that I recall scored 175 from a mid tier unit. Matt and Randy are awesome guys as well. Both of them helped my 14 year old son get his ram on a tight timetable. Here is a video of Matt's NM bighorn hunt:
  2. The back door to see if you drew a Colorado elk tag is now open. You can now check to see if you drew your first choice elk tag in Colorado by checking to see if your preference points went to "zero" in 2013. If you gained a point, you didn't draw your FIRST choice. Here is the link: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/DrawResultsAndPrefPoints/Pages/DrawResults_PreferencePoints.aspx
  3. Utah has begun charging credit cards for the big game draw. Apparently the credit card charges started yesterday (May 14). Here is a link from a Utah hunting forum: http://utahwildlife.net/forum/12-big-game/42193-cc-hits.html
  4. I just checked and the Arizona Game and Fish website is now open for online applications for sheep and deer.

whats the best unit to get a big desert ram in?

Mtnhorud...very cool to see your ram from 39W! My son drew that same unit when he was 14 years old, in 2008, with only 4 points as a non-resident! That must be the place for younger guys to draw! His ram would have been close to 160 without the large chunk out of the horn.

    draw results?

I have a cool feature on my Capitol One Visa, it sends me a text message whenever there has been a charge on the card. When I buy fuel with it, I usually see the text before I'm even back on the road, very fast. I used it last you on my applications and it was awesome, since you can see as soon as your card is hit.

We saw a mom and her two children today at a local pond, and they were feeding the ducks about half a dozen boxes of corn flakes. I'm thinking to myself that was about $15 worth of corn flakes. I said to my wife, "Do you think those were bought with food stamps?".

    Best Antelope Unit?

With max points don't even consider any other units but Unit 10, 9, and 5B if you are after a top level trophy antelope. If you just want a nice antelope there are probably plenty of units to consider. If you want your very best chance at a huge buck hire Pronghorn Guide Service. They also do scouting packages if you are on a budget. I am a non resident and have only actually hunted Unit 9 for elk, but everything I have heard there is ample public land, you just need to know where the private is.

    Best Antelope Unit?

One problem for a max point holder in Unit 32, there has been only one tag in the last five years issued to a max point applicant in the 20% pass draw.

    Best Antelope Unit?

I have 23 points and I was seriously looking at applying this year in 5B. It has been in the top 2 or 3 units and it has a large cut in tags for 2013. I have decided to hold off one or two years and look at it again. The 2011 AZF&G Pronghorn Management Plan says the following concerning Unit 10: "In 2010, 31 fawns per 100 does were surveyed and in 2011, 53 fawns per 100 does were surveyed. This increase in fawn survival is due to predator control practices being implemented in Unit 10. Since May 2010 approximately 494 coyotes were removed by aerial gunning and trapping within 15 months." Due to the coyote control, there should be a good crop of mature bucks coming up for the 2014 and 2015 seasons on Unit 10.

    Elk Draw odds question

When the computer pulls your application in the drawing, it will first look at your first choice (the bull hunt) and if there are tags left you will get one, if not it will go on to your second choice (cow hunt). It shouldn't affect your chance to draw your cow hunt, and will give you a shot at the bull tag too. Great strategy. Here is how it could affect the draw for your cow hunt. If you have been applying for cow hunts as your first two choices, and you have occasionally drawn your second choice cow hunt, you will no longer have that second choice fall back.
  17. That is an excellent video. My nephew posted it on Facebook this morning. That video needs to go viral. Very well done. Thanks coues 7 for posting a link on here.

    I'm new to the forum

Hi......I recently found this site and have been reading the forum posts the last few weeks. I just signed up and wanted to introduce myself. I'm from SW Oregon and have been applying in Arizona since the mid 1980's. I'm looking forward to getting to know you guys and contributing where I can to the forum threads. Although I have more recent pictures, I though the one below was especially appropriate since many of you guys are from Arizona. It's a few years old, but it is a picture of my son's 2008 Arizona desert sheep. He was 14 years old when he drew, and due to a family crisis, we only had four days for the hunt. In the picture going left to right is our guide Matt Liljenquist, my son, and myself. My son wrote an article about his hunt and it was published in the Huntin Fool magazine (May 2009).

    Unit 1 Archery Elk

Zim....In their last issue, Huntin Fool is saying all the Unit 1 archery tags went to applicants with at least 11 points last year (2012). According to Hunters Trailhead, at 11 points nonresident applicants have drawn in the max point pool (20% pass) every year for the past 5 years. The draw odds have ranged from 8% to 67%. HT says the odds were 21% in 2012. There is apparently a report available at AZF&G, that the outfitters have access to, that specifically breaks out the nonresident odds. I wish I could get my hands on a copy.

    Unit 1 Archery Elk

DesertBull: I've been interested in the pattern following the Rodeo fire. The Rodeo Chediski fire was the summer of 2002. Early bull archery tags in 3A/3C were as follows: 2001: 50 tags, 78% success 2002: 50 tags, 52% success (The fire was the summer of 2002) 2003: 50 tags, 68% success (34 bulls killed) 2004: 50 tags, 70% success (38 bulls killed) 2005: 90 tags, 74% success (67 bulls killed) 2006: 100 tags, 63% success (63 bulls killed) 2007: 100 tags, 62% success (55 bulls killed) 2008: 150 tags, 57% success (86 bulls killed) 2009: 150 tags, 32% success (46 bulls killed) 2010: 125 tags, 50% success (63 bulls killed) 2011: 125 tags, 29% success (35 bulls killed)
