    Trying Anything New This Offseason?

Working on my pack string and fly camp set up. Fitness not an issue and I can shoot my bow every day so now I am working on a new mule so I can ride one and pack 2 . Major pain in the butt packing this way and trying to hunt yourself. The biggest issue I am having is my new mule yard saleing my packs ounce in a while and when I get to where i am going and want to hunt I need to be able to leave them grazing. Sometime there's no graze, no water, and of course they wonder off a bit. I will be set up nice if things come together on these 2 issues though. Hope and prey to pack some meat this year with them. My meat or friends, don't matter to me. I am sure they will love the meat on their backs too. I guess I can use the new mule to tenderize the meat.

    Cause of Death

This was so funny, nice job!!!!! seriously unless you find tracks, teeth marks that can be measured, or other signs you cant really say what happened for sure. The area you find it has some merit. I know I have read articles in Bugle about the wolf issues and they say they confirm wolf depredation but how they do that I am not sure. Had to have been obvious signs of the killer being wolf.

    March bears

Spent the weekend 3 days in 5A riding and saw some elk on the hoof but no sheds or bears. No bear sign of any kind. We didn't get off trail much due to the moisture still in the ground so not surprised on the lack of sign. Still some patches of snow up on top and tons of water. Should be a good green up soon up there. Didn't see much of a food source for bears either as far as fresh grass or nuts and berries. I know 5A isn't open for bear right now but thought I would mention anyway.

How did you process your pig?

Just wondering and learning. With 2 pigs down this year I just quartered them and pulled backs and some misc meat off then packed out in game bags and plastic bags. I noticed alot of folks hauling the whole pig. We did have a long hike or I may have done the trophy thing. Now back at home i wish I would have. I brought the meat home and deboned and am cutting with bacon and pork shoulder now for breakfast sausage. When I was skinning I noticed the meat was pretty warm on the back strap area until I got the skin off so I was glad I went that route. This was my first ever butcher job and it went pretty well but was just wondering how some others handle theirs? If there are other threads on this just send me that way, no need to start over on an old subject. Congrats to all who got to hunt his season taggers and tag soupers alike. Looks like after cutting in 15 lbs of pork and 1 lb of bacon I will have roughly 45-50 lbs of sausage so there goes my diet plan for the new year!

Scouting service..is worth it. Anyone have experience?

Never heard of that before. Sounds like it could work if it was someone you trusted but I could see the money passing hands and some past experience being passed along without any actual current scouting happening. I would ask if you could get some video or pics with current dates close to your hunt time. I went back through some of the old threads on here and found some good info on units I was looking at. If you go the scout service route post some data on it.

    SB 1223 for AZGF

Sounds like a good deal to me but it could get out of hand. Anyone have any experience with other states having this option? www.azgfd.gov/LicenseSimplification.

    March bears

Me and my buddy did 2 spring hunts last year and found tracks but no luck on dropping one. We called in unit 22 and 27. We are heading up to 23N for this year so we will see. Taking the mules up shed hunting but bringing the calls and tags for bear.

Rolling the mules up for a pack trip and shed hunt end of March. Maybe a Bear tag will come with us too.

  14. Dear Valued Customer, One million is an attention-getting number, no matter what the circumstances. At MidwayUSA, Brenda and I - along with the MidwayUSA Employees - have celebrated a good many 'one million' milestones during the last 35+ years. In 1983, our seventh year in business, we reached the milestone of one million dollars in business during a single calendar year. 2008 was the first year we filled one million orders for our Customers. In 2012 your NRA "Round-Up" contributions, through MidwayUSA, exceeded one million dollars during that single year. Please note that NRA "Round-Up" contributions come from you, our Customers, and each week since 1992 we have sent your contributions directly to the NRA/ILA National Endowment for the Protection of the 2nd Amendment. Our Customers should get all the credit for that, we just collect and remit your money. Now, in March of 2013 came another milestone to celebrate - one million active Customers - Customers who have ordered from MidwayUSA during the last twelve months. For a country kid from Missouri, that's an amazing milestone. I believe our vision to be the best-run, most-respected business in America, for the benefit of our Customers, our family values and our relentless pursuit of Customer Satisfaction are what brought us to this milestone of one million active Customers. Brenda and I, along with all the Employees at MidwayUSA, thank you very much for your support. As you might imagine, we gave quite a bit of thought as to how we could celebrate. Should we choose our one millionth active Customer and give he or she a special gift? Well, we could have done that, but all of our Customers are equally important, not just the one who put us over the top. Then someone came up with the idea that we should donate $1 to the NRA for each of our active Customers. Well, let's see, what is $1 times one million? And so it was! On Monday morning about 10am, when we went over one million active Customers, MidwayUSA authorized our bank to send a wire transfer of one million dollars to the NRA/ILA National Endowment for the Protection of the 2nd Amendment; because we can and because we should. Thanks a Million! Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA 5875 West Van Horn Tavern Rd. Columbia, MO 65203 ©2013 MidwayUSA, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

    Whats your dream hunt?

Some asked me this and it ended up like the lottery question that comes up around the fire. Rather than endlessly going on and on of possibilties I decided to reroute the question and say what would you rather do and give 2 options. A) If it was all paid would you rather go on a fully prepped full on 2 week drop camp in the wilderness of your choice with 2 freinds for multiple species including fishing with meat pick ups and resupply OR,,, A fully funded full on fully staffed hunting lodge near the wilderness of your choice for 2 weeks with a 1 on 1 guide and your 2 buddies where you could hunt and fish and eat and sleep all at the lodge.

    Whats your dream hunt?

I read a book about newzeeland and they have some cool sounding multi species hunts over there but I think most are backpack and really rough terrain. Sounded like some real adventure. I am not sure on a dream hunt though.

How did you process your pig?

That's what I thought. I will tell you what, I am very picky about my food and have a hard time eating others food for this reason, they just cant treat it as good as I do. I cook alot and have done some catering and private dinners for clients so the meat care was #1 for me. I skinned and qtrd and stripped as much meat as I could with the gutless method then put it in game bags and then in a trash bags all within 1 hr of killing. On the way to the truck I burried the bags in the sand in the cool bends of washes and then waited for the sun to go down before finishing the trip. I packed Ice all around in the cooler until it got home then a day later I boned out trimmed and ground with pork fat into breakfast sausage and man was it good. I also fried a backstrap in butter, sage, salt and pepper and man was it good. First butcher job and first time javi eater and not my last. Thanks for all the info.

    Whats your dream hunt?

Man I need some new freinds, they all picked the lodge. Well if this ever happens I know where to find the 2 buddies. Option #1 for me too.

How did you process your pig?

Nice deal, hangin for 5 days huh? I saw some guys in like 75 degree weather durring the archery hunt and they hung theirs all day ? I figured they would go bad in those conditions? Does it seem better to age them?

8 for 10 in Unit 18B general rifle! Big Pig winners announced!

What would you consider a good herd size if 4 or 5 is low? Congrats on some good hunting numbers. I didn't weigh mine but ended up with 20 lbs of sausage last night from 2 pigs. Thought it would be more but now that I see the actual weights I see its about right.

    canned bear hunt video

Good points, Like you said not my cup of tea on some things. Good thing there are some out there who can do that type of managing. Now I don't have an issue with baited bears under a tree stand if I took the time to research and bait myself and did all the leg work to get the bears in and then I took one. I was thinking of paying 10,000.00 to someone a thousand miles away and flying in to a warm bed then getting hauled in a UTV to a spot where they have bears waiting for me. Dont think I would be happy in the end doing that. Or Maybe its because I don't have the ten grand. LOL There is something invaluable in working for it for me. It keeps me sane from day to day doing the research, pouring over maps, hitting the field, for months before going after game.
