Thoughts on trail cam results?
Lazy-H98 replied to YoungHuntr's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Is it possible they are able to hit the spring just outside of your camera angle? Also springs can go below ground and pop back up somewhere else where they might be drinking. My guess is the older bucks are probably nearby but drinking somewhere else. They are very habitual unless they are bumped or pressured especially when these hunts start up. After the morning glass, focus your glassing on the north, northwest facing slopes the rest of the day. Stay with it. -
All opinions and advice are welcome. Ground rules:keep it clean in case the kiddos are watching, lets behave like adults and make this a healthy debate. The back story-I have been stacking up the bonus points for the early rifle bull tag. The statistics show that the likely hood of me drawing in 2017 is very good. Earlier this year I have began scouting units I'm familiar with and potential new prospect units. The muscle (or lack of muscle)-a .270 Win model 70 that I'm very comfortable out to 400 yards. Next a .308 Remington model 788 that I'm very comfortable out to 300 yards (mostly due to bullet drop). Some will say shot placement has more to do then caliber choice in terms of measuring success. I know what Jack O'Connor would lobby for.........Should I look to add to my arsenal with some knock down power insurance, yet still have a functioning shoulder when I grow old and gray? Which happens to be around the corner I might add.........There is going to be plenty of factors that are beyond my control already. Rifle choice doesn't have to be one. This is going to be a very special tag. Ok CW community, time to weight in...... (If this has been talked about in length already my apologies)

Thank you all for encouragement, wisdom and advice. Exactly the information and opinions I was hoping for.

Aw man I was afraid of this. Placing the rifle hunt first puts it too early in my opinion. The big boys haven't even moved in yet. I've been stacking up bonus points for the early rifle hunt in both those units. Now I hear that unit 10 is drying up, dang. Should have rolled the dice before the fire.

Wrk2Hnt-congrats on wrapping a tag around what appears to be a warrior. From what I read, you put the time and effort in DIY style, What did you put him down with?
-
Good luck. I'll be up there next weekend looking for that pink turkey!
-
Way to get it done. Congrats.

Always aim low on angled shots.

Received my leftover deer tag on Monday. Received my normal draw fall turkey on Tuesday.

Is the west side of the Huachucas getting rain too? I'll be down there in 2 weeks for the archery hunt. I also have a 35A Black Friday tag.

Checked my camera the other day. Enjoy.

Giant Archery Arizona Coues Buck by Hunter James Dudley

Just listened to the podcast this morning on the way into work. I really enjoyed the back story. Just a normal Joe like most of us. I was tipped off about Jay's podcasts a few months ago right before my spring turkey hunt, been hooked ever since. I began jumping around a bit on them and soon figured out they are too darn good to miss. So I started from episode 1 back in May. Just finished episode 69 to work my way up to present day. Great buck, even better story. Thank you both for sharing. -
LOL. I was hoping to get some deer on it but no dice, so I pulled my camera to relocate it. Had it there for 15 days.

Those are sweet. Thanks for sharing.

Correct. In the portal, click on "My Applications/Tags". There it will show your pending tag if you have been issued a leftover tag with hunt number. If you click to the right of that on "More Detail" is will display your tag number. I dropped mine off at the post office mailbox inside at 5:30pm, standard mail on Thursday night at the post office on Dobson north of Chandler Blvd. Been doing that for years.

I just checked my portal, shows pending for the first choice on my leftover application.
-
I was wondering the same thing.
-
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to go check my two cameras. One in unit 1 and one in unit 23.

Yes. Be in line when the post office opens.
