    Archery Pre-Season Excitement

We may have to compare scores someday. I was under the impression I was the worst javelina Hunter in the state.

    Elk vs Javelina

Interesting topic. Elk have been witnessed on Mt. Graham. And decades ago didnt they find one dead near Gila Bend? Furthest north Ive heard of Javelina is unit 9. But it seems they could do well from Kingman north.
  5. I really like the look of the ram you call white eye. I like when their horns are all beat up like that. Ok, Yes or No question... is the auction tag holders ram still in 22?
  6. There's Danner, but only about half of theirs are made here. And I'v heard just as much bad about them as I have good. Are there any other american made brands that are suited for southwestern type hunting? i.e. lots of rocks and cactus and steep canyons.
  7. Dont know if any one here is familiar with this area but on east Verde Ranch road, east of Paulden, Arizona there is a dilapidated metal structure. It actually looks like and old gas station but I dont see where there were fuel tanks. I had a picture but now cant seem to find it on this computer. Has anyone ever seen this thing and do you know anything about it? It just made me curious. Thanks
  8. Mulepackhunter hit the nail on the head. Especially the part about clear cutting and more fires. Mandatory reporting is a good idea too but a lot of guys would lie on thier reports (I have family in NM where reporting is mandatory, they firmly believe that if they tell g&f that they were successful that they wont get drawn the next year. Even though they dont get drawn every year anyway, go figure). Sitting out a year after a premium tag or ANY antelope tag since they are pretty much all premium is also a good idea. And of course water water water. 8 is a good example there are also quite a few volunteer built trick tanks in unit 8. They should just give a lion tag free with every combo license and any out of state license.. Also I'm not a fan of point restrictions. Ive hunted a few times in NM which has a 3pt on one side or better restriction and I dont see that it has made their herd any healthier than ours. Unless your a forkie.

    10 and 1 in Seattle?

They are the definition of implosion.
  10. i looked at the recomendations for next year and there's a slight decrease in archery bull tags as well as a decrease in elk tags in general. Didnt see anything about earlier muzzy hunts.

Love my old Eberlestock. Probably overkill on most outings but its tough as nails and carries everything.

  19. Wow. Again I commend you on your photos and what a great ram. You guys are proof that when you do things right success follows. Congrats again to Mr. O'Connor.
  20. Been happening for a loooooong time. Mule deer hunting has been poor for quite a while and while other Western states seem to have recovered some were still the same. Trophy elk hunting in AZ probably peaked a decade ago. From what I've heard NO units are managed for quality any longer. Coues will be next. The units just can't handle that kind of pressure for ever and the tag levels will continue to increase. Antelope hunting and sheep hunting is too rare to be considered. Party hunting like was described in an earlier post is way more common than we realize. This website attracts a higher quality of hunters that are not the majority. So the majority are the demographic that AZG&F has chosen to ride with for obvious reasons. There are other factors I believe as well... increasing predator problems, poorly managed public land and loss of habitat to name a few.
  21. Great ram! Congrats to Mr. O'Connor. You guys take the best field photos. I don't think many outfitters even consider the importance of well done photos. Well done.
  22. It was just a little sarcasm. Great optics.
  23. I noticed they have no attachments for a neck strap. I wonder why that is?

    Controlled Burn in Unit 22N

I had a late archery hunt in 22 when they were having a control burn. I was sitting a tank when a smoldering oak tree flamed back up. Just as I thought Id better get going... a whole herd of cows and calves came bumbling in. They didnt seem to mind the burning tree at all until it fell over then they stampeded. 30 minutes later they were back. Two days later I shot at and missed a bull off the same tank. A small seep about a 1/4 mile away had a melted trail camera and the skeleton of a pop up ground blind on it.
