Those are similar numbers to what I see as well. At 308 velocities we are talking 3" at a 1,000yds and less when a faster chamber/projectile is used as the time of flight is reduced. What I really wanted to make clear to folks (without sounding like I was arguing) is that there are much more important things to correct for (wind and spin)

Love that Seekins bottom metal! I'm running the same one.

Interesting. Is that spin drift and coriolis? with 308?

Thanks all, I'm still on cloud nine. The emotions on a hunt like that can be some real highs and lows. Seeing a monster cruise a field edge 100yds across a bean field knowing you cant do anything but sit in your stand real rips at a guy. I'd walk miles of nasty country to get a chance at a buck like this one but sitting a stand seams so much harder. If you pressure a mature buck with hard horns but before the rut you can almost guarantee he is not going to stick around. I grew up hunting that way and I love it but it has been replaced by spot and stalk western hunting at the top of my list.

Congrats. That dark face reminds me of the swamp deer in South Carolina.

Fact: I wrote it backwards somehow when speaking about the effects at the poles vs the equator. Good catch and thanks for the keeping me honest While the rest of your information looks good I still don't think any of this will be a factor at hunting ranges. Even at 800-1000 yards with modern high velocity projectiles. I think Coriolis gets turned into a buzz word that gets thrown around in shooting circles. It absolutely exists and is necessary for an extremely small niche of extreme distance guys. The kicker is do the gadgets discussed in the thread actually calculate (correctly) for the equation(s) necessary to make an absolute correction? At what range (distance) have you experienced Coriolis alone shifting your point of impact more than 1 or even .75 MOA?

Interesting that the die, when properly adjusted wouldn't bump those suspect cases back into specs. If yours is working fine with un-modded case holders and dies then I'd just carry on.

New Coues Hunter / Fort Huachuca
WampusCat replied to scrothers's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
The good news is that is a great place for a first time hunter. There are literally deer all over the place. It will be a great place to learn western hunting. Tips will be the same for any other unit with similar terrain. Get the best optics you can afford, get on a high spot and let your eyes do the walking. It may seem difficult at first to spot them but once you pick up a deer, your brain will have a reference and you will find them easier. The downside to hunting the base is areas will open and close at random for training and your honey hole might get locked down the week you want to hunt. Good luck and post up some pics from your adventures. -
Thanks fellas mattys281, I just read your Nebraska post. Good luck on your Dec hunt if you get back up there.

Berger 308 cal. Match Classic Hunter Bullets in 168 grain
WampusCat replied to azsugarbear's topic in Classified Ads
You 308 guys out there should hop all over these! -
Very cool story and pics! Thank for sharing. I am imagining that bull all fired up at 20 ft when your smoke wagon went off and then waiting for the cloud to clear and seeing him laying there.

Good luck brother! I cant make it this year but I will be looking for some of your pics. -
Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I love the character on the heavy bull!

Will it be to early?
WampusCat replied to Coues assassin's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
CouesPursuit is spot on. Scouting is just as effective on waterfowl as it is big game. Put your decoys where the feed is and you will be in the birds if they are in the area. When the big migration comes remember they have covered some serious distance, seen lots of "spreads", and heard lots of "calls". -
I told you if you are comfortable shooting 120yds with your bow you can use that abandoned blind where we found that abandoned trail cam.
-
Good luck to you and the boy. Keep after it!
-
Thanks, I'm looking forward to it.

I have a question for those of you who may be "in the know." Websites like S & S archery offer custom built Montana Black Gold sights. In the options list for the Ascent model, you can select a "single up pin" option for the housing. You can also custom build the Ascent Ambush which is the single pin version of the Ascent sight. Price with a 4" dovetail is about $15 difference between the two sights. I can't find any literature out there regarding the differences in the sights configured as single pin setups. Am I gaining or giving up anything by choosing the one vs. the other? Thanks for any insight you may have. Next stop is a phone call to S&S.
