Very cool story and pics! Thank for sharing. I am imagining that bull all fired up at 20 ft when your smoke wagon went off and then waiting for the cloud to clear and seeing him laying there.

Will it be to early?

CouesPursuit is spot on. Scouting is just as effective on waterfowl as it is big game. Put your decoys where the feed is and you will be in the birds if they are in the area. When the big migration comes remember they have covered some serious distance, seen lots of "spreads", and heard lots of "calls". -
I told you if you are comfortable shooting 120yds with your bow you can use that abandoned blind where we found that abandoned trail cam.

Good luck to you and the boy. Keep after it!

lol^ It takes all kinds! Seriously though. I bet most guys on here would have stopped and given him a hand wrastlin that monster up there.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it.

I have a question for those of you who may be "in the know." Websites like S & S archery offer custom built Montana Black Gold sights. In the options list for the Ascent model, you can select a "single up pin" option for the housing. You can also custom build the Ascent Ambush which is the single pin version of the Ascent sight. Price with a 4" dovetail is about $15 difference between the two sights. I can't find any literature out there regarding the differences in the sights configured as single pin setups. Am I gaining or giving up anything by choosing the one vs. the other? Thanks for any insight you may have. Next stop is a phone call to S&S.

I heard that bull was taken at long range with an expandable broad head while it was treating it's taste buds to a bit of "livestock" mineral. The DIY hunter shot from a tree stand he had left in the woods for 73 hours, after he E-scouted the best spot to put it. Also heard the hunter said any outfitters were free to use this picture in their brochures. Could be a rumor though?

+1 on the Obenaufs! Keeps the leather in top condition in our dry climate too.

Thanks! I should be more clear though. The sight you describe is exactly what I wanted. After purchasing it and reviewing my order online I realized I had ordered a different sight. I ordered the regular Ascent (not the Ambush version I wanted). During the custom build process I selected the single vertical pin option. (This option is probably why I didn't realize what I had done) My question was to see if anyone knew if what I am getting will be substantially different then the Ambush I intended to buy. I just got an email saying it shipped so I guess I'm all in now.

Welcome aboard. Lots of great folks in here. Be sure to post pics from your adventures.

Any luck on your scout trip?

The option I selected was "single pin up" so I believe that is referring to a vertical pin. Which is what I want.

Don't know how I missed this one. Very cool. Great story and appreciate the write up! Thanks for sharing.

Big congrats on your bull. 26 yds broadside and got it done!
-
Great pack. I'd be all over it if it was a diff color. Free bump

Very cool. Stands like those make good memories! What are your sons plans for the hide? Sell, Mount, Rug? Tough decisions for a first cat.

Looks like a good haul! That has to be the best way to kick off hunting season. No pressure. Just good times. -

Seriously though... The skill you must possess to be at a full sprint and calculate the necessary lead for a critter running full tilt and still connect with a perfectly chucked spear is pretty awesome. They sure do get off a volley though. Lots of spears in the air. Also of note, it would be much easy to find your "arrow" after a miss. The californian hippies should ban spear chucking.
