Kelvin Down Hoody vs Kifaru Lost Park Parka
WampusCat replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in The Campfire
Just bought a super down with the Memorial Day sale. It packs tiny into one of the pockets. I can tell its gonna be crazy warm. It's also extremely package and light. It doesn't feel like it would be durable enough as an active hunting outer layer but that's not why I picked it up. My intent is a lightweight layer that doesn't take up pack space that I can put on when I get to a glassing spot and stow when I'm trucking along again. You'll def need a Xxl in the Kuiu! -
Another vote for Wylde! Specifically designed to shoot both accurately.

63 yds with a Nova! Old school long range like Quigly Down Under.

Best Rifle Scope with custom turret option
WampusCat replied to joeinaz's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
No worries. I have the same conquest (6.5-20) on my heavy barrel AR and it has served me well. Like you say though, it is very limited in vertical adjustment. -
.67" isn't terrible at all and not far from your goal of 1/2" at all. Let us know what you end up squeezing out of it.

Any plans to try a different bullet? I have read nothing but guys having trouble find a good load for the ABLRs. All flavors of AMAX and Berger VLD Hybrids seem to shoot with a broad range of recipes.

Oh I didnt realize that. Def makes sense for them. Haha on the lame club. Who in the heck would dream up something like that. Congrats on the 1st choice draw!

I second the comments of one of theses threads. The only thing a local shop has to offer is service. No service, no problem. It's probably online for cheaper anyway. I'd rather support local though.

Do you know if they have plans to leave the deadline late or was it just for this year?

Best Rifle Scope with custom turret option

Apples to oranges. That has nothing to do with MOA vs Mil and everything to do with the 30mm tube on that SWFA vs the 1" tube on the 6.5-20 Conquest I am assuming you are talking about. If you had a Valdada 3-18 with a 35mm tube you would get 25 MOA in one revolution or just under 7.5 Mils. MOA and Mils are simply a unit of measurement. There are many factors including thread pitch of the turrets, main tube diameter, and the fulcrum point of the erector that dictate how much adjustment the erector tube is given per revolution of the turret. No offense Casey and I didn't mean to drag this out but I didn't want to leave mis-information out there. How would you compare that SWFA glass to your Conquest? -
Both solid points. If you are familiar and comfortable with your setup, you will be able to make many different options work. Practice whatever you go with and the rest will fall in place on game day.

Incredible billy! That mount will do him justice for years to come. Thanks for sharing. You should do a write up of your hunt!

All the jacked up stuff going on in this country and this is the "cause" these chuckleheads want to get behind??? Protesting the very people who want these animals to stick around for the long haul. I'd guess most people in attendance have contributed more to big-game conservation than the lot of those sign holders.

+1, I recently bought a mil scope, I like it over moa so far, but that's just in theory as I haven't taken or to the range yet. What is it that you like about a mil scope over moa without using it? You get more elevation per revolution with mil. On which model scope does choosing Mil over MOA get you more elevation per revolution? -
Totally dependent on manufacturer. It is usually possible with some research to find the barrel you are looking for with zero wait time. Many online stores and even brick and mortar places in the phoenix area keep open orders with different barrel makers to have stock on hand for sale. Whatcha building?

New 6.5mm Wildcat Cartridge
WampusCat replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I'll be interested to see what max safe speeds you can squeeze from that thing. And how the long neck mitigates the throat erosion. I love fast 6.5's. I built my 6.5 SAUM to do similar things but with the hope of longer barrel life. When you can get a bullet with a BC near or above .6 moving at 3100+ you are "doin work" ! Would def try some H1000 or RL26 in that case too. -
For you guys using the Sawyer filters... Have you ever or how often do you have a clog that requires back flushing the filter? When/if the clog happens is it happening only with with visibly fouled water with debris suspended?

Redding competition here as well. RCBS standard dies work fine for grandpas Naught-Six but for my precision stuff I want absolute control. I really geek out on ballistics, internal, external, and terminal. My goal is to completely eliminate and variable except me. I want to know that if I miss, there is zero chance it was my equipment. As stated bushing dies allow you to control neck tension. Absolute control will require turning necks. I keep turning to a minimum by determining the thinnest common neck wall thickness and cleaning the others up to be equal. This and annealing will allow you to achieve a very consistent neck tension that will reflect in tangible results on the chrono and vertical spreads. It's not for everybody but its a requirement for me when distance is involved. I would highly recommend bumping the shoulder the minimum (couple thousandths) to allow head spacing your WinMag off the shoulder rather than the belt. There is more than one way to skin this cat like overall length gauges or Redding competition shell holder sets.

Me and a few friends are headed up. See you there.

Great work! You never disappoint.

Maybe my online component hunting skills are getting weak, but I have not been able to find any Fed215M primers for over a year now. Every faithful supplier I have ever used has been bone dry for too long! Not sure what's going on.

New Reloader Questions
WampusCat replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
If you like Alliant powders I would look into RL23 and RL26. RL23 is supposed to be the temp insensitive brother to the 22. I've read great things about the speed and temp stable (+/- .5 fps per degree) abilities of the RL26. I love H-1000 and burn it in several guns/calibers. Your velocity (from an accurate chrono) will tell a great deal about your load by way of extreme spread (ES) and standard deviation (SD) of a string of shots. Consistency and repeatability in all steps of the process is key to an accurate load. When you get the load recipe right the chrono numbers will let you know. I would also recommend a ladder test at the furthest distance you are comfortable shooting accurately (500+ yds?). The longer the distance the more obvious the results will be. When your ladder test shows a number of different charge weights grouping together (vertical distance is only concern) then I proceed with fine tuning powder weights and seating depth. Remember to change only one variable at a time and don't be afraid to re-test your results to confirm your findings.
