Under Armour pisses off hunting community

Wasn't talkin to you specifically. Mostly the holier than thou trolls on social media. You know the type. Big talk while at work about unwavering ethics and their mad skillz. Then on game day they shoot nothing but the sh!t. You'll never see me get hot and bothered over a critter someone killed after they paid the equivalent of a couple home loans and enlisted the help of a small army of trail cam pic peddlers. More power to them and their weird (to me) hunting style. They are hunting the way they want (or can in most cases I'd guess) and if you drew a line in the dirt I'd still stand on their side. Same for spear chunkin celebrity wanna be types who get all the attention they want from all the wrong people. At least they are spending that loot on hunting and not floating it to granolas working to end our culture and traditions. This wasn't much different than a Texas whitetail hunt from a box, 90 yds from a corn spraying oasis, shooting one of outdoor life's most recently reviewed super magnums. I wonder if he even Mtn Ops ?

Under Armour pisses off hunting community

It's legal, go for it. Whatever blows your skirt up. Some guys whining about it would be the ones defending the rich boys who send platoons of goons to the hills in search of monster bucks, only to stroll in for the kill shot and obligatory outfitter watermark photo. If you are bashing another hunter for his chosen flavor you might as well be an anti. Prolly just jealous of his mad spear chuckin skills.

    Good coues rifle scope?

I'm not a NF fan boy but I was impressed enough to save coins for 3 of them over the last 8 years, even selling my other glass to afford it along the way. Their durability is great and I have been very happy with the glass quality on the NXS models I have. I will pick up an ATACR soon and I don't think I will ever buy another LR rig scope. I'll just rotate the ones I have as new rifles come along. I feel like they are lifetime investments. I may sound like a broken record but I cannot fathom the hunting scenario where FFP is needed. It sounds cool and looks cool at the range in front of friends but the utility just isn't there for me. With modern flat trajectory cartridges a hold over or turret adjustment isn't required till your beyond 300 yards. A serious adjustment wont be needed till past 400 yds and you could arguably just hold high. The OP's 7/08 with a 200 yd zero is likely 18"-20" low at 400 or 4.5 - 5 MOA (even less with magnum cartridges). Yes, easily held over with a matching reticle but also easily spun on a turret if for some reason you were not a max zoom at 400 yds. Beyond 400 yds I would argue that few are the guys who will be shooting at a tiny Coues deer and not cranking their scope to max zoom. Almost all SFP optic reticles are calibrated for max zoom thus negating any need for FFP. Be honest with yourself about what you "need" and spend the money on features that will meet your objectives. My .02 would be those Zeiss HD5's will be hard to beat for your situation and their sale price. Good luck on your choice and post some pics when you get it set up and slinging lead.

What do YOU use to anneal brass??

I actually just ordered the last of my parts to build my own machine. Pretty simple to make but mostly I wanted to automate my process so I can be more precise with consistency and not have to handle each case in the process. Hope to be able to set up and run a hundred or two at a time. Some guys buy expensive machines and some just use a deep well socket, cordless drill, and a torch. There are many options but basically you need to heat the neck and shoulder so it hits 750 and get it out of the flame. Products like tempilaq will let you know when you are hitting the right temp. Quenching in water is not required. I should be clear that it is time+temp that anneals brass. It can take minutes at 660 or seconds at 750. Minutes in the flame would allow the whole case to heat up and soften the whole case ruining the brass and potentially becoming dangerous to shoot.

    Merino socks????

Also camo fire has merino socks at $6.50 a pair right now. I like the Lorpen cool max synthetics they have on there as well. 2 pair for $8.99

    Merino socks????

Never wore a liner sock but my sad looking hooves have been stuffed in boots since I could walk. A good sock and more importantly a good fitting boot will eliminate most blister issues. I really like the first lite socks. For some reason I like over the calf socks when I'm on the trail and the first lite's are they best I've worn.

    RCBS Chargemaster question

I thought I was gonna be so much faster when I got my chargemaster but now I'm just standing there waiting more lol. When I used to use a lee scoop to get me close before trickling I was busier and time seem to pass quicker. Always something I guess. Now I just do something else while I wait.

    Chronograph

Not Lance but you got it right. They difference would be tiny if measurable at all with so many other factors in a long shot. Your velocity will get you close enough to make fine adjustments when confirming drops at distance. Applied Ballistics has an accurate measurement of the BC for your 180's (G7 - .345?). Using that BC and your actual drops at distance to work backward on a ballistic calculator will help determine the most accurate velocity data. Adding current environmental conditions to your calculator during confirmation will make your data even more solid/repeatable.

    Chronograph

More than one way to skin a cat for sure. If you go the cheap route make sure you keep fresh batteries in it when you head to the range. I've had issues with a couple cheaper models, specifically random odd numbers and complete failure to recognize a shot. I am far to OCD with load development and data to finally make a trip to the range only to watch a chrono do weird things. A chrono is your friend when precision loading. When I find out a friend is a Iiar I don't keep them around very long. I can't stand the thought of spending so much time and money, taking every precision step along the way and then being comfortable with mediocre inconsistent results. If getting close is all you are after, and for some that may be all you need, I wouldn't waste money on a cheap chrono. Punch some numbers in your computer and you will be in the same ballpark. Plenty of programs and/or documented data out there to get you a starting point. Looked forever at other options and borrowed a friends magnetospeed. Made my decision pretty quick. I got a magnetospeed V3 on sale for $250 and the sporter can be had for less than $200 . Messing with the harmonics by hanging on the barrel was my chief concern. The effect hasn't been nearly as bad as I worried about but the data is spot on and verified against high end Oehler models and Doppler technology. They can be switched from rifle to rifle in seconds, in fact the setup is quicker than any traditional screened model. They work! My goal when loading for accurate rifles is to eliminate as many variables as possible. An accurate chrono will help you do that. I am the the poster child for frustration caused by a chrono that produces false data, no matter how much I saved initially with the cheaper model.

    Lightweight quality tripods?

I have (2) promasters, a 325 and a 525. No issues with either. The included ball heads aren't anything to write home about, but the legs are great and I haven't had any issues. I have had the 325 for four years. I know a couple people who have been running one for longer than that without issues. Use them in the field year round for hunting and photography. What pieces has he lost? I am notoriously hard on gear but will admit that I tend to baby anything related to my optics.

    Lightweight quality tripods?

I am an admitted tripod junky. I have have become addicted to buying, trying, and selling to find the perfect combo of lightweight, small collapsed length, and durability. I am constantly buying and selling them in my search but I have owned aluminum and carbon models from Vangaurd, Manfrotto, Slik, Promaster, and Sirui, I primarily glass sitting down and my go to lightweight tripod is the Promaster XC525c. It is right at 2 lbs and collapses to under 16" but gets up to 59". I am right at 6ft tall and by the time I add a head and the Outdoorsman Bino Adapter I can easily glass standing up comfortably without straining. My current favorite for a bigger pod is a Sirui N-2204X I picked up in a tiny camera shop on sale. 4 section carbon legs, weighing 3.25 lbs and a load rating of 33lbs for under $300. Having said all that, I just saw that Slik released a new compact model that will compete with the Promaster 525. I believe it is called the Slik CF522. It would be worth a look! I have never bit the bullet and threw down the cash for an Outdoorsman's but I am sure they are nice. Cheap, Lightweight, Durable - Pick two cause that is all you get. I only buy these things on sale and it still hurts sometimes.

    Pollitical Correctness and Thin Skin

First step is not bending to the will of the whiners. If he moved the truck then they won in their minds. Now they are off looking for the next thing to be offended by and assert their social dominance over.

    Outdoor Quotes

Every now and again I stumble across a quote that really resonates down to the bone with me. There are a few that once I read them, I will return several times to take in the meaning of the words and pause to reflect on my own life. There is an instant connection with the author and feel like though we have never met, we would have been great friends. Theodore Roosevelt and Aldo Leopold have many great ones but I ran across this one last week that cuts pretty deep. "Despite our ever-changing, ever indignant world with its growing ignorance of and indifference to the way of the wild, I remain a predator, pitying those who revel in artificiality and synthetic success while regarding me and my kind as relics of a time and place no longer valued or understood. I stalk a real world of dark wood and tall grass stirred by the restless wind blowing across sunlit water and star streamed skies and on those occasions when I choose to kill, to claim some small part of natures bounty for my own, I do so by choice, quickly, with the learned efficiency of a skilled hunter. Further in my heart and mind I know the truth and make no apologies for my actions or my place and time. Others around me may opt to eat only plants, nuts and fruits still others may employ faceless strangers to procure there meats, their leather, their feathers and all of the niceties and necessities of life such is their right, of course, and I wish them well. All I ask in return is no one begrudge me and all of us that answer the primordial stirring within our hunters souls, my right to do some of these things myself." - M. R. James Do any of you have any great ones that you keep around.

    New Sting and Sites

Only changed strings a half dozen times but I was told shoot at least a hundred arrows through and then check the timing on the cams. Strings have steadily gotten better and don't seam to stretch as much these days. For the sight tape, I would recommend you dial your sliding pin in dead nuts at the near range and make a tiny reference mark at the tip of the range pin. (you can use a pencil but I scratch a tiny line with a sharp knife because it is more precise for me) Then slowly walk it out to the furthest distance you can hold a group at. Once you are solid at the far distance make another reference mark where the tip of the range pin is now. The farther the distance between these two sight in yardages the more accurate your first selection of a sight tape will be. You will now try to match up one of the sight tapes with the precise marks you made earlier. One should match perfectly. When you install the tape, take extra care to make sure the hash marks are placed over the appropriate reference marks made earlier. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

    Outdoor Quotes

“One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted… if one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job.” -Jose Ortega y Gasset “Don't tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.” -Mark Twain “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.” - Aldo Leopold
