  1. Slip 2000 carbon killer works great on powder fouling. For getting rid of copper fouling I like Bore-tech Eliminator or the Bore-tech copper solvent. I follow up the cleaning the bore with a couple of wet patches of carb cleaner and a few dry patches. Follow up with a good penetrating oil like Kroil.

    6.5x55 Swede or .280 remington

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to go with the 6.5x55. I figure with a 5.5 lb gun, the lighter recoil will be a benefit. It'll also be a good rifle for my kids to use as they get older. I already have a 300 weatherby and 30-06 if I want to reach out further or shoot something bigger than deer or cows. Also decided on a rifle...it'll be a Forbes model 24B, stainless.

    Plain Jane Bullets

If your rifle can shoot them accurately and you have matched the bulletin weight and caliber with the game you're hunting, those gamekings and interlocks will do the job. I loaded up some SGK for my buddy's plains game hunt in Africa and the only one out of seven animals had to be shot twice (that was because of a bad shot). Last year my son shot a cow elk with a 165 gr accubond. First shot in the shoulder just blew up and fragmented everywhere (165gr from 30-06 @ 300 yds) Had to hit it again. I use whatever shoots accurately, and what's available. Components have been scarce for a while.

    brass and major speed issues

Seems like this a common problem with this particular round. I have seen people with similar experiences post on other forums. Any time you change brass, reduce the load and work up again.

    165gr sst hornady

Try the optimal charge weight method. It's a very efficient way to work up loads. Simple instructions, just takes a little more time at the range....which isn't such a bad thing. Just google it , the one you want is developed by Dan Newberry.
  6. Looking for some input on any experiences with either caliber. Looking to get a mountain rifle in one of these calibers. I reload exclusively and will probably designate the rifle for deer-sized game and cow elk. Rifle will have a 24" barrel. What kind of velocity can expect with a 140 gr bullet from the 6.5? Seems like most of the info I see is for longer barrels. Thanks
  7. I just had a muzzle brake installed on my 300 Weatherby so I'd thought I'd share the info in case anyone is looking for one. I purchased a "V-port vaporizer" (mine is the tapered model) from straight shot gunsmithing (http://www.straightshotgunsmithing.com/page14) and I am quite impressed with the performance. I like the side-only port design and it was one of the few of this type that could be tapered or turned down to fit a normal sporter-type barrel. My rifle is a vanguard back country (a fairly light rifle) and it used to scramble my noggin pretty good. I wasn't able to follow the impact of my shots because of the muzzle rise and now it feels like I'm shooting a .243. Virtually no muzzle rise and the recoil is nothing. If I knew how to post a video, you could see for yourselves. Cost is about $100 and any good gunsmith should be able install it for you for $100-$150. I haven't had the chance to see how this has affected the accuracy but I will be making a trip to the range very soon.

Who has the best steak in town?

Pinnacle Peak and Daisy May's in Tucson. Fogo de Chao in Scottsdale is amazing. I got the meat-sweats trying to get one of everything there.
