  1. I have never owned a Tacoma but have owned 4 pre 94 4x4 Toyotas trucks and 1 4 runner. You can't beat em.

Gotta brag a bit on the latest  one I scored 2 months ago. Once in life deal 1990 4x4 extended cab, 5spd,AC power windows and locks. Never off road always in AZ. 122K one owner miles. All receipts since new , original window sticker. Perfect in every way

It is like I went back in time to 90 and bought a new truck. Paid 7K for it. Ill keep it the rest of my  days. Life is good. Now I need a sheep tag

Google and learn the gutless method, boned out quarters and get a good pack frame.  Anyone who spent 8 hours dragging an elk is not someone you should take hunting advice from.  If you have the November hunt it will be cool enough to hang the quarters and you’ll have time to get them out.  If not, be careful you don’t shoot one too far in or have lots of friends.

    Excellent advice!

I one saw 2 guys dragging a cow behind their quad on FS 29. They had no even gutted it. Complete butt hats and disrespect for the animal

  3. Sweet pic, I have a video I took on my daughters Jr elk hunt last October that I am saving for the picture/video contest that Amanda does every year that is awesome. 4 bears, one sow and three cubs of which one was a brownee. They were 56 feet from us and jumped into a pond and swam across the thing twice.

Dude that video is a winner for sure!! Now I know who AZelkhunter is. I have seen 2 bears on that tank in the last 10 days.

You draw any tags this year?

  4. late archery started in 22n 1992. 50 tags first years bull only. I drew first year and killed a spike. Not sure when they aded cow tags but it was not long after they bull hunt started I would always put in bull first cow second . Drew one or the other almost every year until 08 when I started putting in for the early archery 22 tag. I drew early archery in 2016 and did not kill but had one of my greatest hunts ever chasing bulls and only saw 2 other hunters. Killed 3 cows and a 370 toad bull in the late archery. Sitting water, salt or a hot game trail. Most hunters bail after the first week as they do not realize how difficult the hunt is. Good luck to you

  5. I had a friend back in Montana who got his 243 as a young man when the cartridge first appeared on the market. He lived on his family ranch down by Lima and he worked for his family guide/outfitting business.

He filled his elk tag every year for 30 years until he quit hunting (He hates ATVs and some of the lousy hunting practices/hunters that he saw manifest after sorry lazy pukes now can get into back country on an ATV, but I digress.)

Anyways. the point is, he said a good hunter can get close enough to make a 243 effective. He claims every elk killed was killed with the exact same neck shot and every shot was under 70 yards. Alot of folk question the ethics of neck shots, but he never wounded one, never lost one and never failed to fill his tag. By the way, all those elk were larger than average bulls.

Having hunted for many years and seen what your buddy in Montana saw from his early days of hunting I feel his pain. We all see these lousy hunting practices as the woods get more crowded every year.

243 will drop an elk no problem. Good luck to your grandson and have a great time in woods with him. Always special time hunting with kids

  6. Just noticed there is a lost and found on the site. I would have posted sooner and i know this is a long shot.

I live right below Roberts Mesa in Unit 22. In early October 2117 I was busting through shoulder high manzanita on Roberts with a small day pack. The strap from My 8X42 meopta binos must have

hooked on a branch and got yanked out of my pack. Did not notice until I was at the nest glass spot.Felt like a complete dumb butt. I have looked several times with no luck. All of that shoulder hi manzi looks the same and it is difficult to follow the same route through it more than once. Perhaps some one found the binos during one of the December bull hunts. If any one has found them or they turn up in the future I will gladly pay a reward as the binos were fairly new.

  7. I live North of Payson and don't often travel to the Valley. But I am thinking about driving down to attend this so I can listen in to the BS that gets spouted.

Does any one know if there is a petition that can be signed that is in opposition to the AZ for wild life campaign bill? I would certainly sign it as i am sure many members on the forum would.

Perhaps some of the members of this forum would like to plan an event where food is served, donations given and whatever type of petition is needed would be there to sign if you so desire.

I fear there are not many years left to hunt lions and bobcats the way things are going.

  8. I will certainly try out this tasty sounding recipe with my recent kill as this bear is the BEST tasting I have ever taken.

Hunted 16 days this season. Mostly with dogs but also sitting tanks, glassing and calling. Astounding amount of bears in my area, 22 and 23, this year due to strong acorn crop .Treed 11 bears, glassed 2 and saw 7 come in to water while sitting tanks. All of the bears on tanks were sows with cubs so no kill but heaps of fun watching. Killed a 4 to 5 year old sow last day of hunt. When skinning her out she was loaded with fat and in prime condition. Using all 4 quarters to make ground, sausage and chorizo. Kept the back straps and loins to grill. Also one rack of ribs to put in the smoker.

Helped a buddy whose wife had a cow tag pack out her kill Sunday. Monday night we had the celebratory elk loin, backstop spuds wine and roasted peppers feast all cooked over mesquite coals. Along with bear t loin for appetizer.

NOW for the point of this post. The bear t loin was incredible. Cooked through just past medium it was tender juicy and not gamey in the least. All present who sampled agreed it was almost as good as the medium rare elk. And as we hunters know medium rare elk loin be some dang tasty fare.

  9. I would really be curious to find out if all these camps they give broke into our by other Hunters or local meth heads that know it's hunting season. I would assume the latter but God only knows!

You have nailed it. This is not hunters but shoot bag meth heads who have found out during hunting season to cruise around and look for easy pickings .

Need to bait them and sit back in the trees with a ball bat. Knock a few more teeth out and bust a knee or 2

I rarely post but I check in often. After all of the various comments the past week I have to say a few things.Yep it is hard to draw a premium elk tag with out a shoot ton of Bone butt points. But it can be done. While I have never drawn a premium tag Im building points in hopes of drawing some day. I now have 11. I don't trust G&F on line draw so I put in the old fashioned way with a check . I still don't know if I drew this year but fingers are crossed and if I don't then I will be out in the field helping other hunters who drew and enjoying the great outdoors and camaraderie .

With all of the hunters applying for elk it's a no brainer that you can't draw a great tag unless you luck out or have max points.IT IS A LOTTERY !! just like buying those dumb butt scratch cards at Giant. Only guess what? You have a much better chance of drawing a tag than ever winning any $$ by scratching those cards. No one cries about not winning $$ as they continue to scratch. Our system is what it is so quit bitching and just keep putting in until the magic day happens. We are lucky to have all of the different big game species to hunt on public land.

Or put in for a late Archery tag and hunt your butt off. From 92 till 05 I drew 4 Nov bull tags and 5 cow tags. Killed 4 cows and 2 bulls. The bull in the photo being one of them which I killed in 05. That was my last tag. The next year is when GF started the early archery hunt in 22 which is what I hope to draw eventually.

If you choose to hunt a Nov archery put in a bunch of time finding bulls then pattern them and see where they drink and where they hang. Or spot and stalk. And spend every day out there hunting hard. Big plus with those hunts is very few hunters are serious. They hunt a few days and find out bulls are not screaming and they go home so you don't run in to a bunch of dips that don't know what they are doing who just ride around in camo on their camo ATV with a bow in the rack, Or they hang out at the bar taping about the 375 bull they saw but could not find him again.

I hunted the bull pictured for THREE years before all things lined up and I was able to kill what I expect is the biggest bull I will ever harvest. The other years I was out there having a blast hunting!!

    Ok done with my rant

  12. Another draw...another buzz kill.

    10 elk points

    19 antelope.

Granted it is frustrating but I was fortunate to get drawn for 12 years straight November archery 22. Killed 3 cows and 3 bulls and had a blast when my tags were not filled. Last bull killed was a 369 taken with my long bow.

If you have less than 3 points consider the November archery hunts. Tough but you can be successful if you put in the time.

With 10 elk points I will hold out till I get an early archery 22 or 23 tag.

Good luck to every one next year.

  13. If you would like to view the cabin go to VRBO.com #470922. The cabin just rented for the 11/29 to 12/5 hunt . The 12/6 to 12/12 hunt is open. Even if you stay else where I am happy to help in any way I can. Bulls are very active now and not a single early archery hunter to be seen. I would love to have a tag for the current hunt. For now I am content to be out with my camera.
