My son Zach killed a nice bull on Saturday after football practice. Hit the field around 3:30. It was super warm.....93. Didnt glass an oryx until 6:00 PM. Once we saw the first one they were popping up everywhere. He passed on 2 sub adults and a cow with a brownie. The cow was very thin in the hips due to nursing Im assuming. Would have been a 435 yard shot so we decided to pass for a number of reasons. She was with 2 other broken horn animals. Glassed up a beautiful 4x4 mulie in velvet. Around 7:00 we glasssed 2 bulls. Zach decided to go after them and made a nice 130 yard shot on this animal. The other bull had a sway horn but still big bodied. Really happy for him. Spent the weekend butchering and packaging the meat. Had the tender loins last night with some wild rice. LIKE BUTTER!!!!!!! Its his senior year and man has it started out great for him. He has a tag for NM coues in November in the burros. cant wait!! Good luck to everyone on their hunts. Jake

Good morning. Rumors are that it should be a great season to pick Pinons. I've only done it while elk hunting in the past and since I don't have a tag AGAIN!!!!!!.....thought it would be cool to get in the high country this way. My question is...is there some sort of network or current info on areas to go? Im in Southern NM close to Unit 34 and the Gila. Would make for a fun weekend with the family I think. Good luck to you all on draws. I'm waiting for my first coues tag in Arizona in 25 years:) Jake

I've been teaching and coaching for 26 years. Late assignment????tough sh%t. You don't get your block......we lose yards. Game and fish needs to grow a pair. There was no problem, just lazy unorganized people who we have to cader to every day. IMHO

Heres a question cfoming from an out of stater. Is it impossible for me to draw a late dec coues tag with no points?

My dad was the first person to introduce me to hunting. Had some great times with him. Still makes it out for a duck hunt every year. I can remember what an incredible shot he was. Dropping dove like nobodies business. I had a family friend when I was 14 introduce me to bowhunting. Its one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I still hunt with a recurve. That first hunt was for javelina. We walked up from the base of redington pass . The sky was overcast and the streams were actually running. The smells and the freedom of being out with the chance at slinging an arrow was incredible. To this day javelina are my favorite animal to bowhunt....even over elk. Its those early experiences that keep me there. Really great memories and I cant thank them enough for giving me those opportunities. I hope my son will feel the same way one day.
