I was lucky enough to draw a rifle antelope hunt in 19A. Does anybody have experience in this unit for lopes? any information is welcomed, thanks.
  2. I'm looking to buy a new custom built rifle. I want it to have all the good features such as free floating barrel, glass embedding, light trigger pull, good looks, light weight and extreme accuracy. Which brand is the best in your opinions? kimber? sako? tikka? any others? thanks

    best custom built rifle

thanks for all the info and links. i was impressed with Hill Country Rifles, it seems like they do good work at reasonable prices. I got two more questions though...first i love the look of wood stocks but it seems that most custom rifles are built on synthetic stocks. Wood stocks are prone to warp so accuracy could decline if exposed to extreme weather but synthetic stocks would stay accurate longer. Am I right in this thinking? Lastly, i want a rifle that i can shoot a lot and be accurate with out to 500 yards for deer size game. I'm thinking .243, for its low recoil and price of ammo?? any thoughts, thanks.
  4. I hunt down in southern arizona and have never deer hunted this late into Jan. I'm thinking of driving down for the weekend to hunt but was wondering if the deer will still be rutting good. What has your past experiences been the last weekend of Jan?

Unit 35A and My first Coues...

Grizzly, I was only slightly higher than the deer. It was not enough to make a difference.

Unit 35A and My first Coues...

Hi HillBilly_Al, I'm the 'kid' you were talking about in your story driving the red jimmy. That's cool that my mistake turned into your first coues kill! I had no idea that I hit him in the jaw. I know only my first shot connected. I spotted him bedded under a tree trying to get out of the wind. When I climbed the opposite hill and laid down to shoot I noticed that he kept looking back towards his tail. When I shot the bullet must have clipped his jaw and then grazed his back. Did the angle add up? I was slightly higher then he was. When I read the story I was thankful that deer was harvested but knowing where I missed pissed me off . I was content thinking that I only clipped the bottom of him. 311 yards and with the wind gusting through the canyon I figured I would hold on the lower left part of his head (since you was looking back and down) and the drop and wind would blow the bullet into the vitals. What the heck? My bullet (30.06 - 150 grain sited in at 200) didn't drop much at all...if I would have held on him it would have been a good shot. I'm slowly learning that time spent scouting is better spent out on the range shooting in real situations. Anyway, congrats on your deer. In the story you made it out to be small but it is a good solid 3x3 that any hunter would take!
  7. I'm trying to decided what broadhead to use this year for a deer hunt in December and a javelina hunt January. Last year I used steelhead 3-blade and shot a javelina from 40 yards with a complete pass through. When I retrieved my arrow I found that one of the blades had broken off. A couple of weeks later I shot a coues deer from 60 yards with a complete pass through. Once again when I retrieved my arrow one of the blades had broken off. My question is should I continue to use steelheads? Or should I look into a mech broadhead with stronger blades?
