Upcoming Hunter's Education Campout Weekend
208muley replied to rossislider's topic in Youth Hunters
Highly recommend this class! Two of my kids got their HE at this class. Scott, Woody, and Dewanne and everyone else put on an excellent class!! Sign up soon cause this class fills fast! -
I could never decide so I just got all of them, 10s, 15s, 30s, and a spotter. 15s are my most used set of glass I have, couldnt imagine hunting without them.

Water is always the wild card in AZ. If it is dry I will usually start with 3L of water for the hike into our usual spots about 7 miles in. If the spring that is there ever goes dry holy crap that would suck!!! But my pack weighs 32-35lbs not including the clothes I'm wearing and the weapon (gun or bow). To the OP, you will hear comments from gear junkies and from those that go old school and everywhere in between. Just get out there and do short easy trips and go from there. Doesn't matter if you become a gear junkie or go old school or somewhere in between, just enjoy what your doing at whatever level and you will be rewarded with amazing stories and memories that few people get to experience with or without a kill, and that's all that matters. I do a backpack hunt for javelina every jan. absolute Funnest hunt I do. People give me all kinds of crap for working that hard for a pig. And maybe from their perspective it doesn't make sense but I get to hunt pigs that have never seen or smelled a person and I don't see anyone and it isn't really about the pig kill anyways, it's about the experience!!

One thing I have started taking with me is a plb like a spot or a delorme Inreach. If you have a family then you owe it to them to have one. If you break your leg or worse and no one knows where you are you may stay out there till you become dirt. It is good insurance. My wife is much happier now and it nice to know if something bad happens I'm still getting out. For you guys that do backpack hunt how much does your pack weigh for a 7 day trip during oct/nov time frame?

Thats how some animals in pest control are "relocated". Some guys will drive them across the river, and some guys will send them to see Jesus. I may be wrong but I don't think cats go to Jesus.... I think they go southward.... Lol

Game and fish will have all the landowner info you need
-
Here are some ingredients to deal with problem cats... One 55 gallon drum full of water, one cage trap that will fit in the 55 gal drum...... Catch cat in trap...... Cats don't like water...... Problem solved quietly......

Find your price point point for the bow only. Go shoot em all in that range with your eyes closed. The one that feels the best is the one you buy. Almost every bow made nowadays can shoot better than most people can. If it feels good from draw cycle thru the shot you will shoot more and that is where accuracy comes from. Good luck!

I love "backcountry" hunting. It's a lot of work and game numbers tend to be much less as there is less water, no roads no dirt tank or trick tanks. Do you need all the high priced gear? Probably not, but I will say that having top quality gear that is made for the backpacker is lighter (easier to carry) and in some ways could be a lifesaver. Because backpack hunting for 5-7 days is a grueling adventure anything to can do to maker it more comfortable on yourself is worth the price of admission. That is just my opinion. With that said, do I have $350 pants? Nope I use $60 Eddie Bauer "guide" pants... $60. I did spend some money on a down puffy jacket, super light and super warm and compresses down to a softball. Don't skimp on boots!! Try them all to find one that fits YOUR foot. Packs??? Good lord a book can be written on this subject. It's a personal thing, internal vs external frames, type of bags from one big sack to lots of pockets and the ability to haul your gear AND boned out meat. On and on and on..... For a guy starting out without a real mentor I would try a 1-2 nighter not far from a road and take what gear you have. Bring a note pad to write down your thoughts as the trip goes on to refine your gear once you get back. One last thing, body condition is everything!! While round is a shape, it's not the shape you want when you are 15 mi in 5 days into a hunt!! Legs, feet and lungs!!!!!!! Any questions you have just ask, while I darn sure don't know it all, I do have some experience backpack hunting and am more than willing to at least give you my opinion. There are people that hate it and those that love it! Start with small trips to see which one you are to find out if you want/need to spend the cash on it.

Great to see SC giving up some bass and crappie... I wish it would fill like the old days... such a great lake to fish...

208muley replied to KingJeff187's topic in Elk Hunting
I've said it for years, elk bring out the worst in people! Doesn't matter if it's online, in the woods or even in jr camps( yes I have witnessed egos and attitudes on jr cow hunts). Everybody is a bada$$ and everything is a secret. It's the number one reason I quit guiding. Sheep hunters tend to be great, Coues hunters, while secretive about spots, tend to help quite a bit. But mention anything about elk and you might as well put on gloves and invent new names to call each other. -
I'm going down next wknd. Probably gonna fish. I just go out on a ponga with a cooler full of beer at catch triggers bass etc. I like going for big fish but it seems like when I go to rocky point I get a real bad case of the "I don't give a s**ts " and I'm just looking to kick it and relax. Swing by the marina or drive out by JJs and you can find a local to take you out for the close stuff. If bigger fish and more serious is your thing just go to JJs and the guys that work there. They know who the good guys are.

If the bull i want is close I do nothing. Odds are that after he/she spooks it will run straight to the one I want and take it with them. Roll the dice and pray they slip by you without you getting busted.

I'm thinking about the OTC turkey hunt this year as well. The hunt is a bit tougher the later it gets but if you can get one to gobble you can usually get a shot at him. The hen are usually on nests by the OTC hunt so the toms are lonely. If you have a roost or a known strutting area set up a blind and a decoy or two and call every 20 min or so and wait. If you don't have the intell on those get your hiking shoes on and walk two tracks and tops of ridges calling as you move along. Vary the calling from soft to loud, short duration to long duration till you get a response. Late season some years ago I was just cruising thru the woods calling 4-5 notes at a time when I heard a hen calling like crazy, maybe in response to me idk, and a Tom sounded off and headed her direction ( the Tom was closer to me than her but didn't respond to me). Talking a play from her play book I started calling non stop for quite a while, not long after I heard her yelp a few times and It was close. I stayed on the call and about 5 min later the hen and the Tom were inside 20 yards and the Tom went home with me. Late season can be tough and you can log a lot of miles but if you can get a little lucky it can be very rewarding. Good luck out there.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ cool move thinking about the resource before yourself, bravo!!!!!!!!

It's not just no fly for 48 hrs before YOUR hunt but no fly 48 before ANY big game hunt.

Check out youth outdoors unlimited website for their weekend campout hunter education class. It's usually in July up near happy jack. Best jr class out there! Everything is done in two days, outside and done by a great group of guys. Heck they even feed you! Both my kids did it thru them.

Poachers are trash... Glad the fines were high and there was jail time. Taking away a license and make em take classes means nothing. Poachers don't need a license or a class to shoot stuff, illegal is their thing.
-
I've always wanted to e put live hedgehog type cactus in a display. The locations that they would be planted in would be sealed so roots and water can't get out. Water occasionally with ice cubes so it leaches slow. Kinda cool to see it bloom depending on time of year.

Wouldn't trade for 99% of elk tags but I would trade in a second for almost any mexicana sheep tag!
-
Ocotillo. Dead or alive it pretty much looks the same unless it got its leaves on
-
I got mine from the safe outlet. Guy lives right across the street from me. Worth a look...
-
Roost shooters= slob hunters. hardest part of the hunt is waking up. Should be illegal to shoot something that won't move when you are under the tree in the predawn grey light.. Go buy a dang turkey from the store or go kill your own at a turkey farm.

good luck on that slam. The Osceola is the most enjoyable and the most difficult of all the subspecies to hunt, IMHO. My buddy just got back from his osceola hunt. Two birds in 3 days. Said there were tons of birds. He booked next year just cause he had such a good time! Just looking forward to my sons jr hunt up in 1 in a couple weeks! Always a good time and never had a problem getting into birds!
