Tommy, Better to find out now than later. Presently I have a 12 month old Walker pup that will be joining "the help" outside in the kennel as soon as the weather gets better. I will probably be using the power of Tri-Tronics to teach him where the mute button is on his volume. If you want a dog to pal around with your boy you might want to look into bird dogs that have been bred to hunt for the owner instead of hounds that hunt for themselves. I also have a Camus cur that I use for cat and bear and soon will be getting a Leopard cur for the same. These cur breeds tend to be more of a "do all" dog and are easier to handle than hounds. Good luck, --Bill

My 2007/2008 Coues deer hunts
WFGinNM replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Too bad about the Burro buck. Mexico ought to be a blast, can't wait for the update. Have fun, --Bill -
I live up in the Jemez mts. both in and just outside of Los Alamos. It's a 7+ hour drive down to the coues but I love it. Lucky for me I have a friend in Magdalena so I can break the trip in half with a stop there. Scotty, you are a bit more that a little drive to the coues. But you are a world traveler, keep up the awesome pictures. --Bill

primetime, I'm going up in less than 2 weeks to hunt Kodiak Island out of Akhiok with Alaska Coastal Marine. I hope to have a bunch of pics to post when I get back. --Bill

I thought I'd be alright but, I really thought it would be easier to not put in for coues this year since I'll be hunting blacktails on Kodiak during the November deer hunts. I've even been avoiding this site (no offense Amanda) so I wouldn't think about coues so much. Well... it's no use I really need a coues fix. Hate to wish life away but come on 2008. --Bill

Gila Wilderness Hunting

I plan on giving Tommy a call next time I draw coues, 7 hours one way is a bit far to do too many scouting trips. If for no other reason to buy him a cup of coffee or beverage of his choice for giving me some pointers last year. Thanks, --Bill -
Come on now... There aren't any elk on the Valle. --Bill

I live here in 6c I'll send you a pm... --Bill

I don't want to pirate this thread but the talk of hunter's needing to band together made me think of this thread I read on another site, http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showth...ighlight=loaded (I hope it works). If it doesn't work it's about hunting with one in the chamber or not. Not really a similar topic to using salt or not but a ethic situation asking if hunter's should hunt with a round in the chamber or not. Like Ultramag states "camo clothing is next followed be sights on bows and you can not leave camp with a full can of chew you'll be out in the field to long and no water bottle." when will the non-huntuing biologists decide that we cannot carry a firearm in the field with a round in the chamber? Just might not be safe. --Bill

Hope this helps... General Rules pg. 10: "It is unlawful to possess the head, horns or antlers of all big game species found in the field (except for obviously shed antlers) without a reciept from the Department of Game and Fish." --Bill

Anybody here use Steiner Predators? I was wonder if anyone has any pro's and con's. I didn't see them offered at Camerland, and wonder why there was not much when I did a search. Thanks, --Bill
-
Thanks guys, I'd love some Swaro's but I think the weight and power of the 12X50's would suit me alright. Now to go sell some antlers to pay for them. --Bill

My 2006 Archery Coues hunt
WFGinNM replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Jamaro, Up here in the Jemez that particular problem is known as anal glaucoma. I personally get a reacurring condition I've come to know as hunter virus. It can be treated with a long walk in the fresh air with my dogs looking for a cat track. --Bill -

Sounds like you are having a blast Tommy. Before I hunted eastern whitetails in PA I never thought I could sit in a tree stand. Now I really look forward to hunting whitetail during the rut. Are you hearing any grunting? Can't wait to read more and see some pictures. --Bill -
I've heard some goods things about them. I plan on getting one for my trip to Kodiak next year. --Bill

I've been trying to figure out exactly how much an AZ hunt cost would be just for the license and tag for a non-resident. I guess living in NM has put a drain on my ability to understand other states hunting regulations. Any way one of you patient folks could give me a breakdown of what it would cost including the non-resident license, and then the coues tag? Also are there any hidden cost like New Mexico's habitat stamp, habitat and access validation, ect? I've stretched the bank account pretty tight with a trip to Kodiak next November and will miss the NM rifle hunts. So I was wondering if it would be feasible to try my luck with the AZ Oct. hunts. Can't get coues off the brain. Thanks, --Bill
