Archery success rates on coues, and how many mature bucks are found.
-
I think both our questions go hand in hand
-
What do you guys think archery success is on coues across the board?I’ve always figured 2-3% is probably not far off
-
Yes! And Utah for whatever reason. Also a lot of glassing from a road (usually paved) with binos not on a tripod,(or they glass an area for about 10 minutes before moving on) and they tend to be decked out head to toe in matching designer camo, same as their friends. I even had a 3 kuiu wearing Californians huff and puff their way up a ridge obviously following me(I stopped and talked to them as we drove opposite directions, told them what trail I was heading up, and even told them about a different trail up the road they should try. Instead they came back about 15 minutes later and followed me)I ducked off the trail at the top and listened to them talk about how they wondered where I went and when they find me how they’re gonna “steal my spot”. They never found me and only glassed for me, never even looked for deer (they were openly talking about it) they even called it “operation coues area theif”. Then the douches gave up and headed down the hill. I don’t know if it was more funny or aggravating. Both I guess.

Granted, I’m sure the success rates are likely very very low for most non res hunters that come here.... especially some of the guys I talked to

Liscense plates from states not Arizona, and talking to some of them. Multiple have told me that they were turned onto coming here by tv/podcasts etc because it’s otc and there’s not much else out there In January, especially compared to hunting coues in relatively amazing weather. From what I’ve seen it has become a problem here in southern az, and I feel it’s unfair to residents. There’s a reason you can’t buy premium otc tags virtually anywhere else especially as a non res
-
The amount of out of state hunters that I’ve personally seen out there has absolutely skyrocketed in the last several years. No doubt about it. I’d say at a minimum 5 fold. That’s all the data I need.

Free for all otc nonres archery tags is a clearly defined problem
-
Worst idea of all time. On any topic. Obviously you’re not a resident bow hunter. nonres should be a draw though, that’s an idea I can get on board with

I have 2 boxes of Winchester deer season xp 6.5 creedmoor, 120 rounds of .223 , and a box of Underwood.44 mag +p+ Hard cast lead.... Looking to trade for some hornady precision hunter in 6.5 creedmoor of anyone is interested. I’m in Tucson. Thanks

Only problem I see with above explanations is that after the bonus pass draw, the next phase is the 1/2 random draw, where if your lottery number is selected, they look at your number 1&2 choices and issue a tag if available, then move on to next app. Then the next phase is the same but for choices 3/4/5. There’s no draw for first choice, then a draw for 2nd choice etc. also if you have 4 points, you should enter 4 points to see your odds, don’t add one for this year

Anyone else get charged, but it’s still not showing up on the portal?

My brother shot a little pig one time that had teeth like that. I always assumed they were baby teeth, but I don’t know for a fact.

I have one just like it, made in 1966. Smoothest and most natural pointer I’ve ever shot -
If you’re in Tucson I’ll take them

Dramatically less active rut this year where I’ve been. Borderline no rut activity. I killed my buck on the 8th I believe, and haven’t been out a ton since. But my brother has and hasn’t seen much either.

Desert Bowhunting without the illegals
dustin25 replied to JimmyHat's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Short answer is no, all border units in Arizona have issues with illegals. -
Awesome man congrats! I’ve been waiting for this post from ya! I’ve got some coues with my bow, but with a recurve is something special. Hopefully I’ll be as cool as you next January! Great job

Not even the same category, one I don’t like to because I don’t wanna be overrun with nonresidents, the other is just flat out wrong and unethical. More power to the guys that wounded the buck, if I knew someone was deliberately keeping info like that from me it’d get ugly real quick.
-
Killing a buck wounded by another hunter is a non issue in my opinion. if the guides knew where a wounded buck was and intentionally didn’t help them in hopes of getting their client on it, that’s about as shady and unethical as it gets.

What hunts are those

Good news! For those size optics, there’s no reason to spend more then $3-400 MAX for a great tripod/head combo. Get some legs like pro master xc325c (or 525c) or slik 634(or similar models with slightly different specs), and top is with something like a benro s2, Sirui va-5, or pro master sphc20 head. any combination of the above will give you a more then capable, lightweight set up with a solid pan head that you can stand behind unless you’re very tall. I use a pro master xc325c topped with a benro s2 with outdoorsmans bino adapter and I’m in it for about $350 total. Also I’m 6’3” and can stand and glass, for your reference. take the money you save and buy that little spotter!
