lonely pop-trailers on National Forest land
Snapshot replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
It does not make a difference to me. What someone does with their trailer/tent is their business and not mine. -
cruisin, cruisin, cruisin on the river

Great pics. Sounds like a great time, and a nice river to canoe on. -

No matter how bad I wanted a spot, I would never leave my trailer sitting around because of all the thieves and vandals that seem so numerous these days. -

What I have seen in the past is guys bring their trailers and set them up early to "stake their claim" to spots they like. some even do it weeks ahead of time, especially in areas of limited camp spots or access. I think you are allowed to camp for 14 days before you have to move, but I am not sure if it applies to unattended campers, you would think it would? I wonder what stance the FS takes on this? -
Digiscoping is a pretty neat deal. I would like to do it out in the field, I just have second thoughts, as my daypack is already overloaded and gets to be a real burden at the end of the day How much do you think your setup weighs? Just curious.

The scale has been sold.

Good points on those GPS. I have been looking into the Garmin Colorado also. I have an old Garmin 40 and it is o.k but am looking to upgrade with all the topo features. I

That works the best, either a blow dryer or heat gun. Just be careful on carbon arrows, blow the heat into the end and not the sides if possible.

I certainly don't think the use of radios is unethical, like I mentioned earlier, radios are a great tool. Maybe this thread has lost a little in translation to the fact that it was started because of the implication that some hunters only score big animals by the use of radio communication???. There is a big difference between a couple of buddies with radios versus a whole army of guys using radios. My Dad and I both had radios so that I could keep track of him, but since he passed away, I no longer use them because I hunt by myself 99.99% of the time, even though I carry one for emergency use. I think maybe Redbeard's point is that technology has bred lazy hunters in a sense that maybe some of their actions maybe construed as unethical in the sense of "the purity" of hunting in general. Trail cams, laser range finders, radios, gps, foodplots, feeders, salt licks and all the other gadgets that take make it easier to bag game. Are these things illegal or unethical? Certainly not as long as they are used within the boundaries of the law. If I hire an outfitter and a crew of 20 guys with radios and gps to search the hunt unit from top to bottom and radio back to me the location of that trophy buck or bull, is that illegal or unethical? Cetainly not illegal (unless state laws prevail), but ethics are up to the individual as what they perceive as being right or wrong. In 2006 I helped out my wife's uncle and cousin on a hunt in 35B. They are kind of lazy when it comes to hunting, so I stayed on the mountain too glass until dark. I spotted two decent bucks across a deep canyon, I radioed back to them that I found something and to come take a look. The next morning we hiked across the canyon and he shot one of those bucks. Does that make me or anyone else that does stuff like that "unethical" ? We still had to work very hard to get that deer. Could Randy Ulmer have taken that deer without radios? I am sure he could. If he doesn't care about putting it in the record book then it shows that he hunts for more than just an entry into a book, and that he just wants to get the biggest animal he can each and every year, and to me that says he is just competing with himself and thats what it is all about.

Thats funny I admit I am a little "old school" at times, I think a loin cloth and a spear would take me back to my roots.

Radios are a great tool for communicating with a hunting buddy or spotter so to speak, and can be very valuable in emergency situations. I just think the high profile hunts get out of hand with too much "electronic aid"

First and foremost, Randy Ulmer is an exceptional archer and bowhunter. The whole two way radio deal is something that has been escalated by some of the guides and outfitters. Look at some of these outfitters that have 20 guys with two way radios blanketing the countryside in search of record book animals, as soon as one is found they home in on it like an elite army unit with a high tech communication center and Bam!, the lucky hunter gets his trophy. This method of hunting, boys and girls, is not representative to the true spirit of hunting and being an outdoorsman. Some of these high dollar clients couldn't find there way around a Walmart parking lot let alone find their own "book" animal. But thats what guides and outfitters are paid to do. As far as Ulmer is concerned, is it about ego? Who Knows. I have heard he is an exceptionally nice person. If I shot a record book animal would I enter it into the books? heck yes! But I don't hunt to get my name in the books. We each hunt for our own reasons and to each his own. Some guys get so caught up in "antler score" that they have to get something bigger and better each year in order to satisfy themselves, and that is fine as long as they don't forget to see the tree's through the forest, and not turn down the wrong path like Kirt Darner or some of the other obsessive knuckleheads that have ruined there fame by too much ego.

Its pretty hard to pass on a buck during bow season. I live by the philosophy, if you have to think about the size of the animal your drawing on, then its best not to shoot. A 160" buck is still a very nice one these days.

Klondyke Butte.?

I was just looking around at the Docter 40 x 80mm = $3600.00, wonder if the Swaro's will be comparible?

Thanks Lark. I hunt in upper Eagle Creek valley but not that far north. Sometimes we stop at Honeymoon and do alittle flyfishing, but you are right about the fires and ash, if enough if it washes down it will kill the fish. I am going to be up there in a couple weeks for some scouting and a little R&R. I will check it out.
