more on Calif. condor issue
Snapshot replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I have never hunted the Kaibab, but I fish at Lee's Ferry every year. It is a beautiful thing to see them soaring on the thermals in the canyon. -
I spend most of my time in the Northern half of the unit, but we did get some serious rain the last couple days in the Santa Rita's and a dusting of snow on the peaks.

My 2007/2008 Coues deer hunts
Snapshot replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Sounds like your going to have a blast! I wish I could hunt for a month. Good Luck! -
I think deer numbers are struggling in unit 1 as well, and being a popular hunting destination for archery it got tagged as one of the potential archery draw hunts.?

It can be questionable that time of year. I watch the weather reports carefully. If it is too brutal, I will stay down here in Southern AZ and hunt. If there is a chance of heavy snow I won't go, cause it is remote and I don't want to get snowed in, especially pulling a travel trailer. But if the weather is good, that first week of January can be special, or you can just end up freezing the marbles.

I hope to experience sheep hunting for myself someday, while I can still make it to the top of the mountain, gettin harder every year.

Man, I am going to have to do a better job sucking up next time to win that prize! -
Check the regs again, third line up from the bottom of the archery section. the unit 27 archery hunt is for January only. I believe they closed the december archery hunt in 27 to help take the pressure off of the rutting mule deer because of the dwindling population. I am going up to 27 to hunt in January. Januanry 1st- 31 16A, 27, 45A, 45B, 45C any antlered deer

Realization of how lucky we are all.

Physical ability is something we take for granted until we don't have it anymore, and when we see how it effects us and others it is an eye opener. I have been plagued by a chronic back problem and I am looking into surgery next year. I have always been the type of hunter who charges up the mountain, down the other side, and up and over three more mountains and back to camp in the dark. I just can't do that as much because of my condition, and being only 45 years old, I would like to enjoy the 20 years or so that I have left to hunt without being severely impaired. But in retrospect, my condition is nothing compared to other hunters/fisherman I have seen with severe impairments, and I am glad to see that they still try their best to do what they love! -
I have no experience with rattling, but I here it does not work on Coues like it does for eastern whitetail? Coues use a much bigger area than thier eastern cousins and you have to be in fairly close to get something to come in, even out of curiosity?

Duane Adams Book? Picture for your time
Snapshot replied to 300 ultra mag's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Duane and Tony's book is a good read and solid overall info on Coues hunting, it also contains a good overview on all the Coues hunting units that could help you decide what unit to hunt. -
I have only found one of those tortoises in all my years, but they are neat creatures. Some years ago during a November hunt I was clawing my way up the side of a bluffy mountainside in unit 27 and came face to face with a large king snake which scared the crap out of me at close range, I am suprised I didn't tumble back down the mountain, sure glad it was not a rattler, it was probably only 60 degrees out.

Here is a simple to make and popular crock pot stew. Ingredients: 2 pounds of finely cubed deer or elk meat (3/4" size pieces) 3 stalks of chopped celery 4 large chopped carrots 2-3 large diced potatoes 1 cup of barley (optional) 1 tablespoon of onion salt 1 tablespoon of seasoning salt 1 dash of garlic powder put all ingredients in the crock pot and add just enough water so that it does not completely cover the ingredients Set crock pot on low to simmer for 6-8 hours , stir occasionally. If a thicker stew mixture is desired you can add 3 cups of gravy and only 1 cup of water Ingredients and spices can be adjusted for size and taste. Enjoy! Brent Waage - AKA Snapshot

How far from roads? Picture for your time
Snapshot replied to 300 ultra mag's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Anywhere from a couple hundred yards to miles away. The biggest buck I saw last year (105") was 500 yards from the two track road I was riding my quad on, and I sat and glassed him for an hour. it was during the early archery season, I could not find him again during the late hunt. -
Take a can of spam and then add a little........... I will dig out a couple of my favorites and post them. When do you need them by?
