I don't know why you would even fuss about a dink like that anyway. I hope you do shoot him just to get him out of the gene pool!

I thought I heard Leupold optics are lifetime warranty regardless of how many owners but I could be wrong.

shortpants replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Hey Amanda, He left the part of that skit out where he hangs the buck up in a tree to skin it ! -
Did you kill last years buck in 24 a or b? He's got similar genetics of bucks I've seen up there.

Awesome video Jim! Hopefully we can add a couple of 150+'s to it this weekend. Maybe on the last day we'll shoot a couple of 110's for the sake of video. -
whats this years buck forecast

I have never felt more unprepared for a hunt in all my life. Guiding elk hunts took up all my scouting time. I made one trip this last weekend but never got the chance to really glass because I was looking for a good place to pack into. When I tried to finally glass I was eatin alive by mosquitoes and did'nt get much glassing done. I'm also taking my new 300wsm. which I have not had the time to get really comfortable with yet. I'm confident out to 300yds. and when I get down there wednesday I'll see how I do out to 400yds. but for now will stick to 300yds. I just bought all new backpacking gear, tent, sleeping bag, etc. so I hope there's no problems there. Bottom line is I need you all to wish Coosefan and I a lot of luck cause we're going to need it! -
For elk I got the outdoor edge knife set so I don't have to stop and sharpen. A client of mine had this set last year and we used it, needless to say I was impressed but I have'nt got to use my set yet.(got skunked this year ) For deer I use a razorblade style gut hook and unzip them from rack to tail and then around the body halfway back for the mount. I then skin them with my Knives of Alaska set.(little capeing knife and the one that looks like a butter knife) If a saw is needed the $9.00 retractable Gerber from walmart is great. I do not gut elk but I usually gut deer to get the tenderloins out.

I don't know what's more impressive, the size of that deer or the size of your 7 year old! They both look bigger than one would expect. I think we would all like to know what kind of camera you used so we can make our deer look bigger!

Casey's first Scalies..
shortpants replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I had a covy of scalies take a year or 2 off my life sat. while scouting for coues. I dang near stepped on them while climbing up a ridge at 1st light before they exploded up into the air all at once. -
No they don't. It would be nice to see a stretched tandem version big enough for 2 utv's.
-
And the worst part is you can't even shoot them bastards.

What should my name be?
shortpants replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
You'll spend the rest of your life trying and wishing to remain the young hunter that you are. It won't happen but at least you could have the name. -

I knew you would'nt let us down Josh. You can tell it's a coues just by the size of the skull plate. Nice find, thanks for sharing.

I live by 2 rules in hunting, 1) there are no rules and 2) they are where you find them.

North and east facing slopes provide the most shade. Afternoon hunts are best spent looking into the sun even though it is hard to see. The last hour of the day when the sun drops behind the mountain is very productive. Mornings are best spent looking in the same direction (west) trying to catch the deer leaving the feeding areas and watching which way they go to bed. You just cant beat that 1st 30 min. of light glassing in the orange glow of the morning sun!

Great job Austin!
