My son Austin took this buck on December 29th just before the big cold spell, in unit 28. It is his first archery kill, he used a Mathews SoloCam Classic. Take a look at the antlers on this rascal. Maybe damaged in the velvet? They actually brought this buck into archery range away from his does by raking a tree. The deer were in the open about 120 yards out and the boys were as close as they could get, so Austin's friend Joey who was back about 20 yards behind Austin started raking a tree. Without hesitation the buck came straight in and Austin sent a rage broadhead through his vitals when the buck hung up at 79 yards. Near vertical hillside the buck died on. Now we're off tomorrow to decimate the local javelina herd. .

Just let me know when and y'all can stay here at the lodge...that is if the boys leave you any.

That was a good buck to pass on. I would have passed on him too. The hunt will get better in the next week or so. The later the better! Good luck!! -

Very nice Coues Cash! Welcome to the site. Is that a NM buck?

His name is Bill Cohoe.

It's an oil on canvas painting about 14x20 inches. It really does look awesome. I also have one by the same artist of my oldest son with his first javelina.

I just got my Coues deer back from Scottyboy. Man did he do a great job! I won a free mount from him in the contest last year and put him to work on my monster Coues deer. I couldn't be happier with his work and attention to detail! Thanks Scotty for a great mount and I hope to bring you another one this year!!

Great story...and what fun!! Gotta love that bear huntin'!! -
A child can take the course and have it count when he turns nine. That should give you plenty of time before the turkey hunts.
-
Very nice Tim congratulations and nice turkey dog! That's a blacktail rattler, we've killed a couple of those at the house this year.
-
Thanks Scotty and Brent you're welcome. I hope y'all bust a bigun!!!

You guys are gonna think I'm lying but we killed the bull pictured below in unit 27 this year. We had about 5 cows walk by us downwind at 40 yards that never knew we were there crouching in the ferns. The bull was behind them and got to 37 yards before my hunter busted him. I don't think the bull however ever made it completely downwind. We were using a cover scent and it worked like a charm.

I was born and have lived most of my life in unit 27. It's my unit of choice and where I do virtually all my hunting. I absolutely love unit 27. I was on the same elk hunt guiding a hunter who took a nice bull and I too am infatuated with chasing those bugling bulls in the high country every September. Congratulations on your bull and the wonderful memories you made pursuing elk in Arizona's high country! May you draw another tag very soon.

Lots of Mule deer around Timberon.

I got this bear on one of the Covert II cameras. I don't have any big bucks this year but haven't checked most the cameras this year. Bear Video

Advice for a first time hunter
ScottAdams replied to Buckfever's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I would glass the canyon good early in the morning at first light. If no bears are seen I would start calling. Calling constantly for at least 30 minutes. You stop calling they stop coming. I've called them in with fawn distress, jackrabbit distress and even baby domestic pig squeeling. They generally come out earlier in the evening but most of the time in my eperience they prefer to stay out of the sun and are generally always shaded. Good Luck!! -
Congratulations Vern!! Very nice antelope and archery kill, your persistance paid off, beautiful!!!!
