    Unit 27

I'm back in from the morning hunt. Didn't see a whole lot. It was really warm out. Didn't even freeze. I saw 8 does and 2 bucks. The bucks weren't anything to brag about. Chris, I didn't do any of that "bluff' stuff today, I was in a little gentler terrain. Dennis, I've been holding off going up there, hoping the people will thin out. Last year after Christmas it wasn't bad at all, we didn't run into anyone. Take out the camera and snap a few photos. Especially some through the binocs of them bucks you're passing up. Here's the largest buck I saw. He was a fer piece out there so the photo quality is not great, and he was shaded. I think he was a big 2. This is the hill he was on. He and another buck were following some does. The other buck was a little forky and the two locked up for a little sparing for a couple of minutes. I threw this photo in of my 30's with a little CWT.com advertising.

    Unit 27

Thank you AZP&Y! Thank you Rich! Thanks for being my #1 fan Ernesto! I'm glad you guys like my posts but not sure what the appeal really is. Anyway, I enjoy posting them and filling y'all in on my hunts. AZP&Y those clear pics come from one a them new fangled Leica Digilux 2 cameras. Takes great photos. Here's a couple more photos I thought you guys might like. I only took time to take two photos of the big buck. This is the second one and is a little fuzzy. It wasn't the cameras fault, I just didn't hold it still enough. I thought y'all might like this one, it shows the setup I had on this big buck, the bluff I shot from and where the bucks were. Enjoy guys. I'm off to a different area tomorrow. No telling what I'll find! Scott

    Scouting Pics

Went out this morning to look around for the last time before the hunts starts. Some of you will be pleased to hear that I did see some rutting activity. Nothing really serious but rutting nonetheless. I watched a little 2-point and a couple of does and a fawn feeding in the early morning. I then noticed a decent 80ish buck above them on the ridge practically running toward them. He met up with them and immediately started sparing with the smaller buck. Not too long after that he headed for the does and ran them just a little bit while doing the lip curl and then he went on his way. I won't be hunting opening weekend but will hit it hard on Monday until the end of the hunt. Scott

Doug, I don't know if I'm going to pack them or not this year. I'm really not prepared for it right now, but we'll see. Tracker, send me an email and I'll see if can hook you up. scotron@aznex.net Scott
  5. I've found a few things over the years, old black powder rounds like the 50-70,45-60,38-55 and 40-65. One of the neatest we found was few years ago out javelina hunting the boys found this old pot. Scott

    Mace's Buck

Wow Mace! An absolute buck of a lifetime. My computer's been down and I just got it up and running yesterday, been kind of keeping up from my computer at work. I would say you were due. The body on that beast is unbelievable. Congratulations on a truly beautiful buck!! Hey, are you busy during the Dec. hunt? What to come along on mine in 27/28? Remember what happened the last time I invited you, and actually I was hoping some of your success would rub off on me. Let me know. Scott scotron@aznex.net
  7. Well, I just returned from scouting this morning with Doug, aka "the Red Rabbit", and we were able to glass up 5 bucks all of them legal in NM. Nothing big just some average deer which is fine for my 17 year-old who has the tag and Doug too I'm thinking. Hopefully we can find them again in the morning. I was only able to get photos of 3 of the bucks and they're shown below. One of the smaller bucks. The two smaller bucks that were running together. One of the bigger bucks we saw. I'll let everyone know how we do on opening day. I'll post either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Scott

    Unit 23 Coues Hunt

I'm back from my hunt in NM. Amanda went along to help out and since I had to work over the weekend so we didn't start hunting unitl Monday. Monday we didn't see any bucks that we could get on and we saw lots of does. Monday evening produced a couple of muley bucks. Tuesday morning we arrived at our glassing point with the wind whipping up at close to 40 mph! As the sun came up the wind worsened. We stuck it out and glassed until about 9 or so. We did see the biggest of the muley bucks from the day before bedded across the canyon and watched a guy miss him twice. Anyway, after 3 hours of glassing we packed up and headed back to the 4-wheeler. Wouldn't you know it, while walking back to the ATV we kick up a decent Coues buck that was feeding in the thick junipers on top of the mountain. He ran just a little ways and then stopped and watched us. I saw forked antlers and then thought "What if the wind is blowing again tomorrow, which is the last day?" So I decided to bust him. I dropped him in his tracks with a high shoulder shot at around 50 yards with the ole 300 wsm. I'm glad to have a little venison in the freezer again and now I can hold out for a monster on the AZ December hunt. Thank you Amanda, for the help. I wouldn't have seen that buck in time if you hadn't spotted it. He's nothing huge but I'm very happy with him. Scott

    Unit 23 Coues Hunt

Well we were skunked on the hunt. Finally was able to put the boy on a decent 3x3 but wouldn't you know it, he missed! Upon investigationed we found a twig that he shot through about 15 feet in front of him and believe that caused the miss. The buck was standing broadside at 207 yards and it was a clean miss. It was an enjoyable hunt but we actually saw more bears than bucks, at least after the hunt started. We saw a total of 5 bears in 2 1/2 days. Timberwolf send me an email and I'll put you on those bears. scotron@aznex.net They can be killed. The canyon where James missed his buck. Doug doing the glassing thing. The offending twig. I'm working this weekend but will be heading over there for my hunt on Monday and will hunt the last 3 days of the hunt. I'll hunt some areas that I haven't hunted yet. Will keep all updated. Scott

    Success

Great buck Chris. He looks even better there than hanging in that Oak tree. It was good to finally meet you in person. Everyone you should know that Chris put a lot of time in scouting and on phone calls and had this buck spotted well before the hunt date arrived. This is certainly a good example of how our scouting time can payoff, and payoff big. It doesn't always work out that way, but sometimes you just hit the jackpot. Congratulations Chris on a Super Buck!!!! Scott
