    help in new mexico

It's a little hard to say how the hunts will go this year since this is the first year they've gone to a draw. Typically the hunting hasn't been that great and it might not be this year either until the pressure backs off for a year or two. I have that tag and will be out scouring the area for a buck. I'm only 16 miles from NM so it's nearly in my backyard. I wouldn't want to miss a hunting oportunity of course it's a pretty good drive from where you are. Don't know what else to tell you. Scott

    Poll

I believe that Dr. Elliot Coues was not originally pronounced "cowz' but "cowse" the same way one would pronounce dowse as in "dowse the fire". Irregardless I still call them "cooz" and I'm going to have to go with Bill on this one. Everytime I hear someone prounounce it the way Dr. Elliot pronounced his I figure they're not from around here, and are probably not big Coues hunters. Just my preception. Scott

    San Carlos Couesdeer

Ok, here's the photos. Very nice!! Some serious nontypical growth.
  12. The son of a good friend of mine took this buck on the unit 27 Junior hunt. I received a cell call on my way home from work Friday morning that Steven had a killed a buck and if I could help pack him out. Of course who am I to turn down a fine opportunity such as this. So I grabbed up my camera and with some help from another friend we loaded up the 4-wheeler and and headed out. I was pretty suprised to see the size of this buck and that he was still in the velvet! It's a 6x7 and he is one proud kid. His name is Steven Madrid. Congratulations Steven!!

I scored Steven's buck and came up with 175 gross. A very nice buck to be sure.

    Junior Hunt Success

First off I'll answer the questions. The shirt in question is not tie-dyed. He pretty much bathed in the blood, and the buck was fully intact testicly. Now Steven wasn't the only one in the family with a tag. His younger sister Stephanie also had a tag and the next day she busted her first buck!! Now she really started out right and took a Coues buck! Way to go Stephanie!!! You're one of us now!!! The first chance I get I'm going to put a tape on Steven's and I'll let you know what I come up with. Scott

    first timer in 30A

Check out the book sold on this site called How to Hunt Coues Deer. That should be a good start. Setup early in the morning, on a point that afords you a good view, preferably with the sun to your back. Use high powered quality binoculars mounted on a tripod and commence to picking the area apart. They are there. Scott

    Awsome Growth

These are not the same bucks. Just comparing antler size between them is all.

    Awsome Growth

Here's a comparison with the biggest I saw last year on the Dec. hunt. Man what could've been. Scott

    Awsome Growth

Bret, sounds like he looks just like the gorilla except for the few things you mentioned. I may be working the 1st weekend and hopefully I'll be hunting after that. Thanks for everyone's imput, I think we're all in the ballpark on what this buck scores. Maybe in 2 1/2 months we'll find out for sure. Scott
  22. ScottAdams

    Awsome Growth

Might have to do that Bret. I don't think he quite rivals the legendary Gorilla but he's a great buck none the less. You have any time off in Dec?

    Awsome Growth

Well, I hope you're right Bret. I guessed him to be at least 105. I know from other views of him that he is as wide as his ears. G-2's that reach way up there (maybe 8 or 10 inches) and very good mass. I saw 3 bucks today and all of them were out there at the one mile marker. I saw what I think was this buck for about 10 minutes befrore he went over the ridge. I now believe I have a better idea of where he roams, and might be able to find hime when December rolls around. We'll see. I put some fresh batteries in the trail cam and will check it again in a couple of weeks. Scott
