  1. Thank you all on your comments and congratulations. Don't know if I live up to some of the descriptions some of you have attached to me but it's cool anyway. I'll second what Amanda said "This was an absolute dream hunt! Beautiful weather, great friends, gorgeous country, lots of great coues bucks and a dramatic finish to the last day!" Thank you all again!!

  15. I have that setup with the Outdoorsman adapter and a Jim White Head. Absolutely love it. I sold my 15's and use this setup exclusively. The large field of view is great! The brightness and clarity has to been seen to be believed.

Hunt Of A Lifetime on the Kaibab

Great story Don. I love to see those kids get an opportunity like that, and you're right, it's not the kill, it's the journey getting there. Thanks.

  19. We had a busy weekend hunting. The unit 27 Whitetail hunt is loaded with people and finding a place to hunt that’s not overrun is a chore in and of itself! My daughter-in-law, Chelsea had a tag and Austin and I took her out to a spot that was relatively easy to hunt, to see about getting her first deer. Austin had picked a small out of the way pocket that held Coues deer but one that was overlooked by most if not all hunters. Access was easy and you practically glass from the vehicle. We went in Friday evening and right away located a small buck feeding on the hillside about 600 yards across from us. Austin and Chelsea started across the canyon to close the distance. They were able to work within 240 yards of the buck that had now bedded. Chelsea was able to take the buck with one well-placed shot. The buck never got out of his bed. She shot it with the same gun that Austin and James had both killed their first deer with, a Remington model 700 chambered in 270. . Here's the buck in his bed. Chelsea and Austin with her buck. The next morning I went with my son James, his friend Dustin Pollock and Trent Neff. We hiked back into an area where we were up high with a commanding view of miles of country surrounding us. James and Dustin had tags and Trent and I were along to help glass. We weren’t glassing long when Dustin spotted a bull elk. He had long 3 foot spikes and was feeding on a ridge that was just to our right. A few minutes later Dustin says “I got a good buck!” We all swing our binoculars over to where he was looking and soon we had 2 bucks feeding on the same ridge the elk was on. The biggest looked to be a pretty nice buck and Dustin decided he wanted it. We ranged from where we were sitting and the rangefinder showed 680 yards! We had my rifle along that Trent had built it was 6.5mm Winchester Short Mag with a Savage action and a Shaw barrel. The gun was literally tuned to perfection and was proven accurate out to one thousand yards. Dustin dialed the scope up to 680 and settled in for the shot. We had a gusting crosswind which made shooting at that distance very difficult. Dustin missed with his first two shots with the wind carrying the bullet a good 3 to 4 feet to the left. After his 3rd shot the buck it looked like the buck was hit and he quickly bedded under a dead oak with some brush in front of him. We took this opportunity to move down the ridge to get as close as we could to him. This put us right at 600 yards. The buck didn’t stay put long and soon moved about 3 yards and re-bedded. This time he was in full, broadside view. Dustin dialed the scope to 600 yards and settled in for the shot. Just before the shot the wind suddenly quit blowing and Dustin settled the crosshairs on the bucks chest and gently squeezed the trigger. I saw the buck rock in his bed and about a second later we heard a loud “Whop” as the bullet slammed into the buck’s chest! The buck gently rolled over onto his back and it was all over. This was Dustin's first Coues. The sunrise. The buck!! The hike out.

    Berger bullets for hunting

We used Berger bullets in that 6.5 on the buck we killed in unit 27 (http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/44211-unit-27-bucks-updated-storyline/ ) At 600 yards we recovered the bullet from the chest of the buck and the bullet and expanded beautifully, "textbook" mushroom as they say.
