Funny how this went from a small guide from Chloride, NM hunting near Big Bend, TX went way out in left field. I smell a cover up since the local sheriff says "they can't confirm any across the border violence" but the investigation is still underway. I do know the TX border from Big Bend down to Laredo TX has quite a bit of violence. Seems like this is cartel retaliation/warning for helping border patrol. I will hunt the NM or AZ border without any second thought. I would just take extra precautions.

I know it is a week early but tomorrow we leave for our "White Christmas" on the beaches of Florida. We are leaving all computers at home and will only have our phones. We are not using data on the phones to have some "quality" family time together for the vacation. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. P.S.--Wish I was hunting but maybe will work in some deep sea fishing while out there.

Lots of turkeys over here but not the kind you are talking about .

I wasn't the loser but the finder. Had to do some work in the drop down ceiling in a diamond store and found where they had put the employee's Christmas bonuses. Imagine finding a thick envelope of cash in May. I gave it back to the owner and he had been looking since December.

First Successful Solo Backpack Hunt

Awesome Job! I also have a 13 year old daughter with asthma and it can be scary as all get out. Five days it must have been a pretty bad attack. Hope it gets better. -
Buffalo Berries? The leaves look kind of similar.

Depends on the state you are in. Here in NM if you CCW into a store that is posted you do break a state law.

I grew up with a Mark I and it is a blast to shoot. The wife has a Mark II and it is also a blast to shoot. I can't really tell any difference between the two. The only problem I have is finding .22 ammo locally. I finally just bought a .17 WSM rifle since I can find ammo anytime I look.

My only question is that is a 300 Win. Mag, which appears to be a belted case and they should headspace off the belt and not the shoulder. Would the OAL of the cartridge for the primer not going off not matter? Seems like the firing pin might be getting gummed. I have only had misfires on rim fires since I have not shot a factory load in over 25 years.

You forgot that if necessary pine cones are meant to go one way.

I figured I would put this in bowhunting rather than gear. Thoughts and opinions on tree stand vs. tree saddle. I have been researching this quite a bit and I am thinking about going to a tree saddle. I use a rock climbing (RC) harness now as my safety system for work going up poles and tie off when working from equipment. It seems like with the saddle you are facing the tree instead of having your back to it. It seems you have more movement around the tree so you can get better shot angles. It also seems like saddles are lighter and quieter than stands. So are saddles the future of hunting from trees?

Some time is better than no time. I bet you have a great time. Waiting for pics.

Look at the Motorola Talk about 35 mile radios. I know they come with rechargeable batteries but I think you have the option of dropping double A's into them rather than the rechargeable batteries.

Maybe it is a PETA member feeling sorry for those starving deer . Give GPS coordinates to G&F and let them put up cameras to catch them.

Sounds like fun. I remember when I was about 10 or 11 my uncle set up his 760 and an army can of surplus ammo. He told me to shoot until I was tired or out of ammo. I think about 40 rounds later I was done, it didn't have a recoil pad either but then again do you really need one on an '06?

I would rather see it go to someone who needs it but I would be willing to drive from Los Lunas to get it. Love elk meat. Only better meat I have eaten is Oryx.

Thoughts on trail cam results?
Red Sparky replied to YoungHuntr's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
So many conflicts in your post. First you state you don't care as long as it is a legal buck then you post about more mature bucks. Which do you want? Everybody thinks running a trail camera you will see all animals in the area. Not true. An example I will give you here for mule deer. One ridge running E-W, about 1000 foot in elevation from the bottom to the top, 3 benches on the ridge. Lowest bench had does and young bucks with water tanks. Middle bench had small bucks, forkies to 3x3's with a few does. Top bench had big bucks with no does. Those big bucks would only have to go 1/2 mile to water at the tanks but they never did. I would start out at the spring and if not happy there then move. -
The other thing that was not mentioned in NM Unit 9 was the land swap. Prime public hunting ground swapped for crap land and that prime land given to landowners. You also forgot to mention the private land owners herding elk off public land into private land. If I can find the picture I will post the bull I took in 2007 on public land in NM Unit 9.

Nice bucks. Great job! I was ROFLMAO thanks to auto correct on the third to last sentence.

Seems pretty easy to look at the tag and find who lost it. Of course here we don't have carcass tags anymore, just the license.

Nice buck. Good job.

Breakfast is easy: Coffee everyday. Make biscuits at home, then biscuits and gravy with red chile powder one day (maybe two). Make coffee and then add that to instant oatmeal another day. Pre-made breakfast burritos another day. The day after steaks on the grill is steak and egg omelets. Dinners can be easy too: First night is chicken breast with enough leftovers for a few days worth of lunch. Chili cheese dogs. Steak with potatoes and onions. Homemade green chile stew with crackers, depends on when it thaws when that is eaten. Chicken pot pie. Shish-ka-bobs. I cook a lot at home and then freeze to take. The two best implements I have found for cooking outside are a Dutch Oven and a Wok.

I have the Bowflex Tread Climber and when I first got it I changed my diet and used it every day. I took 60 pounds off in 6 months. Now it is time to get on it again. Get a routine and stick with it.
