    Tree stands vs. tree saddles

The sling type thingy. I find my rock climbing harness very comfortable. From what I have seen of tree saddles most of the weight is on your butt and back of the legs and you mainly sit in it. You can add a back support by having another strap tying into your bridge. You have to have some form of step around the tree to step up on when you are shooting. Your legs either straddle the tree or use knee pads to rest your knees against it without any weight on them. I am going to put up a used power pole in the back yard and start shooting from it. I don't plan on being in it except for about 4 hours in the morning and four hours in the evening elk hunting. 2 hours a day practicing out of it will let me know if I am happy or not. I have found about 3 ambush spots for elk on public land where it would be beneficial and not have the cost of 3 different tree stands to be stolen. I do have one stand now for an all day sit.

looking for a place to hunt in unit 23

I am getting it done in Jan. after the contract I am working on at KAFB is over. I should be healed by the first part of April. Figure I would give up the Jan. bow hunt to go in for surgery. I will get it worked out and not go against Dr.'s orders this time. I got it hit, rolled, at the SlipKnot concert I took my daughter to about 2 weeks before hunting season. I made my own walking cast since theirs would not work out in the woods. Mine worked for the most part until that canyon, rock rolled under me and I slid down hill a ways with most of my weight on it.

    Where am I 10/19/16

Sounds like a story I heard about a grave over in the middle of the Black Range by Hillsboro,NM. Heard a story that he robbed a miner about the time they hit the Bridal Chamber in Lake Valley and that is where the posse caught up to him on his way to Silver City. Don't know if it is true or not.

looking for a place to hunt in unit 23

I usually bow hunt the north end up between Grande Estates and Luna. I think the farthest shot for a rifle up there would be about 200 yards as it is fairly timbered and brushy. I don't know of anyplace to do two mile walks unless you want to drop about 1000 feet into a canyon and then back up. Maybe if you had a buddy to drive down the road to pick you up someplace. I followed the few roads for the most part this last year due to an injured ankle. I made the mistake of dropping down into one of those canyons and now I get to have surgery on my ankle.

    rv solar panels

The other thing you might want to consider is getting rid of the 12 volt batteries and run two deep cycle 6 volts in series with a solar panel. Even without a solar panel two 6 volts in series are better than 2 12 volts in parallel.

    Culture or clueless

Did the bear have a Trump bumper sticker ?No The Donald was not running then. Besides I found better bumper stickers to keep others away. The only thing that goes on my truck are PETA, WWF, the Rainbow Flag, etc. . Now if anybody shows up, even if it just me without the family, I just go tell them " I hope my husband and I don't keep you up with all the grunting tonight." Had several move camp after that.Thats real cute until you try it on a couple of fruity guys that are into that sort of thing and they ask if you're interested in a swap. No you just say you are in a committed relationship and too jealous to share. Not too worried about it either way.

    The rifle is ready

I can't even see a deer that far. That is one reason I bow hunt.

Should you get a tag if you can't read English?

Ignorance crosses all walks of life. So what if they guy didn't speak or read english. I ran into two hunters who spoke perfect english. They had bought left over deer tags here in Unit 23 that separates mule deer from coues deer, most units it is a fork antlered deer. When I asked what species they were hunting they just said deer. They had to look at their tags to find out they had coues tags when they were hunting mule deer. Good thing they had not seen any deer yet.

    Mixed Emotions

I am not much into bear hunting but this story has peaked my interest. I might just have to try it.

Had that happen to me once. First one to set up and about 3 in the afternoon a group set up right next to us by the stream. It wasn't even a established camping area so they thought 30 yards was far enough. They started drinking and playing loud music as soon as they got there. About midnight with the radio still going and them all passed out, a 6'3" 280 pound bear walked through camp, and the radio ended up swimming with the fishes. Didn't have anymore loud music the rest of the weekend as they left because they were afraid of bears.

Sucks for your situation. The bright side, if there is one, is you get to sell it yourself rather than the ex.

    5x5 desert muley

I figured he died when I read "his bones were scattered all over".
  17. They have to prove you are illegally hunting. What are they going to cite you for? I have carried my .270 many times on my daughters muzzle loader hunts and never been told anything about it over here. If they ask I just say what I have the rifle for, coyotes. Of course during our bow season, all big game is bow only. They still can't cite you for just having a rifle. You really want to get them really upset tell them you are hunting wolves but haven't seen any yet. I use the 3rd definition (to search for; seek; endeavor to obtain or find (often followed by up or out).

    Fords new 6x6

It would not be a load hauler rather a trailer hauler. Looks like you would not have any bed space since it is taken up by fender wells.

    Bye Bye Cabelas

This has been talked about for a while. It is just a merger where both stores will stay open just be run by Bass Pro from what I understand.

    what unit?

Seems like all your arguments are based on hypotheticals. Everything you have answered here is based on personal opinions and hypotheticals, just like we have. Where are the facts a unit number adds to the story? Just a hypothetical or personal opinion on why it adds to the story. I could care less where somebody kills an animal, the unit number adds nothing for me. Some of the best stories are when an animal is not killed. That is my opinion and it is completely different than yours. So here are my hypothetical predictions on your ease of drawing units. A 200"+ mule deer, 100"+ coues deer, or 400"+ bull elk gets killed in your ease of drawing unit. Somebody states " I killed him in X unit", you are no longer going to have a ease of drawing unit. The other part of my prediction is people are going to start applying due to it is easy to draw and you will no longer have an easy to draw unit.

Muzzy bull killed in a secret unit in Az.

Nice bull and sounds like a great "secret unit".
  22. Red Sparky

    what unit?

So there was a TV show about your unit? You dont think that had more to do with it than you telling a few people online? How many of the neighboring units also went up in applications? The stats just don't support the hyperbole of secrecy. There are no secrets anymore. Nope not in my unit but an adjoining unit. Everybody started applying for central NM due to the show saying that is where they were hunting public land. So if the TV show wasn't aired I would still be pulling tags for that unit. The difference between the TV show and the internet is the TV show is only aired certain times but the internet is accessible 24/7. They are now putting TV shows on the internet so you can search for it and find it in short order. As far as telling people on the internet in forums I really don't care as residents here get 84% of the tags so I am more than willing to help NR to have a decent hunt. Let's go back about 30 years before the internet took off and we did not have a deer draw here. Go to the local sporting goods store and buy a tag for anywhere in the state. My cousin killed a nice big mule deer and got his picture in the paper and gave an area description where the deer was killed. Next year there were about 200 more hunters in the area. So what difference does the unit make in the story? You tell me as I have my own ideas based on my own experiences. Why do you think there are so many "I drew this unit and have never stepped foot in it so where do I start ?" Why are they applying for that unit? Usually it is post number 1 and you won't hear back from the OP after the hunt has happened.

Hunting in New Mexio and Residency

You missed the military guys stationed here. They get resident status.
  24. Red Sparky

    what unit?

So to answer the original question of why not to give out unit numbers here is my perspective. I use to muzzle loader hunt a unit here for elk where I usually drew every year, 200 tags with about 500 applicants putting in for it. Not a very popular unit but a few elk in there to be able to get on them every year. I love hunting and chasing the animals even if I am not successful. I gave people information about the unit in general forums on different websites. Then there was the TV show where the bull was snuck up on and shot pretty close range during the archery hunt. Now there are still the same 200 tags with over 1500 people putting in for them. I haven't drawn that unit since so I went to another unit. Again not a very popular unit but enough elk in there to have some fun. So enjoy the stories, the unit shouldn't matter the least bit in the story.

    ground blinds

I have used the dog house blind. Bought it new on e-bay with free shipping for a decent price. It is a good shotgun/ rifle/ muzzle loader blind but too low to draw a bow in.
