    Hunting w/Non-Lead

This just came up on Born and Raised Outdoors. 6 days ago they posted on Youtube coper vs. lead ammo. Interesting to watch but I don't expect to change anybodies minds. Am I going to go to an all copper bullet? I doubt it as I still hunt with a muzzle loader and don't get the velocity to make copper perform the way it should. I will still use steel on my broad heads however since they contain no lead.

    Fishing near Santa Fe?

If you want to hike in try the Mora River and hike into Mora Flats. I grew up in Santa Fe and spent my summers on the streams in the Pecos. Cow Creek was practically my summer home. The problem is it is so crowded now. Las Vegas is not that far and there are some good lakes and streams that you can follow up into the wilderness. Other lakes would be Cochiti, Santa Cruz or Abiquiu.

New Mexico Elk Hunt - Access Issues

The habitat management and access validation is required only once a year. If I have a bear tag, elk tag, deer tag, antelope tag, small game license I only have to purchase one validation and it is good for the year with any of my tags. It is also like $5. I think the Habitat Stamp is for fishing and is only like $4. Good luck.

    Trail cameras

Was literally going to post same gif! Looked up... real thing. 100' maximum transmission to other wifi capable (smart) device. 100' is pretty useless. There are uses for 100' transmission. I make my own game cameras using Aduino cards and wireless transmitters. The PIR is the master and the "flash" and cameras are the slaves. I have been using old digital cameras that I buy for about $5, use a CCTV security camera IR light ring, and the PIR. One of my cameras is under $15 and hard to find all 3 pieces. The only down side is all pictures have the IR filter removed from the camera so look up what they look like in daytime. Imagine sending a wireless copy someplace and having your camera stolen, you still have the pictures.

    Trivia question

Late May or June. Those with school age children need to wait until school is out. Besides June would be the perfect time to put up all my trail cams on tanks.

    Trail cameras

I think the law is crap and won't stand up to a challenge butI l like the loop holes. All I have to do is be any person that goes to a G&F meeting to talk with the department about what I am seeing, to give public input and consult with the department and if my camera is marked I am completely legal. I have just started my own non-profit biological study on Bigfoot and am using the cameras to see if I can catch one watering to prove their existence. Who were the groups lobbying for this law? HSUS or PETA involved in anyway?

    Backpacks

Love it. It's so simple would love to see a pic of it so my over complicating brain can get it. LOL. Also there are a lot of great threads on this. I like Outdoorsmans packs but there are plenty of good choices (and bad ones!). Think of roasting something on a spit. The two guys take up the ends and there is no fire underneath. The old school eastern method to get deer out of the woods. You don't have your hunting partner skewered and over your shoulder. Maybe that is why trphyhntr's spots are "secret"

I hunt solo. You know what they say about keeping a secret? If more than one person knows about it it's not a secret.

    Backpacks

Depends on what you plan on doing with it. My first consideration is I wanted to carry a water bladder with 2-3 liters of water. Second I wanted to organize my gear to have along. Kill kit with game bags, first aid kit, small survival items, snacks, tp and wipes, etc.. Then this year I got serious about a meat hauler. I would have bought a new Mystery Ranch Metcalf pack but Cabelas had their Alaskan I and bag on sale for around $100. I just use the bag I have now and secure it to the external frame of the Alaskan without their bag on it. If you want to pack back into the far hills for a week then there are better options than what I have. I just use mine as a daypack with the ability to pack out a quarter on the first trip.

    Drought

Nice bull. Very happy there are no power lines in the picture. Here in NM we now have a tag in the draw for a year round, any weapon elk hunt, so there is a chance anybody can draw the tag and have an opportunity like that. Of course we would have to have elk like that and not the dinks we have. Why everybody wants to hunt NM I will never understand.

    Storms a comin

We got hit yesterday in Albuquerque. We were at the movies and on the drive home on I-40 from Tramway to Louisiana, about 3-4 miles, it was windshield wipers on high and 45 mph with no visibility. That means the "official rainfall" at the airport was probably 0.03 inches. I have been watching the radar in the Gila and looks like this whole week they have over 50% chance of rain all week.

    NMDGF Elk and Deer Rules

It looks like 20% reduction of tags in the Burros for deer and the rest of the unit 6-9% reduction in tags. I haven't seen leftovers for sale in unit 23 for the last two years. Hunter run ins have been way down since quite a few people would put in for 3 top tier units and use that unit as a back up to buy a tag.

    NM unit 24 coues

I have seen them up in the trees between Pinos Altos and Lake Roberts but there is about 1 to every 50 mule deer so I would not hunt there as my first choice.

    Unit Advice

The other thing to throw in is make sure you have good sunscreen, high SPF rating. Had a buddy from back east come hunting here in NM in November and it was shirtsleeve weather. He started getting sunburned in the "thin" air of 6500 feet and I let him dope up with my sunscreen. It was a good thing I had aloe vera gel for aftercare the rest of the trip.

What you talking about the good old days? Still do, just don't get caught. In the last 6 months we have upgraded 7 FPE panels.

    Unit Advice

They have a free 7 day trial for Onxmaps that might see if you want to purchase it or not. They don't give you all the bells and whistles but it would let you know if you want to purchase a years subscription or not.

Lights and receps should be on separate breakers, sounds like they lost a 110VAC leg and have one of the breaker sides dead. Try turning off the main breaker to reset it and turn it back on. If that doesn't work turn off some breakers on the left side of the panel and see if any lights or receps turn off if not then try the same thing on the right side. If you know someone with a meter they can remove the panel front and see if there is 120VAC on each leg before and after the main which will tell you if it is lost at the breaker or at the utility side. Check the breaker feeding the sub panel. It also depends on the age of the house. I have worked on old houses where all the home runs were brought into the lighting box in the ceiling and split from there. We also wire houses in all #12, except smokies and dedicated circuits like dryer and range, so if we have to pick up a light we can. Like bedroom 2 and 3 will be one circuit wth four receps and one light per room to stay within the 10 outlet rule. In commercial all the receps are separated from the lighting.

Sounds like you lost a leg on the supply side for the power company. On your panel the left side is 1,3,5,7 etc. and the right side is 2,4,6,8,etc.(top to bottom). 1,2 are one phase, 3,4 are another phase. The way to get 240 volts is both phases like 1,3 or 3,5 or 2,4 or 4,6, a two pole breaker. If you try to get 240 on 1,5 or 2,6 you won't because it is the same phase. Just like if there is a three wire sharing a neutral the supplies have to be on different phases. Get a multi tester for voltage and where the two mains come into the house you should have somewhere around 120 volts between one phase and neutral, close to the same reading on the other phase, and somewhere around 240 volts phase to phase. One time on a three phase building they lost everything on B phase due to a bird becoming a crispy critter and popping a fuse on the power company side.

You have not seen my NM tap water when I made that reference. I know El Paso needs water so I flush twice .

    Fluid intake?

Had kidney stones so a gallon of water a day. I get these energy drink mix packets from Wal-Mart to mix into a bottle or two of water. I now only have 2-3 Dr. Peppers instead of a 12 pack per day. At least 2 cups of coffee, juice or a smoothie. My pee looks like tap water as I never want to have another kidney stone for the rest of my life.

    Shed a teer

It is not weakness to shed a tear but love. The last hunt my Dad went with me on was an elk hunt in 2007. I talked him into it to just sit around camp. The tag I drew was one of four in a WMA. My tattoo on my arm is the skull of the elk I killed on that trip. I value it more than any other hunt because I knew it would be my last hunt to have my Dad along. We still talk about hunting and fishing all the time, but that is all it is now, just talk.
