  1. diamond point has lots of quartz, but the digging season is closed, you can pick up stuff that's laying there. also, the paleo site on 260 has lots of aquatic fossils. i take my kids there quite often, it's always a blast for them.

why is digging season closed? rain exposing the rocks or something like that?

  2. If it's running great, and sounds great, that's a bonus. A sick diesel is obvious.

Definitely get it checked out for a once over. If you're up north in phoenix, I'd take it to Strictly Diesel. Down south, try One stop truck shop by the Sky Harbor airport..

More MPG, that's a tuner. But you really wanna make sure the headbolts are done before you do any serious street tunes. Once it gets a clean bill of health, try to get a SCT X4 tuner, and maybe contact one of the specialty tuner shops like Innovative Diesel on their website and they custom do custom tunes dependent on what you've done to your truck. I hear a lot of folks getting 18mpg+ on their street tunes.

I bought my 04 with 70k miles. I put about 1200 in for pulleys and belts so far. Everything else was fine. The dealer added a BP EGR..I'll be getting the headbolts done before I do any serious towing with it. Probably in Feb next year. (It's a 4k job. And while the engine is apart you want to do any work that needs to be done at that point.)... HPOP, Oil Cooler, any leaks, injectors..etc..

The 6.0 is a fantastic machine once a few upgrades are done. But like so many have said prior, it's all about maintenance. Don't put that off. Change all the filters right off the bat and use only Motorcraft filters. And an oil change (Probably 15w-40 Rotella or 5w40- T6). Oh, and once you fill the tank, every tank, use some Diesel Kleen to baby the injectors. Cheap insurance.

This might help explain a little: http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f23/avg-cost-making-6-0l-reliable-bulletproof-292265/

If you have any other questions, just shoot a PM. I'll answer what I can.

And Dieseltechron on youtube is your new best friend.

    And watch this:

But don't take it seriously =)

    brilliant stuff. thx

  3.

    It looks like bismuth.

I wonder if the intense heat of the smelter altered the chemical or crystal composition.

    Neat stuff! Thanks for sharing.

Similar to Bismuth crystals. But Bismuth are square pyramidal crystals, these are triangular pyramidal. And Bismuth is multicolored, this is black. But fantastic eye for similarities. Good call.

have you taken this to the material science engineering group at ASU? That is was my major and I could put you in touch with guys over there to characterize it.

    PM me if interested.

I hope you do this. That is just crazy looking. Let us know what they say. My father in law and his father ran sluices in the Yukon for a while. I love seeing the stuff they came back with.

    Good luck.

i ran it past my professor. He actually remembered me after 13 years. That a good or bad thing??

Confirmed: it is Bismouth. The interesting finish is either a sulfide compound, or the natural oxide of the bismouth. no way to tell unless you do some destructive testing.

  5. I have a 2004 F250.

Love it! Yeah, it needs to be bulletproof. Here's a quick list of things that should be done.

First- get rid of the green crap coolant that Ford put in there. Change to a ELC Red instead. (Rotella) (Flush it out- don't just drain it)

Nothing but Ford filters in the entire truck. Dont use aftermarket.

Get a scangauge- check the delta between oil and coolant. Shouldn't be more than 15 degrees.

And last but not least, the headgaskets. It's quite a job- they replace the Ford Bolts with ARP Studs. You can tell what kind of bolts are currently in there now just by looking.

And.. I just saw the link above. Nice. Also, if you hit up thedieselstop.com , everything you need to know is there.

    Brilliant. I'll set it up.

    Thx

  6. No pic's but I've been picking up cool looking rocks for years! I just checked out a book at the library called "Gem Trails of Arizona", by James Mitchell. It's got lots of good info and maps to gem rich areas. You might want to check it out.

    TJ

    Love the recommendation. Thx!

  7. I was tired of taking out my SUV that couldn't get the job done while elk hunting, so I finally got a proper truck to work: '04 F350 6.0 diesel with the off-road package.

Question is now: did I just guarantee myself a tag for this year's draw or did I guarantee tag soup? Success or soup?

  8. My son is taking a ton of interest in geology (he's 6), and he has been wanting to get out and search for all the rocks where AZ is known to have them. I heard that there are more meteorites are found in AZ than any other state.

Anyone have pics of cool stones they've found in their travels?
