    Dialed for Distance

Went out shooting with Tac (Terry) this weekend to learn my dope at various distances. We started at 200 and worked out in 100 yard increments. My goal was to verify MOA out to 600 as I feel this will be my effective hunting range. My Strelok app was dead on out to 600. I didn't measure groups at 600, but they appeared to be 3" or less. I was really happy with the results. After verifying to 600, we took the rifles a little further ending up at 850 yards. My Strelok app wasn't accurate after 600 yards. The app called for 14.5 MOA at 700, I only had to dial 13.5 MOA. We went to 850 yards and the app called for 19.87 MOA, I dialed at 18.5 MOA. My scope ran out of room at 18.5 MOA, so if I start shooting further I will have to get a 20 MOA rail. I will probably do this after my Wyoming hunt and 36B post Thanksgiving hunt. Big thanks to Terry for taking me out. The following pics are 2 shots from my 6.5 Creedmoor and Terrry's 338 Lapua at 850 yards. I am pretty sure the 2 larger splatters (furthest left) are his .338 Lapua. The smaller splatters (high at the neck and right/low of center) are my Creedmoor. Pretty happy with the result and I see how long range can be addicting. Gerrit

It has definitely been a learning process thus far and I am sure it will continue to be.

    Which brass?

A couple pictures from my trip to the range last weekend. Both pictures are groups at 200 yards when I was zeroing the scope. The second pic was my best group. After this group I adjusted the scope 2 clicks left and shot the group in the first pic. Both are 3 shot groups. I think the rifle will be ready for opening day in Wyoming in 2 weeks.
  7. I am going to start reloading for my 6.5 Creedmoor. This will be the first time reloading anything for me. I am going to be using RL17, CCI BR2 Primers and 129 grain Nosler ABLR bullets. I have the following brass to use: 50 pcs new, un-fired Norma 60 pcs once fired Hornady 100 pcs once fired Winchester Which brass do you all recommend? I plan to start at 41 grains and work up. I would like to see velocities near or above 2900 FPS and still maintain accuracy.
  8. Late starter here, 39 years old on my first big game hunt. Every kill is as fun as the first.

    500+ Yard Range

I am sure this has been discussed or asked before, but does anyone know of a public range or place to shoot to 500+ yards? I have settled on a load for my 6.5 Creedmoor that will be more than sufficient for my hunts this year, so it is time to start taking it to range and figuring out my drops. I leave at the end of September for my Wyoming hunts, so hoping to get this dialed in soon. Any ino you can provide is greatly appreciated.

    Watch Your Step

These are what I purchased. Really light weight and hardly know i am wearing them. I tend to sweat a little more on my calves due to reduced breath ability, but I will deal with that for peace of mind. I even wore mine on my post Thanksgiving hunt in 36B last year. 3 years ago we bumped into a rattler in late October up in Wyoming, so they can be out during the day even in colder months. You won't regret the Turtle Skins.

And this post would be why I purchased snake gaiters.

    Shooting Techniques

As I have been working on load development with my rifle, I have been trying to work on my shooting techniques. You always hear from others about proper breathing and smooth trigger pull. Recently I noticed that when I am completely still with good breathing and cross hairs on the target, that my aim point moves with my heart beat. I found that my heart beat was transferring through my cheek weld on the stock. The movement was very slight, but I can see how even the slightest movement would affect group sizes. I lightened up my cheek weld significantly so that my cheek was barely touching the stock. This seemed to eliminate my heart beat from affecting movement of my aim point. I know that more trigger time = more accurate shooting. Do ya'll have any techniques that have worked for you. Any fine tuning to your shooting style over the years that has made you more successful?

    WTB: Federal 215 Match Primers

Cliff, I should have some more 210M primers coming I found through Gun Broker. If you want the 210M's to make this trade, let me know. I may be heading up to Payson in the next 2 weekends.

Savage model 10 with heavy varmint barrel, a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock, bedded and free floated topped with a Leoupold VX-6 3x18-44. A lot of good info in this thread. I appreciate all the feedback. The good news is that I really enjoy reloading and the trigger time, so I have nothing but time to get better at both.

    Which brass?

Cliff, thanks again. I owe you one!
  17. I head to Wyoming in 4 weeks for for my hunt. I have 3 deer and 1 antelope tag. I just found out there is a really good chance my buddy and I will be invited to pull some over the counter cow elk tags to hunt some public land that only has private property access in Cody, WY. This is grizzly country and from what I understand, there are plenty of them. I can't afford to buy a new pistol right now, so my choices are my .357 revolver or .45 cal 1911. I am thinking the .357 would be the better choice, although still not really sufficient. I will also get some bear mace. Hunting with a buddy, one of us will likely stand watch with rifle in hand while the other guts and quarters any kills. Which pistol would you take and any ammo recommendations for that pistol?

    Which brass?

So I decided to try to tweak the load a little more using the CCI BR2 primers. Here is the load and the group: 41.4 grains H4350 Berger VLD-H 2.170 CBTO CCI BR2 primers The 4 shot group measures .15"

Elk hunting in Grizzly country, which pistol?

I appreciate the offer. I have a 12 gauge, but don't want to carry that and my rifle. I will take my chances with bear spray and the pistols.

    Which brass?

Good to know. Hopefully the CCI BR2's will shoot. I am pretty sure they will. I can't find any Fed 210M right now.

    Which brass?

I think I found a load. Gonna test again tomorrow. Berger VLD-H 140 grain,41.5 grains H4350. 2.175" base to ogive. Federal 210M primers. Group measures just under .25". Only problem is I don't have any Federal 210M primers (primers were from another shooter). I do have CCI BR2 primers. Hopefully the primers won't affect accuracy much. This is a 4 shot group.

Elk hunting in Grizzly country, which pistol?

Thanks for all the feedback. Bear spray will likely be my first course of action. I am sure that no matter what I do, there isn't much that can prepare one for a heat of the moment charging bear. I will start my search for the right ammo for either of the pistols I do have.
