Ive been told the tikka action is smoother and feeds better, if that is true I think that alone would be worth going with the tikka, but that also could be biased. I really need to just go handle both of them somewhere

The ruger ranch is cool, im still heavily torn between the howa and tikka. It seems there are a decent amount of fit and finish issues people have with the howas but the tikkas seem more consistent. But a carbon stock mini action with threaded barrel right around 5lbs for under $1k is very tempting

For the higher velocity? Even if im cutting the barrel to 18” max maybe even 16.5”?

The ar’s arent nearly as quiet suppressed, ive got an 18” ar and tested it next to my 22” bolt gun with the same can, I can shoot the bolt gun no ear pro, the ar is not quite as friendly on the ears. If the ar were quieter I would surely stick with the route you suggested

I considered the ruger but Id rank the fit and finish on par with the savage I already have. The american ranch rifle does look like a handy set up.

Are loads really dependent on bullet brand? or could projectiles of the same weight be loaded with the same charge regardless of manufacture?

I was gonna drop down about 1/2 a grain, do you think this is sufficient or should I drop back a whole grain?

I recently got a suppressor and all the load development was done pre suppressor. I am thinking the suppressor is adding back pressure and pushing my load over pressure. does this sound plausible?

I just reloaded my first 30-30 cartridges. But I have some questions in regards to OAL and COAL. first OAL, when I measure my re sized once fired brass I measure between 2.035 and 2.04. The reloading books say to cut between 2.028 and 2.030. I do not have a trimmer yet so I omitted this step based on the slight difference in length and the info found online. Was this an incorrect assumption? second, the COAL for this load is 2.550, the factory ammo I have is at a length of 2.05 - 2.1. Why would the factory load have such a short COAL, compared to the load data? to get the bullet to the cannelure I seated to a nominal depth of about 2.35, is this going to cause a problem? I am using imr3031 powder. Rifle is a marlin 336. I did cycle them through the action, they all cycle and chamber seemingly fine.

unfortunately im in tempe, quite the drive from tucson. But I have reloaded quite a few cartridges since that post and learned a lot! I ended up buying a trimmer and headspace gauge (among MANY other tools lol) so am trimming to keep in spec and sizing to bump the shoulders between .002-.005” depending on the rifle.

This is why I was asking, same charge, same weight bullet, different ogive and had pressure signs on one not the other (or atleast I think pressure signs) seeing ejector swipes
