    NM Antelope

Here is the story; I drew a tag in NM unit 13 for the Handicap hunt, there were 10 tags for the unit. There is a large ranch that is owned by the RMEF and operated by the state that is open to public hunting and has good access so I decided to start there. As it turns out most of the other tag holders decided to do the same thing. I watched several other hunters take bucks and in the afternoon the area finally started to quiet down. I had a decent opportunity to kill a very unusual buck whose horns looked like a whitetail with only a main beam, his horns spread out wide and then curved forward, the horns were long but very thin. Another hunter came up on us a buggered them so I decided to keep looking. Late in the afternoon I glassed the buck I shot bedded down in a swale, only his horns and forehead could be seen above the grass. He was relatively close to a road but out of sight of it. We watched from a 1/2 mile away as several trucks went down the road without knowing he was there. The trick to hunting from a wheelchair is to figure out how to get yourself into a position where you have an opportunity without running the thing off. We continued to watch from afar and he seemed very relaxed in his bed, several trucks came and went while we watched without spooking him so we made a plan. We drove around until we cut the distance to about 600 yards and watched him some more. We studied the landmarks and then drove down the road until we thought we were opposite the buck, pulled off the road and got ready. After few minutes of looking I found him again glassing, only the tips of his horns were visible. We got into position me with my rifle and my buddy Larry with the rangefinder, and waited. About a half hour later the buck stood up looked at us and started slowly walking away. He stopped and Larry ranged him at 335 then he started moving again, a few steps more and he stopped again. Larry said 339 and I held for that distance and touched off a shot. I lost him with the recoil and Larry flinched and lost him too. There was nothing out there, all was quiet and still. We waited about 10 minutes and headed out to where he had been, when we got about 250 yards out I spotted a patch of white and put my binos up and there he was, he had dropped right in his tracks. I was shooting a Weatherby Classic Mark V with a Zeiss 3.5x10 scope in 7mm mag shooting a hand loaded Barnes TTSX 140 gr and 74 gr of R22 at 3260 fps.

    Easy fix or PITA?

I had a 2004 and a 2005 both had this issue. There are guys that do a mobile repair for this service, it costs about $300 to do the whole gauge panel (recommended) or $125 per gauge.

  7. I am so stoked, I won the lottery trifecta! I drew early 16a rifle bull elk, 13 Antelope and late 13 Mule deer. I love the fact that NM has avoided bonus points, I appreciate knowing that I have the same chance at drawing as everyone else each year. In my opinion, all the bonus point system does is make everyone wait longer to get a tag and keep the coffers full while everyone tries to accumulate points.

    WTB or trade for a A. H. Fox 20 or 16 gauge

I have an AH Fox AE grade 16ga with two sets of barrels. The gun was built in 1912 and was the 11th 16ga built by Fox, serial number 300011. The gun was originally delivered with a set of 26" IC&M barrels and was returned to the factory later and a set of 30" M&F barrels and beavertail forearm were added to the gun. Somewhere along the way the gun was restock in nicely figured American walnut and extensive checkering similar to a D grade. PM me if interested.

    7mm loads

I shoot a load of 70gr of R22 with a 140 Barnes TTSX in Winchester case with a CCI 250 primer. In my rifle the bullets are seated out to a 3.39" oal. This load shoots 3260 fps in a 24" barrel.

    Rifle Appraisal

Your rifle is a Mauser Kar 98, the configuration is known as the Karbiner or short rifle as evidenced by the turned down bolt handle, sling mounts on the left and shorter barrel length(standard rifles had a 28" barrel). Your rifle is a small ring action, the KAR 98 was built on both the small ring and large ring action.Look closely at the crest on the front receiver ring for a clue the origin and date of mfg. These rifles were built by several different manufacturers, especially during wartime. Because of the alterations and condition, your gun does not have a high value. I have attached a pic of what the gun looked like in original form. The small ring actions are sought after for building custom rifles.
  12. I got an offer to hunt a private ranch in SW CO where they have taken several 200" bucks in the past, so I burned my points and put in for the 4th season hoping for some rut action and a chance at a big buck. Well this year turned out to be the warmest that anyone can remember and the big bucks had not moved into the lower ground where the ranch was located by the time the season started. I saw lots of deer and passed many small bucks and finally on the last evening of the hunt I was able to take this buck. We glassed him up by himself and got to 400 yards, 1 shot with my 7mag using 140 Barnes TTSX at 3250 fps.
  13. I just hunted in a unit with lots of tags and while I was on my hunt and saw lots of deer, easily 70-80 per day including several small bucks each day. I was hunting for meat but I refuse to shoot a baby. I did finally find a buck that was another year older and tagged him on day three, he was a 18" 3x3 with eye guards. I saw several other hunters with deer and all of them had shot a yearling that was either a spike or a very small fork. I do not condemn in any way these hunters who elected to shoot a buck that is legal under the current rules as I am sure there are many here who would not have killed the buck I harvested. Each person make their own choice on the animal they want to take. For what it's worth, in the unit where I was hunting the herd appears very healthy as almost every doe had a fawn with her including many with twins and my deer was fat as could be. Do you think we would benefit from a 3 point minimum like they have in other states? I am all for opportunity but it would be nice to see a slightly older age class bucks in the general population. It seems to me that it would only be one year with a reduced harvest then the take would return to normal but with nicer bucks for everyone. I know there are big bucks out there and it takes effort to find them but as is the majority of the harvest in regular hunts consists of under age bucks. What does this group think?

    7x57 Mauser loads?

I looked up the elk load for my rifle; it is a max load developed in my rifle so be cautious. It is slightly compressed and requires the extra case capacity gained by seating the bullet out. My load is 160 Nosler partition, 48.5 gr of R19, Winchester case, CCI large rifle primer, bullet seated for a 3.122 oal. This load goes right at 2700fps in my rifle. It shot right through the elk in the pic, shot behind the shoulder at about 130 yards, took two steps and collapsed. Here is a pic of a loaded round. When my wife had that hunt I developed a practice load with components that I had on hand but it worked well and had very low recoil. The load was 120 gr Speer spitzer with 40gr of 4895, bullet seated to the ogive. The velocity was close to the 160 gr load at 2700. My wife shot the gun with that load all summer before her hunt, the lack of recoil made it fun and she gained a ton of confidence.

    7x57 Mauser loads?

Here are some pics of my rifle in 7x57 including a pic from when my wife used it to kill a nice bull in 3c a few years ago.
  18. My oldest memories of any kind are of hunting with mt dad, I started tagging along at 3 or 4, I started wingshooting as soon as I could hold up the gun at around 5 or 6. I took hunter safety when I was in the Cub Scouts at 9 and I was a good shot by then. In CA where I grew up you had to be 12 to hunt big game and it just killed me that I could not hunt deer with the others when I was 10-11. I shot my first buck at 12 and have taken at least one big game animal and lots of birds every year since. I am 54 now.

    7x57 Mauser loads?

Most 7x57's have a long throat originally for the 175 gr round nose that was standard in the early years of this cartridge. Assuming your gun does, my favorite load is a 140 Nosler partition with 47 gr of Win 760, CCI standard primer and Winchester case, seat the bullet out near the lands. In my rifle ( a custom Mauser that is Mannlicher stocked with a 21" barrel) I get just over 2800 fps. This load is super accurate in my rifle and this combination has taken whitetail, mule & blacktail deer, antelope and elk. The best thing about the 7x57 is that it is very soft shooting for the performance and both my wife and sister have used this rifle and load with success. I also have a "elk load" that uses a 160 Nosler partition with R19 but I have to look it up if you are interested.

    Truck tire load ratings

It depends on how much weight you carry most of the time and the air pressure that you usually run in the tires. The D tires are marginal when your truck is at max load but will be better when the truck is unloaded and the air pressure is 50 # or less. If you are using the truck a lot on dirt roads the lower air pressure will give a better ride and more traction. The E tires will make more heat if they are run at lower pressures than the D tires and heat is the enemy for tire life. The opposite is true if the D tires are run at near max weight at 50#, they will build more heat in the tire. Everything is a compromise.
