What he said. It's pretty spot on population wise for what your looking for. It's 5-10 degrees cooler than tucson at about 4500', we are one hour southeast of Tucson. In my opinion one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Southern AZ. And if you want you can drive to the top of Carr canyon and its like your in the Poconos (20 minute drive). It's also a military town so theres a handful of GC's you could work for that work on post. Look up Marsh Development I subbed for them for awhile and they've been pretty fair. Lots of Whitetail and Mulies and a five hour drive to good elk country. Fishing options are Parker lake about 30-40 min. drive (trout, bluegill, bass and some channel cats), and Patogonia lake (my favorite because they have flatheads and the same others as parker) but it's an hour drive which sucks.

All that being said we have 5 kids and don't want one marrying a GI and moving across the world and we never see our kids again (or future grandkids). So we have a five year plan to move to Camp Verde someday to get away from the military base (I'm not anti military, just anti never seeing my kids). Much smaller population and I don't think the economy is as good there but I'll figure something out. The upside is its also surrounded by mountains and much closer to prime elk country. The verde river runs right through there which has flatheads so no long drive. Also pretty close to high country trout lakes and a couple huge lakes down towards phoenix. Camp Verdes about an hour north of Phoenix.

For what your after SV sounds good with Camp Verde and surrounding areas a close second.

Edge, that game they have on is not Football. Tampa and Cleveland. Not watching..lol...............BOB!

    You guys are hilarious, thanks.

I'd like to watch what catfish is watching but no premium, just Bucks N Brown, sad.

Get a fire stick with kodi, you can watch it all. Free. It's like road hunting the NFL.

    +1 on halibut cheeks!

We ended up with about 2 pounds of halibut cheeks! Looking forward to them! We fried some halibut for lunch today and it was unbelievable!

I bet you don't have to be on bath salts to enjoy those cheeks!

Was your trip a package deal? What's a trip cost like that?

I was with my buddy driving to a spot over the weekend and saw a buck on a ridge. we pulled over and where looking at him through the binos and a game warden pulls up and starts yelling at us for road hunting and threatened. to give us a ticket for road hunting. He said your are using your vehicle as an advantage and that is illegal. I said so does that mean I have to walk from my house to my hunting spot. he wasn't amused

I would have told that warden to eat shite and take a hike. There is no need to harass people. Alot of us go to the woods to get away from crap like that. There is no place for crooked officious officers in the woods.

I think they put it in writing as more of a discouragement. A warden is probably more likely to bark then write a citation. Seems to me that unless they saw you drive up looking out the window see a deer and get out and shoot it it would be a really hard thing to prosecute.

If you are a hunter you are always looking for game. You may be glassing, walking or driving. Dont shoot from the road, across the road or from the vehicle and I think your safe.

im always looking for game and i dont shoot from the roads if someones watching.

I'm looking out the window at all times when on canyon roads whether it's hunting season or not. Im surprised I haven't ended up in a ditch or ravine at this point.

Now I can't help but wonder how many steps off of a road you have to take in order to "not shoot from the road". Hmmmm.

  6. Years ago when I read most of the regs the first time I read that road hunting was illegal. Since then I've seen several threads mention road hunters and I've seen where people have asked for tips or suggestions in certain areas and people have responded with road hunting as a suggestion of how to find game. So I thought "huh, road hunting must be legal now...". Nope, just checked the regs. Still illegal. Not sure if people realize this and want to forwarn any of the new hunters or anyone who was just misinformed.

  7. Which dates did you draw. I got a friend that got drawn same unit but I think he's after mulies, but I think he can do whitetail too. He was a little worried about hunting alone since his friend he got drawn with can't go now. I can say something to him maybe you guys can help each other out. I wouldn't worry to much about the illegal traffic there. Access can be somewhat limited but the guy I mentioned knows a guy that has a ranch right in the mules that might let you guys access it. As butchers go there's the meat packing plant in Wilcox, and guzmans in sun sites.

  8. What unit are you in? That could be real helpful in the advice you would receive here. I don't know jack about the northern units but could offer insight on the southern units. I started bowhunting with no help at all. I did EVERYTHING wrong in the beginning and it took time to figure out what I should be doing. It took me ten years before I got a buck worthy of the wall, but got quite a few smaller ones before that. Key info would be understanding thermal currents and the prevailing wind where you are hunting. I used to try and do all the scent free stuff but when I started just playing the wind instead my opportunity doubled. You would be surprised at just how helpful a stranger would be if you let them know you need help. Theres only one thing that guys with knowledge love more than actually having that knowledge, and that is sharing it with someone willing to listen and learn.

  9. Super awesome advice on this thread. My daughter will have her first shot at her first game animal this year (youth elk). When the kids get drawn for there first deer I will encourage them to take the first legal animal just to set the bar. That being said If I have the opportunity to scout a unit and find a good buck before hand I will try and go back with the hopes of getting a "good" one off the bat but don't want to teach them to be greedy either.

  10. Getting a bid for HD Or lowes is a joke. HD will will charge $1000 per window installed for a $200 window then pay the sub piecework of $80 per window to install it. We've seen a roof job we did for about $9k priced from lowes for about $17k. I feel bad for people that screwed over like that, there's just no excuse to straight up rip people off.

HaHaHa... Makes me warm and fuzzy when scrotes with chromosone damage get some of what they deserve... Good Job ...

Yep it kinda makes me warm and fuzzy too. The judge should make it mandatory for them to at least have them confront a class of future hunters and make it be known that they are poachers and not hunters.

to me this are not poachers, poachers might take the meat, this guys left them there, they are common criminals.

Seriously? These guys shot a bunch of deer and left them for dead? Thats ten times worse! I wonder if they will actually have to pay off the fines, seems like the type of things douche types just seem to get off the hook with. They'll just move to New Mexico and do the same crap.
