Nosler Prepped Cases
Mr. Natural replied to Mr. Natural's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Well, the neck turning I am think of is just to even out the thickness of the neck brass, to only remove any thicker areas (NOT to reduce the overall thickness) in order to make the neck more uniform and concentric, and therefore center the bullet more in relation to the bore. In other words, only remove metal from the high spots, and not from the entire circumference of the neck. The match grade chamber and bushing thing would be way beyond what I am trying to achieve. -
Nosler Prepped Cases

True, and I have reached a point where turning necks would be the next step in the progression. But eventually, you reach the point of diminishing returns, where the gain compared to the effort is just not worth it. I am debating if turning necks will cross that line. I suppose I will end up forking over the bucks for a gauge and turning tool to find out. -
Nosler Prepped Cases

Thanks for the replies! However, I am specifically referring to case neck concentricity, or maybe thickness is a better word, on new Nosler "fully prepped" brass. I am wondering if anyone has ever actually measured the variability of the thickness of the metal around the circumference of the case necks, to see if they need to be turned. I have never actually bothered with turning case necks, but have been considering it lately to see if I can tighten up groups in my hunting loads. Maybe the bigger question is, do any of you bother turning case necks? And have you found that it makes any difference for hunting loads? -
That's too bad, but a cool buck. Glad you were able to find him.

It could be flame bait...some wise-arse may have created a new member profile just to be funny.

Never been on a hunting forum either, I'd guess. It helps when you post in the correct section. This "Forum Help" section is for when "you are having a problem or have a question about this board". The "Bowhunting for Coues Deer" section might get your post the desired attention. However, when your very first post is asking people to give up hard-earned knowledge, it is not likely to go over well. Heck, you don't even specify what kind of information you are looking for. About all I can say is, good luck with your hunt.

When I shoot something, or catch a fish, or whatever, I find it interesting to know what they have been eating. I was surprised to discover that the yellow flesh and tiny black seeds of barrel cactus fruit was almost the sole component of the diet of the mule deer buck I shot in 37B last month. What had the deer been eating that you harvested this fall, if you checked? And what kind of terrain was it, and what part of the state?

And you have the right hat on too...congrats.

Really? Eccentric maybe, but scary? Naaaah...

Thanks. I've been thinking about going back to a stick bow. A self-made bow would be cool, but until I retire, I just don't see that happening. Supporting a local artist seems like a reasonable alternative. I guess I should also ask...are her bows intended for hunting, or primarily decorative?
-
She makes bows? Have you seen her work? Any photos available? Of her bows, not her...get your minds out of the gutter.

That's a cool buck! Congrats!

Rotated: Beautiful buck and great story, congrats to all!

Well the big desert buck is all boiled out and white!

Don't suppose he took any photos of it on the ground? I think he would be crazy not to do a shoulder mount... -

I brought the ban hammer down on that same guy on another site, luckily after only two posts. Busy guy...the mods here have some work to do!

For skinning, Havalon Piranta. For working around bone, removing lower legs, heads, and what not, I have broken a blade or two doing that with the Havalon. Something a bit stouter is nice for that stuff. I love my Benchmade 510 DP (fixed) and my Mini Griptilian (folder). I have a beautiful Helle Besseggen that I have not christened with blood yet.

Yeah, I would say these sheds are definitely off of an older buck. It would be interesting to know if he is still around. I sure didn't see him while I was hunting...
-
Anyway, back to the OP, that country looks exactly like where I was hunting mule deer Friday through Tuesday. I found a matched set of sheds too. And I found a snake! This was the second diamondback over 5 ft I have run across out in that stuff. Boy, snakes that big sure get your adrenaline pumping!

This is mostly incorrect. There are some protected species, but you should read the reptile and amphibian regulations. Only 3 species of rattlesnake are protected - rock rattlesnake, twin-spotted rattlesnake, and ridge-nosed rattlesnake. The rest are perfectly legal, with a limit of 4 per year per species. I don't ordinarily kill rattlers, but I do make an occasional exception. Taking your legal limit of rattlesnakes a year is no more irresponsible, or "redneck", than killing your legal limit of deer.

Exactly why I am taking gaiters for my hunt that starts Friday. Congrats!

If you recognize this water hole, shoot me a PM...if you don't mind. It's nothing bad, I promise! Thanks!
