Thanks guys. I'll practice short and long distances then. I'm a pretty decent shot from the prone position all the way out to 600 yards, and decent off shooting sticks out to 300.

I'm hoping to get a little feed back on this unit guys if you don't mind sharing a little info with me. I'm new to coues hunting, and new to 35B. I live in Northern AZ, and have only been as far south as Tucson. And that was to buy a boat. Lol. I'm not looking for anyone's spots or anything like that, I just some information that might prepare me a little more for the unit please. For one, I'm in great shape and hiking certainly does not bother me. My first question would be, where should I look? Should I look at the flatter lower elevation areas, or part way up the mountains and mid range elevation areas, or all the way to the highest elevations at this time of year? North side slopes, or south side slopes? I've got an cow elk hunt in October that I'm helping my 2 uncles with, another bull elk hunt in November I'm trying to help my dad with, as well as a tag that I drew in November for late rifle bull. So unfortunately I will not get a lot of scouting time in this unit (I'll be scouting a lot for elk, and 35B is a long ways from me). I do however plan to be down for a couple of weekends before the hunt, and a few days before the hunt, and have the whole hunt off of work. So I will have some time in the unit, but it will be limited time, or at least not as much time as I'd like to spend preparing for a hunt. So I'd appreciate any information I can get on what type of stuff I should focus looking at while I'm there. Another question I have, is kind of general to all of the coues hunts. Why is the November hunt the least desirable of the hunts? On to another question. What kind of illegal traffic am I going to be looking at in 35B? As for now I've got plans to stay with a friend on the north end of the unit if that helps narrow down where I'll be staying. Is this unit safe for backpack hunting? I love to backpack hunt, and was kind of thinking of packing in for 3 days at a time. But I don't want to do this if I'm going to have to sleep with one eye open the whole hunt, and fear for my life. Any other information you'd like to share with me would be much appreciated. Feel free to post it here or PM me. Whatever you're comfortable with. Thanks guys, I appreciate your time. I'm sure I'll think of something else to ask.

Well I got 175 rounds loaded up this weekend. Starting to get serious about the hunt. Going to start shooting 5 shots every day after work. What would you guys say the average shot distance is for coues in this unit? Also is the vegetation pretty tall in this unit as well? I'm wanting to know if I need to practice prone positions with a bipod, or kneeling positions with shooting sticks. Thanks again for all the help so far.

I plan on staying vigilant, and will be carrying concealed. I guess I can count out the back pack hunting. I'll just have to walk in and out each day. I'm hoping there is some snow, I love the cold weather.

Kaibab and meat processing/taxidermy suggestions

Lol. Don't eat their jerky that they make either. My dad bought a bag once passing through, and ended up having my brothers deer and his deer 2 years ago turned ALL into jerky there. It's so good, but it doesn't last very long. -
Thanks guys I really appreciate the info. Oh, and what kind of temps can I expect to see this time of year? Any possibility for snow? Thanks.

Yep the cost of an alarm system per month is worth it 100%. Plus it helps your home insurance go down a little bit. Make sure to get one with cameras. Without cameras a home security system is worthless. I'm not sure if Vivint is in the Scottsdale area or not, but I highly recommend them. I've been very pleased with our system. http://www.vivint.com/

Yep, you should be running E rated tires.

dang I hate hearing stuff like this. This happened to my dad a couple of years back. Since then I've had a security system installed with cameras throughout the house, and I added huge safe bolted to the concrete foundation. I really hope you find your gear, and I hope you find out who did this. Good luck. I've got a Bushnell "The Truth" rangefinder that you're more than welcome to use on your hunt if you'd like. It's not the the greatest range finder for long distance, but it works very well for archery. Let me know it you'd like to use it. You can use it for as long as you'd like. I didn't draw an archery tag this year, so I won't be using it. Jake

Maybe try keeping your ammo in an ice chest, and pulling a single round out at a time and immediately firing through the chronograph? I've heard of guys doing this while working up loads in the summer, to simulate fall hunting conditions.

For the money you can't beat the MagnetoSpeed or MagnetoSpeed V3. They're easy to use, and very accurate when comparing bullet drops to measured fps readings. What ever you do, don't buy a shooting chrony f1. I've had 2 of them, and I don't trust them at all. I've seen 100-300 fps swings with them. They're junk imho. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/628777/magnetospeed-v3-ballistic-chronograph https://www.midwayusa.com/product/896627/magnetospeed-sporter-chronograph

Look up Lacorti's Custom Butchering. They don't have a website that I know of, but you can find their phone number online to contact him. He's done deer, elk, pigs, and beef for me. He's great at it, and an honest guy to deal with. Plus he's located in Fredonia which is a just a short drive from Jacobs Lake. If you want to drive into Page, Az, you can take your deer to Stix. They do pretty good work there as well. One thing to remember for both butchers, is to clean your animal before you bring it to them. They do NOT want hair in their coolers. So make sure to skin you deer and wash it well before taking it to them, or they'll turn you away. Edit: These two I listed are butchers only. I'm not sure who would be a good taxidermist in the area. -
Looking good. The good old 243 Win is one of my absolute favorite calibers. I've killed a lot of mulies, and eastern whitetails, and I've killed them all with my 243. I'm currently shooting the 95 gr Berger Classics with 42gr of H4350 out of my Howa, and I'm getting 3090 fps. I'll be taking my 243 on my 35B hunt this year. I'm hoping to tag my first coues buck. Great job on your rifle and good luck with your hunt this year.

I got a response back from timney, and they said trigger number 609 is the trigger for me. I'm placing my order today. Thanks for the help everyone. -

I've been looking at the Timney trigger, but I've read a couple of reviews saying it won't work on my rifle. But I've also read some that say that it will work with minor modifications. I'll give them a call to see what they say. Thanks. -
Something wrong with that add..... Box says "MOA", turrets are MRAD... Good catch. Yeah maybe stay away from that one.

You might be able to wheel and deal on this too. It's already at a pretty good price though. Plus it's close to you. You could go take a peak at it to see if you like it. https://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/for/5721144740.html

Quick update. Got my AR-15 99% complete. I'm still waiting on my trigger. I also got the new scope and rings in for my coues gun. Here's a pic of both now that they're done. Howa 1500 243 Win 223 Wylde

Me neither and I've been looking! I suppose they're just in a small area up there. I've hunted them lightly for a few years. They don't hang out in one area for long. The problem hunting them, is they move all over the dang mountain. I've seen them or signs of them out by the 12B boarder, and I've seen them or sign everywhere in between all the way to the North Rim Boundary. They are hard to pattern up there. Once anyone puts any kind of pressure on them they move. I know exactly where this photo was taken, and I have a general idea of where they might head next. I might have to head up this weekend.

Problems 7mm Rem Mag 162 ELD X
PowellSixO replied to Paladin529's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I'm no expert here, but isn't 5 the load you would want to work with? I always look for the least amount of vertical stringing while playing with powder weights, which tells me I'm in an accuracy node of the barrel. Then I play with seating depth to get my horizontal stringing under control. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I was taught and it works pretty well for me. -
I Support Wildlife--a good thing for our non-hunting buddies to get involved with!
PowellSixO replied to Capt. Don Martin's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I bought a years membership to the "I Support Wildlife". There are some pretty neat features in their maps honestly. -
Nice. I actually know him. I've seen the elk up there a few times, but never when I had a tag in my pocket. When I get my tag, it's like an elk repellent. Hehe.
